ah, those aren't for producing sounds. it's essentially just being used as a filter that is automated by the rise and fall of the LFO waves.

The sounds will come from oscillator modules. those sounds will then go into the voltage controlled filter.

i'll post a pic of my system once i get these in the case

I'm pretty into music but lately I've been really thinking about producing my own.
That said, I'm clueless about the technical aspects of music. I've looked at the sticky but there are 6 different guides for music theory and 6 different guides for MIDI/keyboards/whatever.
Can someone tell me where I should start? Should I just get a keyboard and a DAW and start goofing around and learn as I go?
Sorry for sounding stupid
>>
>>68237787
> is a ipad any good for production ?
Yes,

I still think some of the apps on the iPad are strongly underpriced compared with their pc/mac equivalent.
Some apps I use a lot on my iPad are as follows
>Borderlands. Great granular synth
>Korg iMS20 Gritty as fuck analogue synthesis, absolute steal at £20
>Korg iM1. Fantastic remake of the Korg M1 and for a few extra quid you can get all the expansion cards thrown in too
>Maschine 2. Great little sampler
>iMPC Pro. see above
>TouchOSC. touch controller.
>DM1. Nice drum machine with lots of vintage and classic kits included
>AUFX effects units. Very nice sounding delay and reverb plugins.
>Cubasis.

>>68237825
>But Apple's business model means that you'll be left with a useless paperweight in a few years that wont run any current apps.
It will run the apps that you have for it though? Isn't it just a case of not updating the apps or OS anymore? I think this is the case with most software on any platform really. sooner or later most software companies will discontinue support for their old products

Basically, you have no choice to, you're stuck with the last update compatible with the last OS you get.

Of course. The issue is the rate at which apple discontinues support of their earlier products.

Yeah the new one looks good too. A lot of people dismiss the iPad for production but I think personally that IF you have the money to start with then they are a decent way into production. My iPad is a 2nd Gen and I use it quite a bit for soft synths when I'm not in the studio. I'm guessing the new iPads are much more powerful and would be really handy for musicians and producers.

sure, just practice/learn the piano until you can play music that sounds like that youtube link, then record that as midi into the computer, then choose/make sounds that you like (you'll need to learn about synthesis and sound design overall if you want to make your own sounds, but it's not very hard, if you're creative) good luck sir, also the song you linked sounds great, it's just one piano chord and another weird instrument, but it is so good

Thank you very much for your input!
A lot of Akira Yamaoka's stuff is very simple, one or two chords, with droning or muted sounds looped over each other to create a feeling of numbness. I love that kind of thing.
I'm not well-versed on the technical aspects but I already take a lot of sound effects I find interesting and modulate them into things I find atmospheric, so I think I have the creativity covered.
Thanks again very much, now I'm set.

>>68239362
Reverberation and slight modulation
>>
>>68239362
you can sort of 'cheat' your way into creating an atmospheric feel by padding your track with soft noise, like in xtal, other than that just try the usual, pan your sounds around, double them up and pan them, have slowly modulating pads playing, chorus and reverbs could also help

Layer sounds/notes/chords over each other with slight upticks or downticks in pitch, with heavy reverberation this creates a very dreamy atmosphere.
>>
>>68240063
well as i'm sure you know, a basic LFO module will have one rate/speed/frequency knob and one depth/level knob, so with that in mind, a slight modulation as that anon is talking about, will probably mean that you turn the level/depth knob up a little bit, so the modulation level of the LFO isn't crazy strong or noticeable, this is just an example, an LFO isn't the only thing you can use to modulate other parameters

Completely new to music production.
What DAW is best? Is Fruity Loops actually any good or is that a meme?
Also, I am very curious- if you get a keyboard, are you able to map sounds to the keys, or is that a different instrument that does that? I have seen videos where people map sound effects to certain keys and play it, then turn the levels up or down. Can this be done with a typical keyboard or do I need a special one?
Sorry completely new to /prod/.

>>
>>68240309
Sounds like any other trap beat, be honest with yourself. Add some interesting modulation, take a more lax approach to the synth stabs.

Too generic, too upfront. See above, percussion and Ryhthym drive these types of tracks, do something creative.

and yea, you should be able to find a number of ways to map sounds to keys with each DAW, a lot of times things are like that in music production, there are a bunch of ways to do the same thing, and it's up to you to find your favorite

best advice is to start making music that don't require you to be good at any of those things, especially if your goal is just to get something made that was still influenced a lot by your own musical taste.

You don't have to be good at any of those things if you just put effort into making something you think sounds great.

I felt this but then I just tried really hard to make it exactly how I wanted it to sound and if you can't do that then maybe focus more on your concept first. Hi /prod/, newer producer here.

What do you all do to recreate the sound of tape recorders or get a purposely lo-fi sound?

Currently in Ableton I've been using an FX rack with some an EQ with a good range of mids carved out, some vinyl distortion with minimal amounts of crackle, a short filter delay and repitched simple delay assigned to a marco knob to make cool lil pitch changes. This has been OKAY but I'm wondering if there are any alternatives that don't investing in a tape deck.

Try the toneboosters Ferox plugin
>>
>>68247403
-EQ everything under 400-500, dont cut, but reduce alot, (like 5-15 db depending)
-EQ everything above 10khz - 13khz (depending on how degraded you want it to sound)
-Smash it into a low quality limiter, a limiter that isnt as transparent as other high quality limiters.
-Alternatively, find a tape saturation plugin and smash it into that or both, experiment, find your sound. (google tape saturation plugins)
-Add some nice tape hiss on top (optional)

>>
>>68251540
I don't think that's a very good idea. I prefer female vocals anyways.
>>
>>68251664
Genuinely no, they're bad. Here is why:

le sidechained to kick
stereotypical snare roll build up
the snares that hit after the synth with the annoyingly long attack are mixed TERRIBLY

the vocals sound totally off

the drums have no impact, and stereo widened terribly

2nd one:

starts off much better, desu, but the tuned down vocal sample is terribly derivative and just makes me wanna shut it off right there, nothing interesting.

drums are boxxy, snare hasnt really any impact would increase the mids

but yes this is much better than the first, still not good though

then again I have a bias against this type of edm shit so whatever

It's a great synth but any 2 or 3 VCO monosynth is going to go a lot further than it. The oscillator sections and filter modes are pretty sweet, but they still don't compare to having seperate pitches and a classic Moog filter.

Honestly, I would have been happy if Arturia made a odyssey like mono/duo synth with 2 VCOs and their own filter, but their only options are 1 VCO or that wannabe Minimoog monstrosity.

shitons of producers use omnisphere presets
no one cares
the sample library is the point of omnisphere
>>
>>68254707
I can see it as normal for instrument presets, but I especially feel weird when I just pick some sample from one of the soundscape libraries and play a single note while letting it do everything for me.

I don't know, I'm just not a sample guy, I just think of composers and how they had/have to think how to achieve certain sounds through instruments they have at a disposal and then here I am, clicking a button and having an ambient noise with light drums and strings and what not let it do it for me.

I may have had listened to too much shit about using presets in general, either here (major lazer being the biggest meme) or somewhere else on the internet and now I feel bad if I don't make it from scratch - even don't really wanna use noise sweeps because of that.

In general I think that everything I make sounds like a pile of dog shit. I even got told multiple times that people hate my sounds when I used high quality libraries - either I'm horrible at choosing something pleasable, or I manage to ruin them.

I mean, just look at clyps 2, 3 and 4 on this post:
>>68237729

I spent like 20 hours on that electric guitar with strings fighting with mix and it still doesn't sound good. "Virtuoso" shit has incredibely bad sound now when I'm listening to it and in general things always gets muddy, even when I do all the stuff people keep repeating to me (EQ, panning, compression, creating space blah blah).

Oh and btw, check out these cancers. I spent so much time trying to fix it but I just can't.

https://clyp.it/kt1hjf0i
https://clyp.it/o5hb4yj0

>>68262707
just like in standard mixing boards, effects are applied per channel, so no way around that.

But you can apply all of the effects you want, freeze the track, and drag that clip to a new audio track. That will give you a clip with the effect permanently applied.

Automate the effect's on/off status while the clip is playing - since Live v9 that can be done within Session View as well as in Arrangement View.

In my experience, if you are a trust fundy shite who can afford to practice your art for years on end, then that is how you get talented. Most people can't afford to sink all their time into this. It's ez to do laze about and just spend money on gear. Harder to actually use it

audio processors can be all kinds of things
equalizers, compressors, reverbs, modulation effects, analog ones and digital ones, anything that processes audio
if it's useful depends totally on if it fits your workflow and even more if you have the i/o capabilities in your setup to be able to experiment it
chances are that if you're new to the whole thing you're way better off with using the readily available digital versions of whatever that processor might do inside your DAW and expand your knowledge that way first

Just finished the Kontakt manual, fucking hell the zone envelopes are so dope

https://clyp.it/graw12ff

the first few seconds are the raw break followed by the one mangled by zone envelopes

it slices the drum into individual hits and then you can draw automations for anything per hit - this is just the sample speed, pitch and SSL type shelves

it's not unpredictable either you can really tweak it to what you want

Keys are way too small and feel low quality. I have one and it's more or less useless to me because of the keys. Do not recommend.

Here's another fun thing you can try with breaks in Kontakt.
Chop all the hits into individual zones and map them to the keyboard. Separate kicks, hihats, snares into octaves in the mapping editor.
Now- create a few groups. In Kontakt, you can think of a group as a page of settings. MODULATION, envelopes, etc, all for whatever zones you add to a particular group.

So what you can do is, throw your kicks in group one, your snares in group two, hihats in group three for example.

Now, you can apply envelopes / different modulation to each group / samples separately.

Beyond that, each group can have its own output to the host (also midi channel- useful for building multi layered synthy type patches)- if you are using kontakt in multi-channel output mode.

You may find it useful to have a dummy instance of kontakt that has multichannel output setup already to the host, an empty instrument filled with groups, each one pointing to those different outputs. This can be your 'drum chopping / percussion' kontakt instance. You can name your groups / set their outputs so when you add a snare to group 5, you know it outputs to channel 5 in your host.

Even if Kontakt didn't have outstanding 3rd party libraries, then it would be worth the price of admission as a sample manipulation tool. It has excellent modulation, envelopes, filters, even just using your own sounds in there is worth it. Editing in this manner cannot be done in the free version.

oh yeah i always the use the multiouts, i still haven't got round to learning how to make a multichannel setup the default project because im still learning ableton
>>
>>68270360
It sucks to, because you have to fiddle around with Kontakt's outputs tab- but once you do it you can save an output preset (in the outputs tab). At this point my logic autoload is just a sea of multichannel kontakt instances, already setup. Some are setup as described above, with groups for easy routing with perc in mind, some are just setup with the outputs & no instruments loaded.

you could post a better sampler

In Ableton preferences go to the File/Folder tab and click "Save current set as default".

>save a synth preset in fxb
>load it
>tweak it but dont hit save
>load it up later and its changed from where i tweaked it, like its autosaved

how do i stop this autosave fxb shit, i lost a good patch

this is in ableton btw
>>
>>68270806
nvm i figured it out

it was synclavier V carrying oversampling/bitrates between patches

tripfagnottripfag here
this shit is waaaayyyyyy out of my comfort zone

and I don't know if I'm doing this right honestly halp.

this is nitpicky stuff its not bad:

sounds like a tape emulator on the master buss, i'd try a different setting cuz it sounds too flangey for my liking

and the kicks especially the 2nd louder ones are phasey like there's two layered phase canceling maybe? and i dont like the saturation/transients or whatever it sounds nobbly

I don't like the drum processing, mainly the snare, i like the rhodes

exactly

exacly

good ear anon foreal. I'll be tweaking the mixing and master stuff, I was trying to give it that bite (hard to do without clipping). The phasey 2nd kick shityness is intentional it's actually not even in the same key. That's what I mean by idk if im doing this right

make them keys tremolo and you got you some money

This was something Tycho said on gearslutz about his process:
"Usually a couple EQs at different points in the chain, one with more color (like the Waves API 550A or PSP Console Q in SAT mode) for additive stuff and character, and then
one towards the end for the surgical mixing stuff -- I use Equality and Waves REQ for that.

I take the same approach to compression; something warm with nice distortion (like Softtube FET or CL 1B) that I'll drive pretty hard,
open up the tails with fast attack/slow release, and run parallel to blend (which is stock in Reaper via the FX mix parameter). Then I'll do more transparent mix type compression later to wrap up the whole thing.

Here and there in the chain I'll have any combination of distortion, bit reduction, delay, reverb, etc. For drums I typically use D16 Devastor, SP Sonitex, Echoboy,
and Lexicon Native Plate. I then bus a lot of it to a master drums bus and do a little more comp/eq to glue it up.

Really the big thing though is layering. 4 snares, 3 kicks, multiple shaker, high hat, breaks; all swirling around timing-wise with a lot of heavy EQ / HPF stuff
going on to make it all mesh. Use complementary sounds in combination; if you have a nice airy acoustic kick, scoop a little out of the low end and slip a tape saturated 808 kick in there pitched to taste.

I guess my overall goal with a mix is to saturate the spectrum so that all available frequency ranges are being maximized without stepping on each other's toes and percussion is so dynamic that it can fill
in all those gaps your tonal content is leaving resulting in a more dense sound.

Of course you have to be careful as things can get muddy quick. I work with a mix engineer (Count/Mikael Eldridge) who does wonders carving a space out for everything and cleaning my usually pretty messy mixes up."

dont know if that helps

(cont.)

he uses devastor on the drums which a lot of people with a low fi sound use for subtle bitcrushing, his sound isnt really like the clip you posted which is more like flying lotus/burial but i know that you can get closer to that sound using subtle bitcrushing

wait no im thinking of decimort

anyway yeah try using decimort and that sonitex thing
