Point proven
>>
>>68381607
But lyrics DO make a song sad. Also, the music itself is sad. The lone guitar and the heartfelt crooning all invoke a sense of sadness.
>>
If you want an actual answer, sad black songs are usually more energetic. Usually in blues and soul, for example, it's more of an expression of pain than wallowing in depression, which I guess is what would qualify as "sad" to you.

For example >>68381576 i's a way different way of expressing sadness than whatever monotonous depressioncore you're trying to compare it to

To me, very few people can pull that off. People like Bob Dylan, Tom Waits and Ed Harcourt.

All of /mu/'s sad guitar strumming kusic sounds shallow and empty to me. NMH comes close, but it ends up sounding more cheesy than soulful.
>>
>>68381347
actually sadness is a sign of being an embarrassing pseud
>>
>>68381721
Okay? Then you're just picky about your sad music. It doesn't make the songs any less sad though for other people or just in general.

Not him, but the more I understand the lyrics, the less I like the song. Either have them be on that Semen Stained Mountaintops poetic jargon level so it feels more meaningful than it actually is, or make your vocals just another instrument in an otherwise instrumental piece.

Actually, I'm 23

I just find everyday human experiences incredibly mundane, so songs about them are equally uninteresting.

Give me the birth of a star, the death of the universe, something more meaningful than tfw no gf could ever hope to be.

But most people don't compose songs about things beyond their daily lives, so at best I usually hope for the inability to understand their lyrics.

I Don't Like Shit I Don't Go Outside is definitely sad and not in a ghetto meme way. Have you even heard the album?
>>
I think what you're getting at is that music in the American folk tradition--which includes what we call "black music," doesn't have the same emotional cues that western popular music has.

The formula for a "sad song" in Western popular music is dissonance -> resolution. A common trope is to insert a minor third into a melody then to later resolve back into a major key.

You hear this in a lot of sad songs: "The Drugs Don't Work," "I Dreamed a Dream," etc. --the famous tearjerkers.

What you see in the American folk tradition is kind of a hodge-podge of various Western European, Eastern European, and African influences. As you probably know, Eastern European and African music uses different scales from Western European music, and "minor" doesn't necessarily equal "sad."

So American folk, and the black music tradition that grew out of it tends to cue listeners into the sadness of a song not with the standard trope of melody->minor third->resolution but rather through delivery, lyricism, or even rhythm.

You can see this still at work in rap, for example. Plenty of rap songs feature minor-key beats, but the song itself will be about having fun or partying.

But to further answer your question, I would like to emphasize that you asked your question poorly. A lot of black musicians are working in so-called "black music" that follows very America folks references, but other black musicians are working with very popular Western sensibilities; you just don't listen to these artists.

Here is one of the most famous black tearjerkers, and it absolutely uses the "minor fall->major lift" formula that I've been talking about.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmDxJrggie8
>>
>>68384458
And there are a lot of "black" songs that follow this same formula, especially in R&B, *especially* in 90's R&B. This isn't a very popular genre with people who already look down on black artists, though, for obvious reasons. But all of these songs have that good ol' minor fall and major lift that sad songs have to be to be sad if you're a white, red-blooded, English-speaking dude:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UXxRyNvTPr8

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7EyUY3-Wrg

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ee9SCW91urE

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JF8BRvqGCNs
>>
>>68384869
The reason you don't see more of this is that younger American black audiences, especially young black American males, find this kind of melodic signalling to be kind of cheesy and melodramatic.

Black culture in the US values stoicism more than white culture does.

But it's beginning to make a comeback with black musicians.
