Honestly more recently I am not as sure and am revisiting the stuff since it's been a while, but I have really been enjoying pic more than I remember I did. Great riffs that sound black metal while also having a meatier feel to them, the percussion section's cool since the normal drums are also backed by electronic drum machine parts and industrial sounds, and lastly it has some of the most balance synth keys parts in any black metal record going beyond the supplementary feel (ex. Emperor's first album) but not letting them dominate (ex. Emperor's second album, later Dimmu/Cradle shit, etc.)

Samael's first four are all great imo. But yeah Ceremony definitely has a weird feel to it where you first hear something not common in black metal, expecting to feel very jarred by it, but...don't actually feel that jarred. In fact the not feeling that jarred is very jarring in of itself.

Yeah but those are some of the only few good black thrash bands though
Metallica, anthrax and slayer definetly sound boring if you've been through more extreme metal already but megadeth still holds up imo, they had some nasty riffs, kreator's early stuff is pretty good death/thrash and voivod is very hit and miss
Anyway my favourite scene is polish tech thrash anyway

Personally it is hands down Filosofem. No other black metal album that I've listened to has been able to deliver the engrossing atmosphere and raw emotion that I feel from this record. When I imagine 'black metal' this is the sound that comes to my mind. I feel like Varg was able to uniquely separate his sound from older 'first wave' or trash metal albums to create what I consider true black metal. The feeling that this record invokes inside of me is almost like a spell, I feel like I'm being delivered on some sort of journey or receiving a message. The vocals on this album in particular are some of the best in all of black metal (or just what I prefer), only other vocals that compare are Dead's. Some may feel the ambient 'interlude' track is a bit long winded or just plain unnecessary, but I feel like it adds so much to the album in a very stark nordic minimalism type of way. Or that the track is simply putting you into a trance to then pull you from it and plunge you back into darkness, like waking up from a deep slumber. This probably sounds pretentious as fuck but I don't care, I fucking love this album and I'm a Varg fan boy. One of the few 10/10 albums in my book from any genre. Other BM albums that top my list are Bathory - ST and Paysage d'hiver - Das Tor. Live in Leipzig is another gem, the vocals on that record chill my bones. Also a big Master's Hammer fan although they're not quite dark enough for me to consider 'true'.

I would disagree on both statements. While I am a fan of Hvis lyset tarr os (I'm a fan of all of vargs work and can't think of any of his albums that I would rate lower than a 5/10) tonally I find that it and Filosofem are pretty different. The synths used for Hvis (aside from the last song) are more vocal and create a different atmosphere, one that is more epic and less mysterious or dream like, I favor Filosofems. I much prefer Filosofems structure too although Hvis may have better technical composition but I never felt like that meant much in black metal as long as the sound/tone was there. Honestly, Filosofem just holds a really special place in my heart and nothing else has been able to make me feel like that album does.

Good meme. Atillas vocals make me laugh through portions of the album honestly. Also the sound just doesn't feel right to me, it seems way too generic, doesn't even feel all that dark to me at times. That's why i prefer just listening to the tracks from that album that are on Live at Leipzig which sounds 100% more dark, raw, and 'true'. Every time I hear the live Freezing Moon I still get chills.
