Both can work. The most agreeable material I'd ever read said that there's actually three sources of picking motion: forearm, wrist, and fingers. Which to use depends on the style and speed you employ, fingers tend to work best for slow melodies, then as the tempo goes up the wrist and finally the forearm start coming more and more into play.

>>
>been playing ~9 months
>Gibson SG or Ibanez S770

No current projects, mostly just jam to backing tracks on youtube, and jam with friends every now and then.

I just bought a Fender Bassbreaker 15 the other day, and I love the sound.

I'm looking for good pedals to put through it, thinking a high gain distortion for Van Halen stuff, since the onboard distortion doesn't quite cut it, and probably a Phaser.

Also do I put phaser pedal through effects loop? I'm not sure what the use of the effects loop is.

>>
>>68413456
Everything is going to hurt when you start playing chords
>>
>>68413456
For bar chords, try holding your thumb closer towards the body of the guitar, so that your thumb and forefinger aren't lined up. It'll make a clamp effect and takes a lot less effort to press all the strings.
>>
>>68413456
Don't listen to the guys saying it's supposed to hurt, playing guitar should NEVER be painful (only exception is the tips of your fingertips when building calluses). Make sure you are only pressing down on the strings with enough force so that the notes ring out clear, chances are you're pressing down with too much force. Also make sure you're holding the guitar at a comfortable angle (like the other guys said) and that you take plenty of breaks.

I don't suppose the size of the guitar has anything to do with it. I only decided to start playing because I had a tiple guitar laying around for years and just decided to start playing (mind you it's pretty tiny). I was thinking of buying a regular sized one after actually learning, but if the guitar being so small really inhibits my learning I might have to buy one after all.
>>
How essential is it to be able to barre my 2nd and 3rd finger as well as my 1st?

Also is it a waste of time for me to be learning all the chords right now? The E's A"s etc. I don't really know what they'll be for but i'm remembering them all. I feel like i'm learning lots of things i can't quite use.

Why do people shit all over my tone?

elixir .012
I don't use a pick often, but when I do, its 1.5mm
I'm classically trained for 8 years of music school and know the importance of timbre.
At some point, I said "fuck classical guitar technique, I know enough." And cut off my right hand nails, then developed a GODLIKE flesh tone (am also able to wash my scalp better, plus all the free time not having to give myself half a manicure each time before I play, is nice)

Why the fuck do people tell me my tone is "sterile" with my EMG's. And to switch to single coils. Like what the fuck do they know about anything? Am I of all people, not hearing something that normie pleb non-guitarists are hearing? Jazz basses are great because of their versatility. My american jazz bass sounds pretty deep since it has got a set of thomastik infield flats on it. >>
>>68417863
EMG 81s compress though, if you want a clean tone with exact dynamics, you're better off with another pickup.
Don't just judge yourself, half of the time a guitarist tries to, he's wrong at several points.

>>68417968
>whip you with a sweaty t shirt
That does nothing else than smell bad, if you want to hurt someone, you twist a towel in a certain way to get a whip. And all that does to you is fuck up your dynamics and hurt like hell.

I'd definitely not use flats for metal, except maybe in studio to get some cool lead sound at one point, but that's super specific.

Does anyone else use a fuzz pedal to fatten up the sound of their guitar, use low gain with more volume so that the amp's tubes get overdriven?
I just got a Swollen Pickle fuzz and when I tried it on another amp, high gain and low volume on the pedal sounded good, but on my little blackstar ht1r it doesn't sound really good unless I crank up the volume, lower the gain on the pedal then use the boost channel with the gain on 1 o'clock on the amp.
The result is a really fat sound that also drives the amp's little 8inch speaker.

if it sounds good, it sounds good. dont question it anon

i sometimes use a fuzz face with both settings at like 9oclock to just give my tele a little bit of thickness, and combine it with a punchy slapback reverb and i'm rollin baby
>>
>>68418261
The HT1 might have a less complex preamp section, with less gain stages, if you're driving the power tubes, you're adding an extra gain stage.

>>68418371
>if it sounds good, it sounds good. dont question it anon
Definitely. I've taken a liking to using a middle single coil for stoner tones instead of my neck or bridge humbucker.
Or on my EHX metal muff, I set the distortion way higher than needed, the volume super low, and then turn up the gain on the amp so that I'd get a mild OD without the pedal. Once i turn it on, it gives me a super nasty grindcore tone that I really like. It's absolutely unbearable to play though, it feedbacks like a motherfucker.

I've been dicking around on guitar for like 6 years and not really getting anywhere. I can play basic chords and pick out any melody after noodling with scales, but I haven't really been able to develop the framework to where I would actually be able to say with confidence that I can actually play it.

How do I go about doing this?

>Metal, prog, ambient, psychedelic.
>>
>>68418708
Improve the stuff you're shit at rather than playing stuff you're already good at. Real improvement comes from focused, deliberate practice, not from noodling around.

Develop a routine, learn scales, arpeggios, modes and technique - get properly familiar with your instrument - there are books that can help that are freely available. Try the Govan books in the OP.

Learn some theory, no need to go overboard, but how to construct chords and how and why things fit together harmonically and melodically can really help.

Don't be afraid to get a couple of lessons - even a few ad hoc lessons with a good teacher can work wonders.

Play with other people. You'll get stuck in a rut if you're only playing with yourself in your bedroom.

Both are pretty much the same, however the epi will be less tight in lower tunings due to the shorter scale. It's not really a disadvantage as much as a difference, plenty of stoner/doom bands use the shorter scale to get a fatter tone.

you'll usually know once you learn the staff and fretboard what position you have to play in. most stuff is position one, and you move up the fretboard to play stuff above the staff. by the time youre reading music where youre changing positions mid song, you'll just know what to do, lol.

chords will be written as chords, singles as singles.

>shapes
>don't think anyone really does this
^^your problems

how the fuck do you think a saxophonist improvises? there are no 'shapes' on horn instruments. they literally think about the notes on the staff and use the notes available in the key/mode to make a melody.

guitarists and pianists have it easier because all our notes are laid right out for us, so we can focus more on the intervals, as well as using dyads and triads to structure and thicken our melodies. just it's the notes and rhythm that matter most. too many guitarists focus on 'running shapes and finger exercises' that when it comes to improvising all they can do is play up and down the scale, because they don't actually know anything about notes, intervals, tonics, etc, they're focussing more on a fretboard pattern that they've been told 'works' rather than the actual music
>>
>>68421920

the whole point of the tiny terror is to be an easily portable head, so that you can just take it to gigs and plug in to 4x12 cabinets without having to lug a big ass head or combo amp around

no, those aren't my problems. obviously i understand that shapes aren't the only way to think of things, but i don't think horn players think about the staff. they think about the notes available (which btw, i'm also doing when i think about shapes).

horn players have it a bit simpler in a way. there's only 1 or 2 ways to play a certain note, and things are more linear. on guitar there are so many ways to play one thing, and the way the strings are laid out makes the intervals a bit weird, as evident by the fact that i can name every single note on the piano keyboard and have to think a bit to do it on the guitar.

while the guitar is good for moveable chord shapes, it's a bit more challenging when it comes to soloing and intervals (which is why the 3NPS and CAGED system are needed to learn the fretboard)

it's not as simple as "all our notes are laid right out for us"

>it's not as simple as "all our notes are laid right out for us"

it literally is though. the staff goes from open low e, through the 6 strings in the 1st position, and then up the high E string to the 21st fret.

the rest of the fretboard is just repetition. also, 3nps and caged are cheap shortcuts. learn the 1st position, then the 2nd position, then the 3rd, and 4th. people want to jump all the way up the fretboard when they dont even know the staff in the 1st position because muh shredding. it's like these idiots you see with their cheap hsh guitars trying to learn advanced picking techniques when they don't even understand the guitar beyond tabs. take a lesson from eric 'slowhand' clapton and don't neglect the low frets, because 75% of the notes on the guitar are in the open strings and the first 4 frets (ie 1st position).

the only reason people thing guitar is sooooooo challenging is because there are so many crutches used, and 8/10 people choose the easy way. then they get to where you are and realize they don't know shit and start whining about how hard it is--newsflash: if they had given proper attention to building a foundational knowledge of music theory rather than just practicing scales and memorizing shapes, they'd be a lot better.

too many guitarists are too quick to play beyond their theoretical understanding, just because the notes are there. whereas a horn or woodwind player has to understand the note theoretically before they even learn how to play it. if a horn player tried just randomly fiddling the valves and blowing rhythms, they'd be laughed off the fucking bench. yet guitarists get away with it because they can blindly follow 'shapes' and scales without any direction or understanding of what it is their doing.

maybe you're one of these people, and maybe youre not. i have no idea. but i do know that there are a disproportionate number of guitar players that are bad because of poor training, rather than lack of ability.

It's true for regular strats and older style guitars, but super-strats and meme-machines just look weird with natural headstocks

Sorry scratch that, I copied and pasted from the wrong page.

Call your Sweetwater representative and tell him you want serial #170007508 before they ship.

I'll explain why you want serial #170007508 if you'd like, but you probably need to get on it before they ship out the dud you ordered. Or at lest reserve serial #170007508 so you can get that one before somebody else takes it, you don't want any of the other one's being offered either.
>>
>>68426174
You're really providing me with a lot of reasons why.
>>
>>68426334
The main reason above all the others would be intonation, you can go look at the high and low E on the one you bought (and on the four they have left) and you can see that the saddles are all over the place. High and low E Saddles backed all the way up or all the way back indicate a bridge that was placed improperly. The one I'm telling you to get will leave you with space to breath if you decide to change string gauges.

That's reason enough to get the one I'm recommending but I'll go on if you'd like.
>>
>>68426441
Its too late already. Shipped yesterday. I play everything in standard tuning these days.

>Squier
O i am laffin
>>
>>68425603
If your "guitar" says squire on the headstock just stop.
>>
>>68426584
You're getting a strummer where the lowest note being played drowns out all the others. The exact opposite is true with a good Les Paul in a gainy amp though, the difference is where it makes your hands want to go when you play. Acoustic like rhythm playing is such a shame on an electric guitar and it's the guitar itself that makes the difference concerning the development of a voice that stands out.
>>
>>68426779
Are you trying to say that I bought a shit guitar? Because I'm pretty sure it's still a step up from my shitty BC Rich and epiphone that I sold.
>>
>>68426947
With Les Pauls it's always crap shoot, especially if you're buying online. I can't guarantee the one I told you to get will be a good one (especially since it's been chambered) but it's got a better chance of being good than the one you've got coming in the mail. Good Les Pauls generally tend to be a little over the 9 lb. mark (closer to 9.5 lb. actually) and that one is the closest to that ideal weight. This is one reason why guys tend to have a love/hate relationship with a good Les Paul, because good ones are generally so heavy. And the headstocks snap off if you drop them.

Are you the Darkness guy who showed up a few threads ago?
>>
>>68425751
I had an SE Soapbar II, was my first guitar. It's actually a good one, probably the best quality of the SE series guitars I've played. I wish I hadn't sold it.

No noise cancellation on those P90's though, that was my only complaint... but that's the nature of P90's.
>>
>>68427121
I am not that guy.

The guitar will be fine, if it's not I can exchange it. This is sweetwater were talking about here. The main I look for on any guitar these days is intonation. If it can't be fine tuned then it migh as well be a squier.
>>
>>68427273
>You're getting a strummer where the lowest note being played drowns out all the others.
If this is the case when you plug it in ask your Sweetwater rep if you can exchange it for the one I pointed out, that's the mark of a shitty Les Paul. The intonation will certainly be a problem should you decide to change string gauges later though.
