Lou Reed is a great rhythm guitar player. He has his own unique style, with very unusual patterns and upstrokes:

The ways in which he is able to get so much out of two or three chords is amazing, especially its emotional impact.

Regarding his lead guitar, it's also very unique, unlike anything else. Weird pauses, exploiting very few notes. You immediately recognise when he's playing:

Sister Ray is just one example of what Lou Reed is able to with the guitar. Incredibly skilled, agressive, powerful, revolutionary.

What's crucial is that Lou Reed has mastered delivery - how he combines voice (and words) with music (among which the guitar) is absolutely unprecedented.
I'll admit that at first sight it seems that he lacks guitar skills - which is definitely true if you judge him by technique, how fast he is able to play, actually if you judge him based on every dominant standard -, but he is able to greatly contribute to songs in other ways. Same goes for his singing.

It's silly to just post a few songs that are supposed to 'capture' his guitar skills, because it will never work, but I tried my best. I guess it's necessary to know his body of work inside out, and his music certainly invites you to do that, to create a very strong bond with the listener - it's rewarding. That being said, almost every album has terrible songs on it, and some albums are complete trash.

Any average gypsy guitarist is on level with some of the best contemporary guitarists you see today. Literally, i saw one gypy, who is nobody and had technique better than satch, gilbert or any other "guitar god". The fact that they do this on acoutic makes it even more impresive.
