I'm gonna go ahead and plug one of my favorite ambient albums, Substrata by Biosphere.

Biosphere was a Norwegian musician best known as one of the pioneers of "arctic ambient," a subgenre of ambient music focused on soundscapes that evoked imagery of arctic landscapes. He was known for incorporating samples of old movies and tv shows into his work, notably excerpts from John Carpenter's The Thing.

Substrata is one of his best works, incredibly beautiful and, arguably, the flagship album of the arctic ambient subgenre.

OP you probably should've picked a better genre to get people interested in this, just to get the ball rolling for the first thread. I don't care much about ambient but fuck me if I'm going to let a thread on genuine music discussion die.

Anyone have any darker ambient recs? I really like pic related and I've listened to that Caretaker album, Empty Bliss, a couple times. Also I like the ambient stuff on Shaking the Habitual.

Bloodmist - Sheen is a dark ambient album that came out this year that got a little bit of attention around here a few months ago. I didn't care for it but you might.

just got into ambient recently, really enjoying it, but what exactly is dark ambient and field recordings? What are good field recordings albums.

afaik field recording is pretty much anything that is not specifically recorded in a studio or similar. But I am not big into ambient, so maybe it has a different meaning in that context.
