Why was the 80s such an awful decade for music?
80s music is great
Pet shop boys is GOAT

DeMartini was a beastly guitarist, though.
It wasn't
Listen to Left of the Dial: Dispatches from the '80s Underground
Alternative music was awesome, but most people remember only butt/hair rock, shitty metal and beginnings of hip hop.
The 80s didn't have worse music than any other decade, unfortunately MTV ended up amplifying the shitty stuff.
The 80s was when music got fragmented into different scenes and subcultures. In the 60s-70s, rock was just rock. You could have Kansas, Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Bob Dylan, and Steely Dan all next to each other on your record shelf. By the 80s, everything was either you were a metalhead with giant poof hair or some special snowflake alternagoth who listened to the Pixies and the Cure and had hair covering your eyes.

80s music tends to have a very plastic, sterile sound that a lot of people don't like.

Fuck off, Round and Round is a tune
Wanted Man is also badass.

These posters make a good point.
If you listened to the radio and/or watched the Empty Vee then one would assume that the 1980s produced shit but people used to assume the thing same about music that came out in the 1970s but a lot of great music came out of that decade as well.
Don't let crap like Ratt and bands of that ilk cloud your taste otherwise you might forget that Motorhead released Ace of Spades in the 1980s.
I used to think the 1970s were shit because of disco until I remembered that Alice Cooper released Killer and Billion Dollar Babies and the first New York Dolls album came out in 1973.

But you can say that about every decade
If you don't like prog rock and stuff in general on the style of Blondie, Carole King and Bruce Springsteen you'll probably find the 70s fucking terrible yet there was a lot more music beyond that.
Same for the 90s, if you don't like alt rock, techno and hip hop then you probably will have a hard time going through the more highlighted albums
The only decade everyone seems to agree was great is the 60s
The 80s had some of the the best music, but it wasn't on the radio or MTV.
'60s>'80s>'70s>90's>'00s
It's pretty much downhill.
Literally the best decade

What an ignorant, pleabian question.
Anyone could cherry pick a Ratt-like from any period of music.
If you think hair metal is all there is to the 80s then you need to lurk more.
The 80s were only bad if you were too lazy to look further into the decade than the shitty mainstream acts like Michael Jackson, Phil Collins and all those awful glam rock bands that were popping everywhere.
>>68315146
80s > 60s > 90s > 00s > 70s
too soon to classify the 10s
>>68316509
>Michael Jackson
>Phil Collins
>not GOAT
You probably meant Michael Bolton, right?
To be perfectly honest, 80s were probably the golden age of mainstream pop.
70s were a fucking folk rock wasteland.

60s were pretty bad for the same reason as the other decades.
For every good band, there are like twenty mediocre flash in the pan groups. They aren't completely terrible, but calling the whole decade "great" is a stretch.
Joy Division - Closer
Talking Heads - Remain in Light
King Crimson - Discipline
Genesis - Duke
Peter Gabriel - Melt
The Smiths - The Queen is Dead
Pixies - Doolittle
Metallica - The Master of Puppets
The Cure - Pornography
Kate Bush - Hounds of Love
Iron Maiden - Powerslave
Rush - Moving Pictures
R.E.M - Murmur
Tears For Fears - Songs From the Big Chair
Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell
If you listen to all these and say the 80s were bad, you should literally kys.
>>68314018
>beginnings of hip-hop
>a bad thing
Welp, I see this board has gone to shit
>>68316509
>Phil Collins and MJ were bad
What the hell is this thread
honestly I would say the 80s is around the third best decade for music at least
>>68316650
>Tears For Fears - Songs From the Big Chair
I've seen a lot of threads about this album and people rec'd me it many times as well, I should probably listen to it already.
