Close, Fugazi is best.
>>
Minutemen are the best IMO
>>

Dead Kennedys
>>
bad brains is objectively the best punk band ever

The fucking Dwarves
>>

i kinda agree on this, but their history of homophobia doesn't help their case
>>

>>
>>68381821
That's Minor Threat
Fugazi were the best though
>>
>>68381918
I'd consider it at their peak, but Fugazi never made a below 8/10 album and Bad Brains made plenty

>>68381975
sheeit, google fucked me
>>
>>68381952
I wouldn't go as far as to say as bad brains are homophobic.

HR himself maybe, but he's also literally insane.

I saw an interview with Dr Know and Ian Mackaye where they talked about that incident but I dont remember where it is now.
>>
I guess they're more post hardcore but my preferences lie with Big Black
>>
>>68381987
>I'd consider it at their peak, but Fugazi never made a below 8/10 album and Bad Brains made plenty

I agree, but without bad brains, fugazi along with most punk bands from that era wouldn't have existed.

In terms of influence I don't think they can be topped.
>>
gg allin for sure
>>
>>68382008
Big Black is more noise rock

Minor Threat is definitely the best punk band, I don't know how people even call Fugazi punk. Dead Kennedys, Minutemen and Husker Du are all close competitors though.
>>
>>68382084
Minor Threat is fucking terrible.
>>
>>68382093
Why?

If your answer is all their songs sound the same and it's just annoying yelling then you just need to listen to them more because once you get past that they're the best punk band.
>>
>>68382084
minor threat is hardcore
>>
>>68382084
>Big Black is more noise rock
but there's an undeniable punk ethic
>>
>>68382110
hardcore is punk

If you're going to make the distinction between the two punk died in the late 70s and hardcore took over.
>>
>>68382113
Definitely but their instrumentation and playing style take them out of the genre

>>68382110
Do you not view hardcore punk as punk? Same structure as punk just no classic rock
>>
Misfits are one of the best
>>
>>68382110
It's called Hardcore PUNK for a reason
>>
>>68382135
hardcore has a very different sound from pop punk, proto punk, horror punk.. can't just crown one band to be the queen of them all.
>>
>>68382135
>Definitely but their instrumentation and playing style take them out of the genre
Nah the two are inseparable
>>
>>68382136
For two albums maybe.
>>
I dig Fugazi, but calling them the best punk band is just overdoing it.

I'd give that title to Husker Du
>>
>>68382154
I wouldn't say hardcore is a subgenre like horror or pop punk. Hardcore punk is still punk rock I'M, it isn't really different from original punk, just more more intense with a more fully formed ethos. Hardcore is responsible for today's perception of punk rock

>>
>>68382008
>>68382084
I consider post-hardcore and noise rock both to be punk subgenres for the most-part. Obviously post-hardcore became more commercialized in the 2000s, though. But ask Albini or Mackaye and they'd call themselves punk musicians.

I guess if punk just means bands that sound like the Sex Pistols then maybe not, but I think it's more about the aesthetic (for lack of a better word)
>>
>>68382159
You think? They incorporated a lot of funk on atomizer, songs about fucking doesn't even sound like a punk album. It all still comes from the same place but Big Black adds too much to their music. To call them punk would be to dismiss their innovativeness

>>

>>
>>68382226
Punk musicians don't have to make punk. Punk started so much, it was where all of alt rock took root. Lots and lots of people were influenced by punk to make lots of music. Kurt Cobain, for example, got his ethos, aesthetic and ideas from punk, but they were not a punk band. I would call Steve Albini a punk musician because he does things himself and refuses to compromise his values. That's punk but his music is not.
>>
>>68382197

But yeah, at least for American punk it has to come down to Fugazi, Big Black, and Bad Brains.
>>
it's depressing how little this board knows about punk
>>
>>68382239
>It all still comes from the same place but Big Black adds too much to their music
Do you think Bad Brains are punk? The Clash? I like Big Black, but the only thing they added more of (in comparison) is distortion

>>68382241
Another band that considers themselves to be punk, and cites Black Flag as their biggest influence. And sludge is arguably a hardcore punk-doom metal hybrid anyway

>>68382310
I see what you're saying, but it's still punk at its core. I don't see why it has to stop being punk once it gets interesting. It's DIY, it's anti-establishment, it's made to offend. I don't see how Albini's bands could fall under anything other than the punk umbrella, and the same goes for most noise rock

>>
>>68382370
/mu/ has an incredibly shallow taste in punk for the most part. Outside of the bigger bands like the ones mentioned in this thread there are only a handful of people who know anything.

I bet there are less than 10 people total who listen to modern punk bands that aren't shit like fidlar or iceage.
>>
>>68382443
Makes sense.

If you don't bring anything to the table, and just insult other people's opinions, you can't be criticized for your own taste.
>>
>>68382443
And what do you know? (I mean, besides the fact that no one else knows anything)
>>
>>68382370
nobody itt has "patrician" tastes, it's a bunch of high schoolers with embarassingly entry level taste arguing about genre dustinctions that don't exist because in reality there is enormous overlap in musical genres

What, musically, makes a band like Pure Disgust or Gas Rag less entry level than bands mentioned in this thread, or other obvious bands like Discharge?

>>
>>68382565
I wasn't trying to say they were shit. I should have re-worded that. It's just that when anyone says "modern punk" on /mu/ they get brought up like they're the biggest or best when they really aren't. They just have more exposure because of p4k. Knowing iceage isn't indicative of someone knowing much about punk.
>>

No. The Zero Boys are. Alternatively, Bum Kon.

it's so depressing watching /mu/ discuss punk

Pretty much confirmed my suspicions.

I'd give my vote to Crass
The Stooges, Big Black, Richard Hell and the Voidoids, Black Flag, Rudimentary Peni, Dead Kennedys, Sex Pistols, are all close behind.
Fugazi and Minor Threat are overrated as shit, and while they are pretty good they are definitely not the best in anyway, even for post-hardcore. Anyone who thinks so clearly doesn't know anything about punk.

Big Black is self described as punk, they sound punk, have a punk attitude, aesthetic and ethos. How are they not punk? Other than the fact that you checked wikipedia and it said a genre without the word punk in it. This is about as punk as it gets, more so than Minutemen and Husker Du.

Sorry for late response, job interview.
>musically

This has nothing to do with it. Entry level =/= easy to play

Entry level just means babies first whatever. None of the bands on that list are entry level because when you ask literally anyone in the world who knows anything about punk they won't rattle off those names but will say things like black flag, DK sex pistols, etc.

It has nothing to do with musical ability as
>>68382642

>>
>>68384604
Ok, so what's the problem? You don't get punk until you've listened to all of the no-name copy cat bands that, by your admission, aren't actually better or more interesting?
>>
Obviously the buzzcocks

what is it with you guys
>>
>>68384804
The only problem is that some of us would like to discuss bands outside of the ones we always talk about in punk threads.

I never tried to imply that entry level bands are bad, just that they are posted too much.

What more can anyone possibly say about black flag, minutemen or husker du? I just want better, more diverse discussion.
>>
>>68384863
I don't get that sense from you guys at all. If you want to talk about other bands, talk about them. Don't just talk about how other people aren't talking about other bands, that achieves nothing but starting dumb arguments like this that are even worse for discussion.

>What more can anyone possibly say about black flag, minutemen or husker du?
Well, what more is there to say about Gas Rag that isn't applicable to Discharge?
>>
>>68384909
>If you want to talk about other bands, talk about them

With who? Nobody listens to punk outside of the big hits here. Thats my point. It's like saying you're into jazz, listing coltrane and davis, then thinking you are a "patrician"

The post I originally responded to was exactly that, see>>68382370

I'm helping him. He can go through life thinking that the albums listed here are the only punk albums worth listening to, or he can delve deeper into the genre like he should.
>>
>>68385021
There are multiple posts in this thread from different people complaining about the lack of variety. If you all posted something different instead of complaining, that would be variety in itself and would encourage further variety

>I'm helping him
Again, no you're not. Saying that they lack variety doesn't increase their variety.
>>
>>68385160
>There are multiple posts in this thread from different people complaining about the lack of variety

I'm supposed to answer for everyone else now?

>Saying that they lack variety doesn't increase their variety

No shit. An intelligent person would use that information to explore more of the genre. I'm not here to spoonfeed people. Besides, everyone who complained also provided a list of modern hardcore bands.

>>
>>68385243
I don't see much discussion there

>An intelligent person would use that information to explore more of the genre.
Not without an explanation for why their taste is shallow. By your own admission, it's shallow only because it's entry level (or popular). Based on that, listening to more punk would mean just listening to it for the sake of it. Even when I pressed you about what is musically different you couldn't answer and said it didn't matter. What new things do those modern bands bring to the table that makes their music worth listening to?

>I'm not here to spoonfeed people
Good look reconciling that with your desire for diversity of content

>I want to talk about different bands but I can't because that would be spoonfeeding
>>
>>68385410
/mu/ has a shallow taste in punk because the same 15 albums get posted then the thread dies. I post in all the punk threads I see, I know what happens in them.

These albums all happen to be "popular" punk albums. Nowhere have I said that this is a bad thing.

You still seem to think that I am trying to insult people's taste. I'm simply telling them that there is so much more outside of what is already commonly known around here. Anyone who thinks they know their shit because they know minutemen, husker du, black flag, etc need a refresher.

And believe it or not it is possible to have musical discussion about newer bands without spoonfeeding, it happens in the rare good punk threads on here.

You seem oversensitive and very confused here, I'm not sure what else to say.

>>
>>68385761

But yeah, without being a contrarian, there are maybe 4 bands that are going to come up a lot, because they're simply good bands.
>>
>>68385798
you said

>never visit /mu/

>>
>>68385859
>thread about best bands in a genre
>compliment people for selecting bands that I think are good
>autists complain because TOO MAINSTREAM MANNN

Are you feeling special yet?
>>
>>68385632

Big Black is one of my favorite bands, but there are definitely some striking things that make them much different from early punk bands like the Sex Pistols, Buzzcocks, and Ramones, along with other 80s punk bands like Hüsker Dü, Minor Threat and Black Flag.

The first being the drum machine. It immediately gives them an electronic vibe whether or not that was the intention. Next are Steve's vocals, they range from spoken word to hoarse shouts, much different than the lower register shouts and screams that are found in other punk bands that I mentioned. The bass lines from all of their records are drudging, rumbling, and often times much more than just root notes following the guitar chords. Which brings us to Santi and Steve's guitar playing. Santi usually used a big beefy distorted tone that was more akin to metal sounding guitars. And Steve is known for creating one of the most, if not the most, fucked up guitar tone of all times. Self described as 'knife-guitar' occasionally because of how shredding it sounded. High pitched screeching guitars had been used in post punk bands like Minutemen but nothing like how Steve did.

Kids Like Us
SWAMPS
Fury Strikes (not to be confused with fury)
Empire of Rats was amazing when they existed for the brief time they did in 2013
Incendiary is probably revolutionizing strong island NYHC
But if I could only recommend one album it would definitely be RxOx
Strong Themes and Genuinity make for a band to be remembered for a long time
