Abominable taste
I don't think anything can top Blackstar.
The immediate, emotional transformation that Bowie's album underwent between the day it dropped and the day he died was some kind of artistic alchemy- the likes of which no one has ever pulled off before:
Songs that seemed innocuous or obtuse suddenly became dramatically super-heavy.
"Where the fuck did Monday go?" was no longer some kind of abstract pondering, but a tear-stained assessment of January 11, 2016.
The Lazarus video, which initially seemed like standard Bowie weirdness, revealed itself to be an open-casket funeral.
It's incomparable, even in a stacked field.

>>68279695
>Objective 4/10
Don't get upset because you don't get it.
It is a spiritual experience and flows like a dream, personally my favorite album of his. I wouldn't expect you to "get" it, it's more for the likes for somebody's spiritual journey and the music actually matches his messages well. I will still say the track titles are somewhat pretentious but that has nothing to do with the music quality. It will grow on you in time, definetely after you stop taking Fantano's opinions so seriously m9

this dude just doesn't get it.
I will say that CLPPNG and Midcity weren't that great to me (which I believe are Fat Ant's fave clipping. albums anyways) but I had Splendor and Misery rated 10/10 before Fantano reviewed that shit. so Opinion discarded.
But I can understand that complaint on Bon Iver, which is why I say "He doesn't get it", because although it's not a transcendent spiritual experience, it's still an exploratory one which I enjoy a lot. Not AOTY, but certainly not the dissapointment to which you believe it is.
By the way, if I think something different than you, it isn't objective anymore..isn't it?

That's kinda how I'm feeling. Was Blackstar the best album anyone's put out this year in terms of the music itself? IMO no. But Bowie's death lends the album a deep, tragic, beautiful significance in such a dramatic and epic way. No other album this year, or most any year has been able to pull off anything like that.
It's also honoring Bowie's musical career to have Blackstar as your AOTY, so I think it kind of an obligation for any huge Bowie fan.
Plus the music is pretty great.

Same, that's my runner-up to Blackstar,
>>68289683
Honestly, I listened to Blackstar before Bowie died and I was really underwhelmed. Then, everyone went on about how this was his magnum opus and a chillingly fitting end to his career. Upon revisiting, it's still kind of a mediocre attempt to dig into popular modern production styles. Bad? No. Amazing? No. It's alright, and Bowie's death shouldn't affect someone's opinion of the album. Yeah, Closer got put into a different perspective with the death of the tortured soul who wrote that music, but it was fucking good music regardless of circumstances surrounding it.
it's lit
>>68276014
this one's good too
>>68289683
>>68289815
Addendum: as a massive Bowie fan, you are not obligated to name this as AOTY, nor even as a particularly great album. Bowie himself would call that kind of behavior ridiculous, most likely. Blindly praising art solely due to the person behind the art? Gross.

Slime Season 3 or JEFFREY by Young Thug. Slime Season 3 is better. All of the songs on there were great. I only liked Harambe and Floyd Mayweather from JEFFREY. Guwop and Wyclef Jean weren't bad though.
That's from this year. If we're talking about in general then Cry Baby by Melanie Martinez. Probably one of my all time favorite albums. Absolutely amazing. Didn't get the credit it deserved. Very underrated, but it's not like it's an unknown album. It peaked at 6 on the Billboard charts and it has spent 59 weeks on the charts while recently going up again. Good to see that she's getting the recognition she deserves. Not bad for a debut album on top of that.
In terms of favorite mixtape in general then probably If You're Reading This It's Too Late by Drake. Probably the best thing he's done. I was hoping Views would be more like it, but the only song that reminded me of IYRTITL was Hype, but Views was a calm album in general. Like a mix between Nothing Was The Same and Take Care for me with more feelies.

>>68290967
cold but accurate
>>68289215
anything candid? he kinda gives off that kinda vibe in his music, but it does fit with it desu
Any decent debut albums this year?
Every album I've liked has been from an established musician, and none of them have been the best in their discography.
>>68290814
you copy-pasted this from a reddit thread right
Can't really decide between Alcest, DIIV, Radio dept and Nick Cave but probably the latter
>>68290375
it's pretty good, but sense/forbidden are just lazy
>>68290375
massive disappointment compared to their last s/t
>>68292112
Lol no
>>68292112
it's alright at its best
if anything, another good modern baseball record, but shit compared to all the other good stuff that came out this year
literally just a strong 6
Fuck you all, vektor is amazing
>>68286133
was coming here to post this. I think Act IV has better individual songs but Act V is just better as a whole. What a piece of art.
>>68286133
glad to see these guys getting some love though I guess it's a good thing they haven't left the underground

strong choice
no fucking contest
Just dropped 7 hours ago ( even though I listened to it leaked yesterday ) and its easily the best album of the year so far for me, right above moose bloods Blush.
Joyce Manor really came thru on this one. While it's not the rowdy Joyce manor that most of /mu/ loves, it's still so very excellent. Probably my fav Joyce manor album ever. Each song after the other is a bop, I had to save every single song to my playlist, and I don't usually do that. Highly recommend.

MY BOY
any of these
>>68292112
>>68286019
was so disappointed with these
>>68277181
This album is absolutely great, but it's just such a fucking downer that I don't want to keep listening to it a lot. It's Top 10 list worthy, for sure, but I just can't label it AOTY.
>>68277410
Still this for me.
>implying this isn't AOTY
>>68289781
I love his stuff, and I think this album is a step in the right direction compared to his last album, but it just didn't have any staying power with me.

>>68277955
solid runner up
>>68297334
wow what the fuck is this garbage?
quickly looked it up as I was unaware, and was genuinely shocked by what I heard. i mean the sunbather meme was shame enough for the 'black metal' community, but what is this?
>>68282513
And holy fuck does TLOP sounds lazy compared to the new Meshuggah
>>68297373
blood incantation fan pls
>>68289815
>>68289844
O.K. yeah, that's not really what I meant. If you love Bowie but don't actually like the album you're obviously not "obligated" to call it your AOTY, and in fact doing so would be stupid. If you love Bowie and do love the album, you're still not "obligated" to call it your AOTY, but I think that doing so is paying your respects, kinda like putting flowers on someone's grave.
>no one's posted the real AOTY yet

this album is so good.

I can't pick my AOTY but in the running is:
Death Grips - Bottomless Pit
Swans - The Glowing Man
Danny Brown - Atrocity Exhibition
Touche Amore - Stage Four
David Bowie - Blackstar
>>68303777
I was really disappointed with this, I enjoyed the debut but they lost loads of personality and colour on this album
>>68304002
what are you on about, this album was far harder hitting, musically way more emotional. Anger is an emotion, remember?
"cheer up london" isn't a fucking emotion, normie.

well, ok, aren't you a special snowflake.
since when is an album being hard hitting and angrier the only measure of how good it is, I'm happy for you, glad you enjoyed it but it was way more samey to me and they aren't that good at being angry, of the top of my head Nails, Full Of Hell, The Chariot, Dillinger Escape Plan, Converge, Dangers, Hate Fuck, Admiral Angry, The Flex, Arms Race, Blind Authority and Employed To Serve ALL make far more visceral, harder hitting and just straight up more interesting angry music.
>>68304192
all hard hitting stuff is relative.
Why it's my aotysf:
-the first few songs, spit it out to take control, are obviously quite generic lyrically when it comes to any politicore punk, the instrumentation is simplistic as hell, since there's only really two people, but yet the garage punk vibes in production (hats off to Mike D) are fantastic, the rawness behind the execution is key to the recordings, over the overproduced lightweight debut record.
-then the album gets more interesting, the Skit, "Mr Industry", is lyrically far more focused on the negligence of the current administration and the last 4 (David Cameron, Cameron and Clegg, Brown, and Blair) of industry and the working class. The music in the next few tracks simmers down, with some post-punk vibes in Lies especially, and executed well within the album, then Fuck the Hi-Hat returns to the original message of the album, to be punk, to be raw, and to try things out whilst reusing old punk tropes (notably the lack of hi-hat).
-Then the final few songs shimmer as being similar to the best tracks off of the first album, but with far better production.
-Final reason? I haven't listened to that many albums this year, so out of this, Blonde, AMSP, and a few bandcamp records, this wins it.
Blonde
I haven't listened to that much music yet this year, but this one is really worth listening to
any weebs in here

I can agree on that, the way it's all led up to the climax in the flame is gone the fire remains and then A Beginning as the ultimate closer. Absolutely prime shit
