This basically.

Although uniquely Arabic music does exist, it's nowhere near what it could have been if Islam wasn't the dominating ideology.

The very small amount of good music that came out of the region was produced at the times when people were getting less religious. So basically mostly near the end of the Ottoman empire and during the 50s-80s. Atm it's just a shithole.

Check this out though:

Halim Al-Dabh was and Egyptian who was one of the people who pioneered electronic music. He was Christian though lol.

So I wouldn't really call the region devoid of talent, but it's definitely sub par, especially at present times.

traditional (religious) music is quite beautiful (in particular in Iran), but it's true that the current violent versions of Islamism stop any possibility of evolution or interesting foreign influences. This area is in a cultural dead en street.

the few black and death metal bands that manage to pop up from Islamic countries are interesting in themselves for playing music that in all respects will get them branded as heretics

makes it feel meaningfully subversive rather than all the sadozombiegoat tropes pumped out from the rest of the underground

HOLY SHIT I'm so looking forward to the day when we get a struggle hip hop album by refugees tolling through migrant camps and badass lyrical miracle stories of actual warfare, kin being lost, epic adventures through smuggling boats....oh man it's going to be awesome

This sums it up pretty nicely. Though if you look away from ex-Ottoman territories, places like Pakistan, NW Africa and some less radical SEA countries like Indonesia and Malaysia have pretty interesting secular music scenes thriving there.
Also Pakistan has lots of Qawwali, which is a kinda cool genre of religious music.

Muslim scholars believe that if the music is even mildly capable of pushing listeners off righteous living, it is dangerous. Since the vast majority of popular music at the very least references things that Muslim scholars would consider immoral, that makes most popular music immoral.

All music that praises Allah and the values of Islam is unequivocally permitted. However, even listening to music outside of this context is dangerous - if you make listening to music a habit, it can interfere with righteous living. In the time you are listening to music recreationally, you could be focusing on the task at hand, for the benefit of yourself, your family, your people, and Allah.

The thing is, Christianity had several phases like this as well, and there are a minority of modern Christians who generally think the same way as the Muslim scholars - most music, especially modern music, and very especially popular music, at best encourages dangerous behavior in our children and at worst is an active effort to corrupt the faithful in their dedication to god.

There's this Arabian black metal band.

It's pretty hardcore to be black metal in Saudi Arabia since that shit can get you beheaded.

I kind of wish there was a Middle Eastern doom band that wore full burkas and did forty minute songs about genies and shit. They'd be like the Muslim Sunn O))).
>>

>They'd be like the Muslim Sunn O))).
except they wouldn't be Muslim anymore. Islam is fucked up enough to consider music a sin, so I'm pretty sure doom music with any religious influences is considered straight up blasphemy.

You can still be Muslim and not mainstream Muslim.

Remember its only the current prevailing interpretation, and remember that despite Islam considering even art representational of humans and animals to be haram, there is still a rich history of Islamic representational art.

Hell, some Muslim could go the calligraphy route - if it is forbidden to draw something, simply write a stylized phrase in Arabic in the shape of the thing.
