Welcome to /gotw/!
/gotw/, which stands for genre of the week, is an ongoing thread in which we vote for a genre and then spend the week listening to it. Every Saturday a new genre is chosen. Once a genre is used, it can’t be used again until the next year. We will listen to, rate, and discuss albums & other works in the genre. Then, once the week is over, we do it all over again. The goal is to expose others to music they may not have heard before, and to get more into genres.
This week’s genre is ambient.

anyone /janjelinek/ here?

>mildly interesting thread concept
>gotw is something already popular
And the point is...?
>>68357483
good, but not ambient
>>68357508
Discovering more obscure albums in the genre. There's always more to be discovered in any genre.
>>68357584
I just wrongly assumed the point was to try and encourage stepping outside normal comfort zones and more variety, I guess I was mistaken.
>>68357571
well, I guess it's more glitch/ambient techno
but it's not like ambient has a very clear definition, right?
who here is into bandcamp ambient?
post your fav bandcamp record
pic related, Sparkwood Records have a ridiculously good output despite how small they are
>>68357817
I'm not sure I've ever found an ambient record on bandcamp that I loved, most of it to me has just seemed like comfortable and competent but boring and imagination-less stuff. I must admit I haven't searched all that extensively though.
We need to encourage more discussion in /gotw/ and build up an actual userbase, then it could become as popular as /daily/.
Keeping it on-topic, has anybody got any super-comfy ambient which makes you feel all warm inside? Stuff like The Disintegration Loops or Discrete Music.

so harmless and delicate it's actually a good sleep aid
>>68359727
It's cool but not really what I was after, it's pretty much straight up minimal drones.
>>68359824
Yeah, well hey, I'm really sorry
>>68359871
I'm sorry too
>>68359704
I feel like this is definitely a warm ambient album. I really don't get why it didn't get any praise on here when it came out, its easily my favorite album from this year

Name?
These threads would actually be pretty cool to have. The other generals are getting boring.

I can see the rationale of starting off with something mildly popular to establish some kind of userbase, then delve into more obscure stuff later. Personally i would find it more interesting with lesser known genres though.

One thing I would say is to make the thread image more distinctive and recognisable, perhaps something like pic related. 95% of /mu/ don't know about /gotw/ so you need to make it known before people start actively looking out for it.
>>68361410
this is probably a good idea
does anyone like ambient-y field recordings?
>>68357817
Used to check it out but i got lazy this year. Here's an old fav https://muhr.bandcamp.com/album/depersonalization

I remember that one album where the guy recorded ambient music in various derelict public spaces in Chernobyl like a swimming pool and a church. Super interesting concept but in practice the music was just kinda generic echoey ambient.
I really like Symphonies of the Planets, however.
>see the thread
>What a good idea!
>amb*ent
Dropped.
>>68362136
Jacob Kirkegaard - 4 Rooms
i remember enjoying it, but then again i don't really know anything about ambient
>>68362136
jacob kirkegaard - four rooms?
>I really like Symphonies of the Planets, however.
it's good but it's really heavily edited and has a bunch of synths thrown on top. the actual PWS data is interesting too but it's more like drony noise than ambient.

no links in archive, fak

Way to miss the entire point of the thread, asshole.

Where can I obtain this?
