Can someone explain the appeal of collecting cassette? I already collect vinyl, so I understand the importance of having physical media. But why cassette? Isn't it worse sound quality than anything else? Do you carry around boomboxes to play them on? Not trying to insult any cassette collecters, just genuinely curious.

Tapes can actually sound really good.
There is a reason many artists only record analog tape masters.

This question is word by word asked in every single cassette thread but I'll post anyway.

Cassettes are simply something that simply promotes a local music scene. Local bands don't have money to press vinyl, so cassettes are a really good option for people who are wanting to do a physical release, but don't have the expenses to do vinyl. Local tape labels put out local bands who then have local shows and the cycle continues, showing other people in that scene that making music and putting it out is actually an attainable option. Some people don't live in cities/don't actively participate in a local scene, and just don't understand this dynamic. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

In terms of sounds quality, the whole "dude tapes sounds bad lmao" argument is kind of invalid because because see tapes as a cheap novelty, and don't play them properly. Yeah, of course a tape played on some walkman from the thrift store or played in your car from 1993 is going to sound bad. Just like playing a vinyl record on a crosley. If you have nice gear and make an effort to keep your stuff somewhat nice, tapes will last just as long if not longer than a record would.

Badass stuff OP, where did you get these from? I went to a show over the weekend and got some tapes from a homie in town who puts a few releases under burger, and got a tape from a touring band from Arizona.

So are you basically saying that there's no point in collecting tapes if they aren't local bands?

My local scene kinda sucks desu. Otherwise I'd definitely start collecting cassetes.
>>
>>68228455
I mean, if you like buying tapes then yeah there is a point in it. I would rather spend $5 on a tape that I sorta like rather than a $25 record that I sorta like. It is less of a financial commitment to check out music you aren't super familiar with.

>My local scene kinda sucks desu
im sure you can barely name 10 musician from where you are. its very rare for a scene to be one and one thing, expect if you live in a rural shithole or a 3rd world country(but even they have diverse scenes).
>>
>>68228562
You're right, I probably can't name 10 bands. I stopped looking after noticing that all of them were either classic rock cover bands, or indie folk/rock bands that sound exactly like every other indie folk/rock band. I live in a medium sized city full of super conservatives. Maybe this is my fault, but I mostly listen to hip-hop and jazz, which there seems to be none here.

Even the one record store in town is heavily skewed to only carrying rock albums. They just recently started having any hip hop in stock.

What city are you from?

Does modern cassette releases feature Dolby or Dolby-like noise reduction, or they don't need those?

Grabbed from shows, friends releases, randomly spend 20 bucks if I got it at some distro like hells headbangers or fallen empire. Used to have way more than the pic but when my car got wrecked I didn't even think to grab them.
