Boring cliche'd riffs and chugging. Fuck off with that shit. Brutal Death is what killed death metal, making people think simple riffs tuned way down and being repetitive as fuck is somehow way more interesting than the more intricate shit OSDM bands were doing.

Not metal exactly but metal-related.

What are some good dungeonsynth and neoclassical albums that sound relatively less dorky?

I do kind of like how many (most) of them have the ambiance of a Dungeons & Dragons game session, but I'm wondering which are maybe less hokey.

Burzum, for instance, an influence here, touches on similar similar ideas and zones, but does it I think in a more experimental and compelling way... as dark ambient with 'Thulean' vibes.

I'm probably just asking for dark ambient and dark experimental here, but I guess I want dungeonsynth and neofolk / neoclassical that is a little more experimental rather than having that cheap cable fantasy movie faux-strings and horns sound. Although I guess that in itself is kind of perversely weird and experimental in its own way.

I wish there were more artists doing that kind of thing, but they usually just end up sounding like a bad 80s fantasy soundtrack with hokey synth horns doing fanfares

the difference being that Burzum was actually much more open-minded than people might think and was inspired by a lot of techno and ambient, in addition to old Norse text and 19th Century Germanic racialist theories on Hyperborea and whatnot, which makes for a really interesting result. whereas a lot of these other guys just read stormfront and play D&D but didn't delve into much experimental. the results are weird in their own way though, I will admit.

I kinda wish he had ended the project right after Belus. I think I'm alone in this, but I consider Belus to be a) his best project post-Filosofem by far and b) a perfect way to end his career. He should have released it as a final statement: "Your jail and my distancing from the scene mean shit; I'm still the best around". But Belus' value kept getting dilluted with each mediocre release. Fallen feels like a collection of Belus' b-sides, Sol Austan etc is Hliðskjálf's unwanted brother and while Umskiptar has its moments (I quite like the idea of an album that is mostly guitar riffs with no drumming) it overstays its welcome, and Ways Of Yore is very frustrating because there are dozens of excellent ideas that were executed very poorly.

Kinda glad he seems to be completely done doing music now.

The problem with Welkin isn't that the artwork is at odds with the theme/sound of the album though, in fact if you have a good look at the artwork it seems pretty in line with the kind of music on the album. The problem is that it's just a really shitty illustration that's difficult to decipher. Compared to Nightside Eclipse which is a really easy to read and visually cogent illustration. Welkin's artwork is just a clusterfuck mess in comparison, it looks like baby diarrhea on a canvas.

Whenever I tried it, I just made it anything that had Black Metal to a reasonable degree.
I.e Blackened Death Metal was fair game or those bands that are largely ambient with BM bits like Draumur or Lustre.

It added just enough variety to cope.

The closest to harshes I could ever manage was a Slayer-esque yell, which slowly got hoarser and fainter as the practice went on.
