Koenjihyakkei was what I was referring to mostly. But early Magma was very jazzy too, MDK being when they began the shift towards more and more operatic stuff. 1001ºC is a personal favorite of mine.
There were a few offshoot projects by Magma members in a more jazzy vein too, but I forgot the names and I'm lazy so you'll have to look them up yourself.
If you digged Koenjihyakkei you should also check out Quetzalcoatl, which is a quite recent murican band that sounds a lot like them.

I see it as more Russian influenced than Germanic. Da Zeuhl Wortz Mëkanïk can be written phonetically as "дa цyл вoтcь мeхaник," and in Russian would mean roughly "Yes, the operator of the celestial music is here."
From my understanding, anyway.
