Screaming Trees - Sweet Oblivion, Dust
Temple of the Dog - s/t
Mudhoney - Superfuzz Bigmuff

L7 - Bricks are Heavy
The Afghan Whigs - Gentlemen
Mad Season - Above
These are pretty much the essentials. There were hundreds of other great releases beyond just these, though.

Soundgarden, Afghan Whigs, Temple of the Dog, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Mad Season, Nirvana.
And then Smashing Pumpkins and Sunny Day Real Estate because they are the next logical steps from grunge/are pretty great to listen to this time of year.

I bought In Utero on cassette yesterday and listened to it
I like Nirvana now

Soundgarden and Nirvana are probably the two best bands to introduce yourself to grunge with. Start out with Soundgarden's big releases and then go all the way back to the Eps, it's all good. Alice In Chains is a good beginner band too. Then slowly pick off bands that everyone else has named and get into them.
Avoid pearl jam though, they're fairly shit

Cassettes are unironically the best medium for grunge, emo, and metal

It's much better than most other stuff labeled as grunge though
Is Sex and Candy by Marcy Playground considered grunge? I love that song, want more like it.
