so where do you go to find a musician?

i need a lead guitar player, a few years ago I would post on craigslist but is there a better site for this now? in a major city BTW

bascially I want a lead guitar player who can contribute 100/m toward a band space who can travel for gigs twice a month

any leads /gg/?

Shit, I'm totally down but I'm in Chicago. I had all my Reverb, delay, chorus and fuzzes all lined up too
>>
>>68228710

I'm doing that right now.

I've got a really nice luthier made classical guitar that I haven't used in like 5 years.

I've come to the decision that it is better to have someone get some use out of it rather than it sit in a cupboard.
>>
>>68232117
That's honestly not that bad. I don't think those riffs go together though, too much of a tempo change. Gotta work on timing with your leads too.

Sell it, it'll sting for a couple of months but your new minimal setup will erase all the memories of old. I used to have 12 guitars at one point and now I've downgraded to these two, a MiM 50s Strat, and a Gibson V and the Stangs satisfy my offset lust and the V fufills my Humbucker/heavy needs. The Strat is timeless though, it was my first Fender and I'll have it till the end, I'm about to upgrade the pickups to more surf orientated sound.
>>
What guitars do you solid body guitar would you recommend that is cheap, can sound great for a rock-based sound and a jazz-based sound? I was thinking of getting a telecaster or a jazzmaster since I'm not very educated in this area.

Definitely an HH Telecaster. Jazzmasters would be good but the P90s are different. Also look into a 12" radius fretboard if you can, the more space there is, the easier it is. Also budget?
>>
>>68232279
Go for it then, I don't see any negatives. I have a cab I sold to my bandmate that I get to still use weekly, and a couple guitars I sold to my friend and Cousin whom I'm able to play with when we jam
>>

>>

It sounds like you've mic'ed up a 4" speaker put in a plastic garbage can. That's what I mean with sounds bad.
>>
>>68232280
Probably around the 400$ range, if I can find used for cheaper on craigslist or something then I'll consider that too.
>>
>>68232222
I also might even consider a mustang as well if the sound is right.
>>
>>68232466
Nah as a mustang owner I wouldn't suggest It. Bad for that heavy rock sound you're after and the 25.5" neck length would be beneficial on the Tele and JM. But I might add those new 2016-17 Fender Mustangs/Duo Sonics with P90s and Humbuckers seen promising for $450 new

Tbqhwyrnf the HH Telecaster I owned was the perfect Shoegaze ambient machine. Humbuckers give that nice and flat clean sound that's very present. Since you also want your guitar to pop I'd suggest that Blacktop Jazzmaster or a Squier VM Jazzmaster and upgrade to those Curtis Novak JM pickups.
Still you could also make a statement and assemble your own HH Tele as well. If you wanna get really wild I'd say you should get a Marauder, hell maybe even a Fender Pawn Shop 72' in surf green that Semihollow is a bonus
>>
>>68232222
telecaster is a little too twangy for jazz imo.

i'd probably recommend an hss strat. lots of jazz uses that thick creamy humbucker tone, and you can throw it out of phase with a single coil in there to spice it up a bit.

ok so this is all news to me

any time anybody asks "whats the difference between a strat and a tele" the only thing anybody ever says is that the tele is a twangy country sound.

i got my tele just because i already have an lp and didnt like the hum the strat made with my amp, and the tele doesnt seem to make that annoying noise. plus i wanted some crunchy rhythm tones and it does that job ok.
>>
>>68232832
Tele twang comes from the bridge pickup. Jazz (at least "straightahead" jazz) is all neck pickup only.
>>
>>68232673
These options look pretty promising, a little over the price range but I can probably manage a way.

2 questions

1) when i have my hands off my strings i can hear an ever so slight buzzing from my amp, im pretty sure its a grounding issue? what do i need to do to fix this?

2) when my switch that changes the sound slightly is on the lower most setting it buzzes from the amp
>>
>>68233129
strat? 60 cycle hum. you can buy single coil 'noiseless pickups' that fix it.

teles dont seem to have that problem even though they are also single coil i think

>>
>>68233518
if youre just starting out with music i'd highly recommend some lessons, but it's never too late to learn.

one advantage of starting when youre older is you have more discipline, so put in the time to learn the right way (ie learn to read music + study music theory rather than learning riffs and 'shapes' like every other pleb)
>>
>>68233564
The only problem is I have no clue what to search for in equipment.
Maybe an electro-acoustic to be able to play a wider variety of stuff?
>>
>>68233582
electric guitars are actually easier to play than acoustics, but a lot of noobs get too focused on 'gear' and 'tone' that they neglect actually learning to play well. thats one of the main reasons people say learn acoustic first, because it's simpler to use and you can just focus on rhythm and chords, etc.

you can get natural tones out of a solid body electric, but you need special effects to replicate the ringing harmony of an acoustic.

hollowbody electrics are pretty niche, and acoustic-electrics are kinda silly imo.

look for guitars made in quebec if you want decent stuff that isnt too expensive. anything under the Godin umbrella is pretty decent.

Only own a Squier Affinity Strat so far and it's my fav strat to play overall
Usually play rosewood fingerboards - how different does Maple feel?
>>
>>68233478
I started 3 months ago at 23. I'm definitely improving and can read music and sightread pretty well. I'm never going to be Hendrix, but I probably never had the potential anyway.
>>
Does anyone has experience with Kiesel guitars?
>>
>>68233742
This is one. It has the hollow body of the acoustic, but also those weird buttons on the side.
>>
>>68233754
depends on the finish. rosewood boards are usually raw (for the most part) so sometimes they can feel really dry and smooth, whereas maples can be laquered and feel a bit glossier.

my rule with instruments is try before you buy. idk about your prices there but mim strats are fine instruments
>>
>>68233758
Good to know.
I guess that will do to me too.
I mainly want something new to spend time on.
Get my mind off shitty things in life, learn to play the melancholic folkish bits of songs I like when I get the feels.
You know what I'm saying?
>>
>>68233800
o yea

im sure it's fine but it's not somethign i would buy. better to just look for a higher quality acoustic than to spend extra money for something with a silly pickup in it.
>>
>>68233754
A MIM Strat would be a sensible upgrade from your Squier but you can probably find one cheaper. I don't know what guitar prices are like in Germany but here in the US the market is totally flooded with MIM Strats and they usually sell for about $250.
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9N2mL2gAaw
>>
>>68233836
I see. Is something up to the 200 price range ok for an acoustic then?

It's a bit late, but here's my own interpretation of the tab I wrote from a few days ago:

https://clyp.it/zpkweyix

I originally envisioned it as a slow acoustic riff almost exactly how that one anon played it, so I tried to give it a different twist here. I took out the harmonics in the last bit and changed it to a little scale thing to make it flow better as a repeating riff. Then I separated the chord progression and raised the lead notes an octave, and had a nice wank to finish it off
>>
If I follow through with the beginner and intermediate courses on justinguitar, will that give me a solid foundation to just go off and learn whatever song I like?
I really like fingerstyle more than anything but I feel like I'm not progressing or learning because I don't have structure or something to tell that me that I am learning.
>>
>>68233884
yea, i'd recommend going to the used market.

seagull s6 is a great guitar and is pretty affordable.
>>
>>68233146

>>
>>68233973

Need a good pedal board for 6 'normal' sized pedals and 2 wah/volume sized pedals. Is pedaltrain the best option out there for the money?

I've never been a fan but they're OK for the price. Depending on the type of music you play, there are many options. Considering you have an Epi LP, I'd recommend looking at LTDs or even Ibanez Arts or something like the Zach Myers SE (though play every SE in person, they're not always great)

Few questions /gg/:
I'm getting seymour duncan pickups, pair of humbuckers for my first guitar (which needs electrical work). How much should I expect for a repair, installation of the pickups, replacing the tuners (I provide the hardware), and strings (also provided), and a pickguard (provided by them)?

Another question:
Best scales to practice for jazz guitar and general jamming? Finger speed exercises would be a huge help I'm as slow as a turtle.
>>
Does anyone have a decent purple haze tab the one on ultimate guitar is fucking garbage.
>>
>>68241119

>>
>>68241207
Yeah I guess I shouldn't be so lazy. Thats just extra cash burned. Shame on me. Been really tired with classes and work but it shouldn't take more than ten minutes out of my day.

Would appreciate an estimate though. I live in northern NJ. Hoping it wont be $100+.

And forget the pickguard I can do that too. Forget restringing I can also do that. So just the electrical.

Here's something I've been wondering about lately. How important are physical aspects of your hands for playing guitar well? I mean things like size, shape, or length of fingers or the palm. I've noticed that a lot of the "greatest ever" guitarists, especially the shreddy ones, all seem to have really thin/long fingers. I assume that should really help out getting the wider scales and shit, and make it generally easier to play guitar, right?

If you feel like you're stuck with no progress, consider playing with other people of similar skill. Just get together and jam with whatever the fuck comes to your mind. And slowly make your parts more complex as you go in order to learn. Structured lessons are good and all, and Justing certainly provides some good foundations, but they're not the only thing you should focus on, or else you might just burn out and lose interest.

Also, if you just want to learn a song, you can do that from tabs with absolutely zero courses taken. Just look up how to read tabs and you're good to go. It's gonna be slow, and often frustrating, but if you just really want to learn a particular song or two, go right for it.

What is the most meme pedal company and why is it Zvex?

I'll probably go up to or around 2K on one. I've wanted one since I was 15, so I don't care about the price really, but I'm not gonna try to get a super expensive vintage version or anything

Not JHs where they just copy popular pedals and rename and house them

On the topic of wee little instruments, I played a Kala u-bass ukelele (acoustic) at music store recently and fell in love with it. It sounds really cool. May buy one in future. qt as fuck also and comes in solid body versions as well.

Was wondering that too. It's a good exercise to try the parts without the cd but if you get stuck somewhere, it's useful to have.

So /gg/, is link related generally accepted as fact and considered sound practice?

TLDR; the secret to good tone is, apparently, bracketing every effect with an eq pedal and throwing one in the loop as well. Also, power attenuators. The article goes on to state that things like pickup swaps and habitual amp shopping should be your last resort in the quest for tone.

So, this is to say with eq tweaking my shrill Duncan Designed pickups can be turned into something serviceable? And that we could essentially "model" each other's guitar pickups using a frequency analyzer and equalization?

all you need are good pickups and good eq.
>>
>>68245060

I mostly agree with the sentiment. If you don't have an eq pedal and maybe something like a compressor (and whatever else that may tweak sound to your taste) to mess with, you shouldn't necessarily jump straight to shopping for a brand new amp before trying those.

...unless your amp is super cheap trash in the first place.
>>
>>68245060
>shrill Duncan Designed
They probably have ceramic magnets. If height adjustment isn't getting you the tone you want you should try pulling the magnet and replacing it with an alnico magnet. That's your cheapest option.
>>
>>68245060
power attenuators arent fun to buy

buy three of these and series/parallel them with your speaker. Now your amp is 1/4 the power for four bucks.

Anon with cheap bass who broke his nut last week here. Planning a couple of upgrades as long as I'm working on it. Gonna switch the wiring up a little, with P-bass volumes but master treble and bass contours.

It sounds pretty close to a midi bass. Would be fun to jam with but you'll have to crank it up to get any body.

Nice! Glad to see cool bass is getting some love (and that it's been cleaned lol).

Gotta get me a cheap P/J at some pt. Don't think I can hold out as long as it will take me to save for a vintage Streamer

Whoa. What are those two on the far left? Especially the second on in, that headstock looks fucking rad.
>>
>>68245267
This is pretty basic music theory stuff. Unfortunately simply changing the bass by itself isn't always enough to sound good. It's very easy for it to sound like the wrong note. Like in his C major to A minor7 example it instead sounds like he should be playing a G instead for it to be an inverted chord. What you need is another line to strengthen that A note, such is one in the piano or guitar, or even the singer's voice.

On the last 2 or 3 frets my strings are basically flat on the frets. Meaning they just slap against them and can't be played. Do I absolutely need to raise the action? Is it a neck issue (I have minimal neck relief, less than a credit card thick) or is it the last few frets that need levelling? I'm just confused because those last few frets are literally on the neck pocket thing on the neck, so I'm not sure if adjusting neck relief will actually do something.
>>
>>68247077
Also, the highest and the lowest strings are totally fine, it's only the strings in the middle. Does anyone have experience with that specific issue?
>>
What are some good picking hand exercises? I'm already practicing to a metronome very slowly with any rhythm I can think of. Wondering if anyone knows interesting ones. Especially picking between two strings.

Taylor GS Mini for $350 on craigslist. Yes?
>>
Its been a year since I got my 1962 strat. The string when I bought it were new. Is it time to change strings again? Im not sure how frequently I should change them. Also wondering if I should take it to a pro shop to get thr string change done. I can change strings myself but arent the best at it. Given its an expensive guitar should I leave the string changing to a professional luthier?
>>
>>68248210
i hope this is satire
>>

I have one. Amazing guitar, sound and quality is top notch. Great to take on vacations too since they arent huge. $350 is a steal, I got mine for $1200 (aud)

No? Would like an honest answer
>>
>>68248210
>should I leave the string changing to a professional luthier?
Not only this, anon. Any kind of intervention on a guitar must be performed by a qualified profesional, both for yours and your instrument's safety. Your local luthier will be more than happy to help you for a fair price, just take it to him.
>>
>>68248256
>bought a '62 Strat and doesn't know when to change his strings.

It's a pretty simple process, but a little more tricky on those old guitars. First you have to remove the headstock (with a knife or saw). The holes for the strings to come through should already be there so once you get it removed (It just slides right back on) You'll be able to get it from there.
>>
>>68244554
I would say EHX
>>
>>68245060
First of all, tone is in the fingers.
Second of all, the word isn't "tone," it is "timbre."
Third, yes, you can mimic a particular frequency shape with an analyzer and eq, multieffects, etc, but when you begin to dynamically manipulate a static tone, the timbre gets much more complex to pin down, since it now has acceleration, volume, etc.
>>
>>68248328
This Anon, changing strings properly is extremely difficult to master. Don't trust a luthier that charges less than $250 for it. They'll just fuck it up and possibly ruin your guitar (It's VERY easy to do this on a strat when changing strings)
>>
What do you think about Ibanez bass guitars? I'm thinking about getting a roadstar 2 or something but idk if I would be satisfied.

Well, the Chinese J pickup (and cavity) has the mounting screws in a different location than DiMarzio has 'em. Is it chisel time, or don't replace the bridge pup time?

It's router time. You have no idea if there's knotholes or splits or fucking filler under the paint. You don't want to split the shit in half with a chisel.
>>
>>68248742

if theyre the same length why not just use the chinese cover
>>
>>68248795
The Chinese cover doesn't have the holes exposing the pole pieces, and the DiMarzio is glued pretty snugly.
>>68248775
I don't have a router, but I have a rasp. Maybe I can get it in there.

The one with the dragon headstock is a 3 stringed dulcimer type Thai instrument called a Phin. As far as I know they're all hand built and they all have dragon headstocks. Got mine for $20 from a an old hoarder lady, she thought it was a Walmart toy. Being a dulcimer type instrument the frets have diatonic spacing, meaning they're physically spaced out to the notes of a scale (I've read that most Phins are made by ear and don't follow traditional scales), you can't play them wrong, they are tuned to a key and every note you fret is in that key. Very fun and very easy to play.

This is what mine sounds like:
https://soundcloud.com/epoch6/echo-lake
>>
>>68249362
The other one is a Seagull Merlin, another dulcimer type instrument. Where the 3rd string would typically sit they've put 2 strings spaced close together like a 12 string. Also diatonically spaced, sounds similar to the Phin but with a much brighter and happier scale. Tons of videos of them on YouTube, they retail for $100 - $125 most of the time. Easy, cheap, and fun. Both are great campfire instruments.

Rasp didn't fit. Using a pen knife to whittle at the edges of the cavity.
