Welcome to /gotw/!

/gotw/, which stands for genre of the week, is an ongoing thread in which we vote for a genre and then spend the week listening to it. Every Saturday a new genre is chosen. Once a genre is used, it can’t be used again until the next year. We will listen to, rate, and discuss albums & other works in the genre. Then, once the week is over, we do it all over again. The goal is to expose others to music they may not have heard before, and to get more into genres.

This week’s genre is ambient.

I guess I'll get the ball rolling

>Steve Roach - Structures from Silence (1984)

This album's pretty comfy. There's 3 tracks on here, each more emercive than the last. I think the title track was much longer than it needed to be, but ambient music is normally pretty long. If you want some comfy space ambient check it out.

>7/10

Next up is Eno's Ambient 4

This is a good idea for a thread. If you're a fan of Eno's Ambiebt series, definitely check out his latest record, The Ship. It's easily one of his best ever.
>>
This is the first time seeing this thread but I like the idea. I'm into ambient already so this will be a nice opportunity to expand my taste. If I enjoy Eno, Budd, and SOTL, what would you recommend to me? I guess I think of it as sort of musically satisfying and rich but still ambient and usually without percussion or vocals.

Oh and it's sunday. Happy listening.

This is a really great concept for a thread I hope it catches on.

>>68340357
I actually heard this for the first time the other day having been a big fan of both Eno and Cluster. Very impressive I enjoyed it a lot more than I expected, Wermet and Steinsame are both masterpieces. I'd probably give it an 8.5/10, maybe a 9 if it was strictly a 10 point scale.

Any thoughts on this album? Definitely one of my favorite ambient records and in my opinion the best kraut-ambient albums. I get a much more desolate vibe out of this than I do Phaedra or Rubicon.

Shit, I should have looked through the catalog before making a thread about Dropped Pianos.
Anyways...

What are some similar ambient albums to Dropped Pianos? I know it is a minimalist version of Ravedeath, but to me they are so much different; I prefer Dropped Pianos much more. Are there anymore super minimal ambient albums that can compare?

I like all of the ambient works by Eno, and yes, the first album is very minimal. But the vocal manipulations clash with the subtle piano imo. If the album was 100% piano focused then I think it would be much better.

love love LOVE yoshimura. music for nine postcards is top 5 ambient of all time for me.

check out this mix, which features yoshimura along with lots of other likeminded japanese ambient, and go from there (inoyama land, midori takada, etc.):

I have been getting into a lot of field recording/ sound collage myself.

Julia Holter's - Live Recordings (2010) album has a great mix of ambient instrumental elements, soothing and healing vocal layers, and illusive field recordings and samples.

This album, along with all of her early efforts, are criminally underrated and under discussed

This is the one of the few samples I could find on YT. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yoz7djrXErI

While this album is great, my favorite album that heavily uses field recordings and found sounds would have to be Set Fire To Flames - Sings Reign Rebuilder, however; this album would be considered more of a sound-collage rather than an ambient album.

bumping with this album.

I have always loved the piano works of Chopin and this album expands on his pieces by creating an ambient atmosphere around them.

Like this idea. So, I was never huge on ambient, I pretty much only listened to Eno and some random Vaporwave. Loved Eno's ambient works, especially the more synthetic ones (Apollo, For Films) - what are other essentials to fill my week with?

Budd's best work, by far. Sublime nocturnal ambient jazz. One of the the closest things in spirit to Miles Davis's In a Silent Way, and that's my favorite album of all time. I love how buttery, sparkly Fender Rhodes and celeste sonically dominate the album. After this, Budd mainly eschewed the Rhodes for relatively uninteresting treated pianos. Big shame imo. Also there's a fucking operatic Pharaoh Sanders cover. Unbelievable.

Also, for me Pavilion of Dreams has always evoked the cover of pic related (though musically it's unrelated).

OP here, I got work tomorrow and I won't get home until late. Can someone make this thread for me if this thread dies? All you have to do is copy the sticky and picture but change "last thread" to this one. Thanks in advance!

Zeit is possibly one of the best albums of all time. Zeit is way too powerful to just be ambient. I don't know why but everytime i listen to it i get absorbed and i just can't focus on anything other than the album. Birth Of Liquid Prejades is my favorite song of all time.

Half the shit is above decent ambient tracks and the other half is cheesy MIDI-sounding music, which is weird because these tracks come from 70s movies. I thought MIDI was an 80s and 90s thing but I guess I'm wrong. Maybe they were rerecorded, idk. If you ain't down with MIDI then get your pleb ass off mu and sit with the losers. Overall, this gets a...
