IDM

Is it high time we figured out a way of talking about this collection of styles without having to call it IDM? Braindance is just as bad if not worse. Is it easier to just call everything either Ambient Techno, Experimental Techno or Glitch Dance?

this is the best term in my opinion. It doesn't connote special intelligence, but it expresses the way that a lot of this music is meant for heady attentive listening. I really would like to see it become the popular term

I honestly like very much the tag IDM, only the tag, what it means it's utterly stupid indeed. When I make listen some friends to Autechre and Aphex Twin and I say "this music is called IDM" they say "wow cool, but if you reveal them "it means intelligent dance music" everyone react like "what? :O("

So tag is ok, meaning is dumb.

The fact that it has Brain in the name does give it that connotation though. It's pretty much just "brainy dance music". I don't know if Americans use the word brainy but in the UK it means smart in a really geeky way, it instantly makes the genre sound pretentious.
