>In 2015, Rolling Stone named O'Brien the 59th greatest guitarist of all time.
How? Radiohead could kick him out right now and you wouldn't notice a single difference on LP10.
He doesn't display the technical ability or genuine musical talent that Jonny Greenwood does and he isn't the main creative source of Radiohead. What does he actually do?

He plays the guitar. Anyone can play the guitar.

He did an awful lot pre-Kid A, but yeah, it can be harder to tell his definite role since then. I think if you watch, say, their From The Basement sessions you can see a lot of what he does. He fills out their songs, he adds a lot of texture, I think he's responsible for a lot of the atmospheric sounds in Radiohead's work. Plus, he's a fucking brilliant backing vocalist.
He's certainly no Thom or Jonny, but he doesn't need to be.

so you just never give anyone credit for ability at their instrument or what?

I'm presuming it's a reference to the Radiohead song 'Anyone Can Play Guitar' on Pablo Honey.

its as simple as renowned bands = popular guitarists
are they going to just single out your soundcloud album because you are a sick guitar player or are they going to just go with a band everyone likes

is joke?

I feel bad for Ed.
>join band with a couple of mates to make cool rock music
>signed to a label and have a hit song from debut album
>next album is slept on but gets critical praise
>band leader gets obsessed with 'muh bleep bloops'
>third album blends rock and electronic music, and is one of the most praised albums of all time
>by the time of the fourth album guitars aren't even the focal point anymore
>people make fun of him and don't even know what he does anymore

OK computer is hardly electronic. Pretty much as raw as the bends. And Ed clearly did a lot on okc

I'm sure Ed's feelings would be hurt if he knew what OP was saying about him.

>be in greatest rock band of the current age
>used to be a focal center of the band because muh guitars
>now barely do anything, but get paid tons of money and make critically acclaimed records
>only downside is internet memes
He's the texture guy. He adds a lot of the stuff that fills out the sound, like the angelic chord in Videotape for one example. That's a pretty fun role to play, even if it isn't a very centered one.
>>68274150
you can't spell radiohead without ED

He does more than you think he does. Listen to soundboard tapes of Kid A being played live, all the classic guitar parts on that album were him while Greenwood was fucking around with synths
