To be fair he was their primary lead vocalist. They needed someone to take front and center while the Wilson's laid down their beautiful harmonies in the background. And he didn't do a bad job. He fit with the rest of the band sonically and was good at doing really deep vocals too. He was just a shitty lyricist and was against musical growth.

I'm pretty sure Carl is the one who deserves credit for that. Everything I've read says he became the musical director of the group after Brian stepped back.

Brian Wilson wasn't really a guitar player in the first place. He was a composer who almost always hired session musicians for recording.

Putting aside the caretakers and band members who had to grab him by the collar, Brian was the brains behind the group. He was the one responsible for making them as successful as they were.

remember before the Beach Boys were studio trick they were an actual live band. You're right, Brian Wilson is smart. That's why he brought in Mike Love because they needed a charismatic lead singer. I know Brian wasn't much of a bassist, but afaik the only Beach Boy who ever played on their later records was Carl. I didn't mean to say they sucked at guitar/bass, I meant to say they didn't have the stage presence or charm of Mike Love.

You're right except for the last part.

Yes it's true that the girls/cars/surfing songs were what made them famous and that's the majority of their hits and many of those songs will be remembered for a long time.

However, it's not out of place to think Pet Sounds is what they will be remembered for the longest. It still has two of their biggest hits in Wouldn't It Be Nice and God Only Knows but it is also their one and only truly classic album. Well perhaps Today is as well. But critics and music historians will write much more about Pet Sounds than they will about Shut Down Vol. 2 or All Summer Long.

Some of you here might be familiar with the Nietzschean concept of Apollonian and Dionysian

Now hear this bold claim I have to make. Mike Love and Brian represent Apollonian and Dionysian respectively.

Mike Love = reason and logical thinking
Brian Wilson = appeals to the emotions and instincts.

Each need each other to keep themselves in check. Think of what would have happened if each had their way. If Mike Love was incharge none of the non-formulaic stuff would have happened and it would be strict business and no great artistic work coming out. From the very start Brian might have bankrupted the band if he tried expanding his creative visions. Pet sounds was only possible because of the less experimental success they had adding to the freedom Brian could have over the project money wise.

Mike's vocals were essential to their sound and early success. He was literally their frontman for the first 2 years of their existence and continued to take lead vocals on the majority of their big hits.

His vocals were among the worst in the band overall, but he's still not a bad singer. His bandmates were all just better. Listen to him on Meant For You from Friends. His lower range is fucking excellent too and was super important to rounding out the band's harmonies (nobody else could sing as low as him, so without him Brian wouldn't have anyone to dish out those sick bass parts). Listen to him towards the end of You Still Believe in Me, he hits some really goddamn low notes.

He isn't a completely shitty lyricist. You realize he wrote the lyrics to Good Vibrations right? He literally did it in a car ride on the way to the studio to record.

Also Carl is literally the one who kept the band together. He took a ton of songwriting upon himself, learned how to produce from Brian, and became their de facto frontman.
