What is the best GBV album and why is it Bee Thousand?
Bee Thousand, but Alien Lanes is a close second.
Bee Thousand is a top 5 album for me and it makes me endlessly sad that no other GBV album comes close in tone or consistency. They have good songs on every album but Bee Thousand is on another world

Alien Lanes, bro
Bee Thousand has great songs, but it's also fairly consistent. The sequencing and pacing is excellent. Not sure if they did it on purpose, but it works. Alien Lanes has higher highs, but also lower lows, and the short weird songs are ordered in a way that makes them more jarring. Propeller and Vampire on Titus don't quite have the songs, and Under the Bushes Under the Stars is a bit too long.
It's probably my favorite overall but Under the Bushes Under the Stars and Propeller are quite good too.

As far as consistency of quality is concerned, Bee Thousand and Under The Bushes are the best GBV albums.
Bee Thousand might have the advantage because a lot more territory is covered on it compared to UTB. A lot more variety to the songwriting and the emotional palette on Bee Thousand.
Personal favorites these days are Vampire On Titus and Same Place The Fly Got Smashed.
Vampire On Titus in particular is a mindblowing record, total alcohol-soaked winter depression vibes.
Their run of EPs throughout the early-to-mid 90s was ace as well. Pollard is a genius and Sprout is not far behind him.

This. My favorite album and for a while all other GBV sounded like a cheap imitation. I came around but still feel this way in some respects

Propeller is very close 2nd
Coming in 3rd for me is From A Compound Eye. One of Pollard's super underrated solo works.
