Welcome to /gotw/!

/gotw/, with stands for genre of the week, is an ongoing thread in which we vote for a genre and then spend the week listening to it. Every Saturday a new genre is chosen. Once a genre is used, it can’t be used again until the next year. We will listen to, rate, and discuss albums & other works in the genre. Then, once the week is over, we do it all over again. The goal is to expose others to music they may not have heard before, and to get more into genres.

This week’s genre is ambient.

>Finding music in that genre:

>Pastebin of genres we’ve used this year:

Enjoy your stay!

I'm gonna go ahead and plug one of my favorite ambient albums, Substrata by Biosphere.

Biosphere was a Norwegian musician best known as one of the pioneers of "arctic ambient," a subgenre of ambient music focused on soundscapes that evoked imagery of arctic landscapes. He was known for incorporating samples of old movies and tv shows into his work, notably excerpts from John Carpenter's The Thing.

Substrata is one of his best works, incredibly beautiful and, arguably, the flagship album of the arctic ambient subgenre.

I like the idea of this.

OP you probably should've picked a better genre to get people interested in this, just to get the ball rolling for the first thread. I don't care much about ambient but fuck me if I'm going to let a thread on genuine music discussion die.

Anyone have any darker ambient recs? I really like pic related and I've listened to that Caretaker album, Empty Bliss, a couple times. Also I like the ambient stuff on Shaking the Habitual.

This was interesting, liked the feel but didn't care much for the vocal samples.

Also, these threads might be pretty fun

Love this. Minecraft undoubtedly turned to shit, but C418 did a great job on its soundtrack.

Bloodmist - Sheen is a dark ambient album that came out this year that got a little bit of attention around here a few months ago. I didn't care for it but you might.

I'm honestly not well versed in ambient music at all.

>>68323120
I've heard really good things about this. Someone had a great what I expected/what I got post for it where they expected little kids fighting but got Aphex Twin.

Hey btw, it might be a good idea to incorporate something into the title or first line of the OP along the lines of "Week 1, Day 3" or whatever so people can keep the threads going during the week and keep track of where we're at.

>>68323458
Listening to it now, its pretty nice so far. Seems like a good study album.

What a great soundtrack, so many great memories with it. I'll always feel weird about how minecraft became a kids game, like it makes sense but still

tripcode/fag copypasta (self.copypasta)

submitted 1 year ago by Psych0Fir3

Hi there!

You seem to have made a bit of a mistake in your post. Luckily, the users of 4chan are always willing to help you clear this problem right up! You appear to have used a tripcode when posting, but your identity has nothing at all to do with the conversation! Whoops! You should always remember to stop using your tripcode when the thread it was used for is gone, unless another one is started! Posting with a tripcode when it isn't necessary is poor form. You should always try to post anonymously, unless your identity is absolutely vital to the post that you're making!

Now, there's no need to thank me - I'm just doing my bit to help you get used to the anonymous image-board culture!

basinski lore
>Basinski has said that he finished the project the morning of the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City, and sat on the roof of his apartment building in Brooklyn with friends listening to the project as the World Trade Center towers collapsed.
>>
just got into ambient recently, really enjoying it, but what exactly is dark ambient and field recordings? What are good field recordings albums.
>>
>>68324180
Got anything darker? So far its just sounding pretty peaceful to me. Not saying its not dark, just not working for me

>>68324786
"Dark ambient is a form of Post-Industrial music that emphasizes an ominous, gloomy, and dissonant atmosphere. Similarly to Ambient, the genre often abandons traditional music structure, but it tends to be more eerie and unsettling than other styles of ambient."

"Material recorded outside of a recording studio for the purpose of capturing the audible illustration of an environment. Captured sound can be either natural (Nature Recordings, such as the sound of water, wind, animal calls, etc.) or anthropogenic (e.g. noises caused by moving trains, city traffic or Numbers Stations Broadcasts)."
>>
>>68324786
afaik field recording is pretty much anything that is not specifically recorded in a studio or similar. But I am not big into ambient, so maybe it has a different meaning in that context.
>>
>>68324786
Dark ambient is ambient with a dark atmosphere. Try out this: >>68323498 for a good example of dark ambient. Field recordings are just recordings outside of a studio. See the NASA Voyager Recordings series.
