Damon doesn't give two shits about being popular, neither does he see Gorillaz as a 'side project', in fact if you saw any of his interviews during The Magic Whip it is clear he doesn't want anything to do with Blur anymore and would rather do more interesting things like a new Gorillaz album
Also Gorillaz is a Damon solo project, but it is one that is obviously more enjoyable to work on than something like Everyday Robots, so why wouldn't he want to continue with it?
