You fucking dicknugget, don't ever try to "improve" someone's taste, especially if you're so clueless as to not even be able of coming up with recommendations yourself. What they listen to is perfectly acceptable and they're probably happy for it. Only ever go out on a limb and recommend music to people if either a) they specifically ask for it or b) you know something similar to what they enjoy and think they might also enjoy what you have to recommend.

Destroy All Monsters - 1974 - 1976 (1994)
>noise rock, experimental rock, experimental

I suppose three and a half hours is much longer than this has any right to be, but it's definitely an experience. Honestly, I expected something much more "rocky", considering how often I hear this band referred to as "noise rock" or "proto-punk", but the vast majority of this is straight-up noise, with a lot of free jazz leanings. The first disc is probably the most structured, with songs mostly structured in a typical rock fashion, but lo-fi, creepy as hell, and with a heavy emphasis on tribal percussion. The one thing I don't care for about this sound is the vocals, they just rub me the wrong way. The second disc is completely off-the-wall, and it's wonderful. So much anachronistic tape manipulation, a heavier emphasis on free jazz ("Space Beat" is incredible), dense sound collages, it's all pretty incredible. Adding to it is how well it still keeps the general spooky atmosphere of the first disc, while still completely changing the sound in a more experimental direction. The third disc is probably my least favorite. It's got a bigger emphasis on vocals, and they still grate on me a lot. The music is still spooky and dense (a bit less creative than the first two discs, maybe), but the vocals are fairly detrimental on the quality. It's definitely not bad, but certainly worse than the first two discs. The vocals aren't great (neither are the songs that focus on non-verbal mouth sounds, eugh), and disc three definitely hurts my enjoyment of the compilation as a whole, but it's still an interesting, ahead of its time listen.

Burial - Kindred
It cool, doesn't rely on a repetitive motif going over and over again throughout the track, but tries to evolve a very specific atmosphere, I don't think there's a need to describe it. I'm not very familiar with the rest of Burial, but I definitely prefer this over Rival Dealer. Good for relistens (that I like)

Savages - Silence Yourself
Eh they know how to play some catchy tunes? All the accusations about them stealing everything from other bands are not baseless, you know. You can only see some glimpses of originality as they drown in the layers of wannabe %bandname% attempts to make music. The whole approach seems like a misuse of the image they're posing, which I find somewhat disturbing for me personally. I am quite reluctant about how to rate it, catchy tunes and instrument proficiency just don't make up for the off feeling I have about this piece.

In Flames - The Jester Race
>melodic death metal

Melodeath is one of the metal genres that I’ve never really explored, but I’ve heard from many sources that In Flames, and specifically this album, are the best place to start, so here goes I guess.

To be honest (family), I’d never really call this death metal at all, I mean sure the vocalist gutturgrowls and the drums do their fair share of doublekicks, for the most part the trebly guitar riffs and acoustic/fantasy atmosphere make this sound more like slower, harsher power metal than what I’m used to in DEATHmetal. That’s not really a complaint though; I’d even say I enjoy the “melo” way more than the “death” on this thing.

While listening, and while recalling the album in general, the things that come to mind are the great guitar harmonies, the interesting chord progressions and arpeggios during the acoustic bits, and generally and the instrumental tracks as a whole (“The Jester’s Dance”, “Wayfaerer”). I.e. all the parts where theres no vocals. Not to say that I don’t like harsh metal vocals, but especially in an album like this where the melodicism of the guitars is so integral to the album’s appeal, I found myself wishing the vocalist would just shut up and let the guitars do more extended instrumental sections. For example, “Artifacts of the Black Rain” has one of the most boring verses on the whole album, but as soon as the verse is over and that guitar riff kicks in, I’m in love with it. Unfortunately, then the instrumental break ends and it goes back to a vocal section and I’m bored again.

(1/2)
>>
>>68247956
Again, I want to make it clear how much I really love the instrumental tracks on here. The 2 minute “Jester’s Dance” begins and ends with a beautiful, atmospheric, electric guitar arpeggio, and when it’s just played over the drums and bass, it creates some really good negative space in a usually-maximalist genre. On the other end of the spectrum is “Wayfaerer”, which transitions from swinging power chords to a dark, jazzy synth solo over chugging guitars, and ends with triumphant guitar flourishes right out of a classic rock song. And not a single deathgrowl in sight.

Overall: Mixed feelings. Sometimes I like it, sometimes I’m bored out of my skull. The guitar work is phenomenal and some of the best melody-writing I’ve heard in metal in a long time, but the album doesn’t seem to realise it’s own strengths, and therefore doesn’t capitalize on them enough to let them really shine through.

Howls of Ebb - Vigils of the 3rd Eye (2014)
>black metal, death doom metal, death metal

The song structures are actually quite interesting, but the sound itself has absolutely no power. The guitars are too clean, the drums have no kick or weight to them at all, and all the instruments just completely blend into each other. Take the beginning of "The Arc. The Vine. The Blight". The tremolo picking would sound great with more distortion, but it just sounds so weak and pitiful as is. The experimental elements to this (mainly various "whoosh" noises) add nothing, but are sometimes cool to listen to. With better production and a better sound, for lack of a better word, these frankly awesome songs could be done justice, but with the thin, weak production the album is just an amorphous mess of weak sound.

2.0+

Scott Tuma - Hard Again (2001)
>avant-folk, ambient

Starts off incredibly promisting, with ultra-pastoral guitar meshing with beautiful ambient in a totally seamless manner, but then the first track just gets repeated eight more times. There is no better background music than this, the basic sound is pretty as hell, there's nothing offensive about it, and the repetition of certain motifs and melodies is relaxing and hypnotic, to a degree. But listening to it attentively is just a slog, Tuma has such a pretty sound and is such a wonderful guitarists but his songs don't do a damn thing, they just meander along with no clear go. Very pretty, but insubstantial as hell.

>I hate to say it but once again, another big name artist releases an underwhelming album. Could this be a sign that we need new faces in the scene more than ever?
Historically speaking, artists just start releasing bad albums after a while, and most of the big names have probably been hanging around for a bit too long. Even as they experiment with each album, their experiments are ridiculously tame.

And while I don't have any empirical evidence to support this, I'd agree that we could use some more new faces. For the last few years the internet hype machine has been doing a pretty poor job of this outside of hip hop, but hopefully people will get their shit together soon enough. Or maybe good ol' rock really is dead and all that.

The Screamers - Demos 1977-78 (????)
>synth punk, art punk

The synth sound is a bit irritating and most of the songs sound similar, but this could've changed the face of punk if it was properly released. The vocalist is great, but the way the synths interact and are juxtaposed with the live drums is wonderful, the weight that the synths don't have is made up for in spades with this percussive element. It's really cool to hear synth-driven punk in a more maximalist, energetic context, especially after falling in love with Suicide's sparse, skeletal sound. These demos have their issues (the recording quality is shit, but that's to be expected), but they're energetic, innovative, and just plain fun to listen to.

Dear /daily/, could I bother you for some of your favourite 2016 releases?

So far I have BBNG, tricot, DJ Shadow, Mats Gustaffson, Swans, and Xiu Xiu's 2016 releases on my list. I've completed a dozen or two albums not on the chart or above as well, but there's still a lot I haven't heard.

04/10 - Vanishing Twin "Choose Your Own Adventure"
Listens: 3
Choice: The Conservation of Energy, Choose Your Own Adventure

Choose Your Own Adventure weaves together dreamy pop with extended spacey jams quite handily. And all through the album runs this smooth, soothing bass which is the highlight in my mind.

Unfortunately, the album doesn't particularly excel. It just succeeds at being well-rounded enough to get by. Only one track is particularly bad, and the latter half stands out much more than the prior half (Telescope is a total dud that sounds more boring than a Young Galaxy track), but it just doesn't break through in anything. Compared to Bon Iver which was 50% great and 50% terrible, CYOA is almost entirely "good" or "adequate".

GOOD

Both recs were a very pleasant listen, thanks s and Torts.
Final round score:
s / Torts - 7+

Torts' overall score is slightly higher, so he wins the tourney. s was really super close though.

Torts didn't bet on himself, so his overall drone is 15 albums. Those who placed a bet on Torts (Thomas, s, Darklands) won the mini-drone. Thomas placed his bet before the beginning of the first round, so his mini-drone is 10 albums, while s and Darklands can rec up to 7 albums.

Happy birthday to me. My parents organized me a party but I hate those things so I just sat at the dinner table quite embarassed. It's always awkward when people sing you songs and clap at you for no real reason.

Listened to the Mac DeMarco album I have in my calendar, pretty comfy stuff but I'm too lazy to review it so let's just say I liked it. Also I continued my tourney that no one remembers about (not even me). Tomorrow I'll post results of the first round.

>Louis Armstrong - Satchmo Plays King Oliver
Obviously good. Louis is a giant when it comes not only to playing the trumpet but also to singing and him switching between those offers much variety to the songs. The backing band is on point and the clear recording quality is a big plus. I also prefer his even deeper voice in here, compared to the hot 5s and 7s versions of some of the tracks, which can sound boyish at times.

New Order - Technique (1989)
>alternative dance, synthpop

Alternative dance is one of those genres I just hate with a passion for no real reason. Even when an artist I love, like Björk, does this genre (on Debut) it just comes off as shitty, generic alt. rock with some drum machines to get some pointless cred. This album as a whole is an exception, but there's a pretty obvious divide between the alternative dance tracks and the synthpop/acid house tracks, and the quality difference is noticeable as all hell. "Fine Time", "Round & Round", "Mr Disco", and "Vanishing Point" are all ultra-infectious, ultra-catchy synthpop tracks, with heavy disco and house influence just to add to the loveliness. They're essentially a continuation of the "Blue Monday" / "Bizarre Love Triangle" sound, which is by far the best sound New Order has to offer. The remaining tracks are much spottier, they still show that they can't really shake the sound of Joy Division and the influence of Ian Curtis, because Sumner's voice is still like a less passionate, higher imitation of Curtis', and the songs themselves are just neutered, synthy versions of Joy Division's brand of depressive post-punk. They're not terrible, mainly because Peter Hook's basslines are always a treat to listen to, they're just uninspired and take away from the inspired danciness the other half of the album has in spades.

Version 2.0
removed R.L. Burnside as his discog isn't very representative of country blues either, also he isn't really part of the original wave of bluesmen.
Now I'm wondering if Abner Jay is really essential. He's definitely Country Blues all the way through and a popular listen. But he only came to prominence in the 70's, and even then he's been an obscure figure til now.
thoughts?

Suni McGrath - Cornflower Suite (1969)
>american primitivism, contemporary folk

Definitely an extension of the sound Fahey was pioneering when he started shifting more towards long-form ragas, but not as compositionally interesting. McGrath obviously knows what makes a guitar piece good, but he doesn't have the same ear for melody that other primitivism guitarists have, making the pieces occasionally come off as stale, especially on a track like "Blue Domes of Isfaha" that almost completely throws away the primitivism sound for a simpler, electric guitar-driven sound. Despite this, the dude is an /incredible/ guitarist, his speed and technique could definitely rival Fahey's, and just because of that this album is great to listen to. The variety here is a nice touch as well, different instruments are experimented with and the brushed snare work on "Pea Plucker's Pavane" is an incredible touch. Don't expect something nearly on the level the big guns of primitivism, but if you like the style this is a wonderful listen.

3.0-

>>68262344
>Now I'm wondering if Abner Jay is really essential
yes, because he had such an idiosyncratic take on country blues. i think it's important to get that sort of variety.

good call on Burnside though, I love his Early Recordings but that's pretty much all he did with country blues.

Amon Duul II - Yeti

I’m a huge fan of Can, so I’m not sure why I put off listening to this for so long. It really is incredible. I can’t say I’ve heard anything else that utilizes modern and classic instrumentation in such a compelling way. All the sounds the band experiments with are crazy. It took me half the track to realize that the distorted sound in the main channel of Eye-Shaking King was a human.

The guitars and the ways the band explores them were definitely my favorite part of this record. Every track seemed to deliver a new way a guitar can sound and act. I do wish the band did a bit more on the vocal front, as the performances on Soap Shop Rock and Archangels Thunderbird were fantastic. Also, the bass lines all over this thing are top notch.

The improv tracks very interesting as well. It’s crazy that the band can compose something so cohesive through live improvisation. The three final songs of this LP are all very high-energy, but very psychedelic and easy to relax to. I will admit that one of my major cons of the record is how long these tracks meander, but I didn’t dislike it enough to hinder my listening experience. Everyone here has probably heard this thing but I highly recommend checking it out.

Babylon Whores - King Fear (1999)
>deathrock

I haven't the slighest clue what makes this "deathrock", to me it's just buttrock at it's cockiest. It's actually pretty decent at times, mainly in it's heavier, more oppressive moments (the first and last tracks are big highlights, the guitars sound great), but the vocals are dreadful, the songs are generic, and the basic sound is just bland metallic hard rock. The elements they add in to make the sound more gothic and spooky are incredibly gauche, a whooshy synth line doesn't automatically make a mainstream hard rock track become deathrock. The fact that I have a soft spot for heavy guitars (and the fact that they utilize heavy guitars somewhat well) is saving this from a 0.5, but trust me, it's pretty close.

2.0-

Jards Macalé - Jards Macalé (1972)
>MPB

The drumming on this album is extraordinary, my god. It's so tight and so complex, but it fits the songs perfectly. The songs themselves are pretty radical deconstructions of MPB, mainly with how damn sparse they are. Most tracks just feature guitars, vocals, and drums, and oftentimes the drums drop out to just let Macalé do his thing. I'm not a huge fan of Macalé's singer/songwriter songs, he's got somewhat of a weak voice on its own and the songwriting on these tracks is somewhat meandering, with the experimental ambitions sometimes taking over any discernible melodies, a melodic component something I definitely look for in this kind of music. But the more active tracks with the drummer, Macalé's smooth voice, /and/ his guitar playing? Really good stuff.

Your recs from yesterday were really good, lads

As far as Aesthetica goes, I still say it pales in comparison to the Ark work but was nice. Need to give that Spiritualized album more listens, was quite a long but pretty album. At the moment it's my opinion that it lacks diversity though, which made me barely even realise the album had already restarted over halfway before i finally stopped it
>>
>>68267328
i totally get it! they kinda just take that pretty, ethereal sound and just run with it.

Their third (and most popular) album, Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space, is a lot more diverse, with a whole lot of gospel and symphonic rock elements. and the title track is beautiful.

Kante - Zweilicht (2001)
>indie pop

Total let-down of an album. The first three tracks are incredible, frenetic, crisp, krautrock influenced indie pop songs, what could be better? "Die Summe der einzelnen Teile" is particularly a highlight, it's so dark and sinister while still retaining a poppy edge to it, and the motorik drum beat certainly doesn't hurt the quality. However, starting with "Best of Both Worlds", the quality of the album goes down pretty significantly. The first three tracks are pretty lengthy, but that's because they're so full of ideas, requiring a long running time in order to get all these ideas across. On these songs, every second is used to it's fullest potential. Conversely, the two songs running over ten minutes have and obscene amount of extra filler that could be cut, it's just so overlong and bloated as is. The back end isn't necessarily bad, just overlong, bloated, and not nearly as good as the extraordinary first half.

Touche Amoré - Stage Four
>post-hardcore

It opens with simple chords that hang in the air, drenched in emotion but hesitant, as if unsure how to begin the album. What follows over the next 33 minutes is a stream of consciousness, detailing singer Jeremy Bolm’s loss of his mother to cancer, and it is some of the most heart wrenching rock music I’ve heard in a long time.

Following in the thematic footsteps of Carrie And Lowell, Stage Four takes the listener through the hurricane of emotions that the death of a loved one causes; the regret of time that could have been spent together, the helplessness of trying to console someone while watching them “wither away”, and the ever-present, monolithicly blunt truth that the past can never be relived. This pain, chaotic with subjective emotion but centered around a sharp blade of objective truth, is reflected perfectly with the band’s sonic direction, which places beautifully melodic guitar riffs inside the shoegazey wall of sound and pounding drums provided by the other band members, topped off by Bolm’s passionate screams and grief laden lyrics.

(1/2)
>>
>>68270965
After the opener, “Flowers and You”, which describes a facade of stoic strength (‘A levee set for my heavy eyes’), the band takes this facade down and launches into the first piece of brutally honest lyricism on the album, “New Halloween”. Bolm describes his mixed emotions about where he was when his mother died (‘onstage, living the dream’, as explained in “Eight Seconds”). He regrets not being there the moment she passed, but attempts to reason that she’d be happy for him doing what he loved. I choke up every time I hear the chorus (“I tried to be your light / I did my best to shine”), proclaiming his desperate hope that his mother was proud of him.

Man, I don’t know. I don’t want to spend this whole review talking about the emotional impact that this album had on me, and I don’t want to make it seem like they shirk their musicianship to give the lyrics more priority. The performances on this album are dynamic and catchy, with (in my opinion) perfect production for post-hardcore resulting in a snappy bass tone and the blend of guitar noise and melody mentioned earlier.

Overall: a contender for my rock aoty. Combines ferocious and chaotic punk energy with tear-jerking lyrics and sharp melodies for an overall incredibly poignant study of loss and grief.

New week has been quite underwhelming after a strong debut:

>Osibisa • s/t (1971)
Fusion/Afrobeat by a London-based African band. I think their following releases are more interesting. Also great cover artworks by Roger Dean (flying elephants yayy)!

>Francis Bebey • Akwaaba - Music For Sanza (1985)
Eerie mood created by subtle rhytmns played on the sanza/kalimba (and some other traditional intruments/percussions). Too bad that the production is so minimal: when Francis Bebey (?) starts wailing, his voice is awfully saturated and ruins the track :/
The compilation 'African Electronic Music 1975-1982' is better (funny lyrics & cheap outsider synthpop).

>Joe Mensah • Cry Laughter (1975)
Decent Ghanaian mix of afrobeat (recorded in Lagos) and proto-highlife. Not as funky as it could be.

>Bola Sete • Shebaba (1971)
Jazz-funk nicely arranged: laid-back, with few covers (2 Beatles). Forgettable desu.

John Coltrane - A Love Supreme
Amazing record with amazing atmosphere, which will require several dozens of relistens to appreciate.

Coil - The Ape Of Naples
Probably my favorite album of theirs. I was leaning towards 8, but I honestly like every single song on this piece, so I think it's more of a 9 for me. Also having a personal nostalgic value for me (though maybe a lesser one than Horse Rotorvator, which basically opened experimental music for me some long time ago), I can't be indifferent or objective towards this thing.

Duster - Stratosphere
A very warm and comforting piece. I rated it 6 some while ago, changing my rate to 7. Great guitar, drums, etc, guess I am only feeling less affectionate about the vocals. Expressly slow tempo on "The Queen Of Hearts" is goat.

Sonic Youth - SYR 4: Goodbye 20th Century
Quite a lot of this is bullshit, some of it is REALLY not

Neko Case - Really bloody long title I can't be bothered
Pretty good, only really sets in at the song "Man" but the songwriting is really damn fine after that point, feelsy lyrics too

Wildildlife - Six (can't remember if I've already said a thing about it)
It's good though

Auktyon - something russian don't have my alphabet on me
It's pretty ok, there are some sections that drag but it bangs when it wants to

Axemen - Three Virgins, Three Versions, Three Visions (or some constituent version of that title)
This looked so promising, but left me sorely disappointed

Brevity is the soul of wit, but none of those were witty
