>a little math
I think discogs warped your idea of what is math rock. By the by, I have to mention how math rock isn't a genre you should actively be mining, since math rock describes a way of playing rather than a fixed sound, so there's little chance you will find albums similar to your favourite math rock albums by looking for more math rock records.

Also, Wrong isn't math but it's NoMeansNo's best, if the lack of math bothers you then you're listening to it incorrectly.

Anyway, since you seem to dislike all good "math rock", maybe you should try the things I don't care for. These bands include BATS, Hella, Battles, and U.S. Maple (kinda similar to Oxbow except I don't like U.S. Maple too much but maybe you will). Also, listen to Rodan if you're looking for Spiderland but not nearly as good.

confirmed for not listening to the albums he rates
>>
>>61579841

I've realized that discogs has sometimes been dead wrong with categorizing something, so when I post something to listen to, it's not that I believe it belongs in that genre/subgenre. I also understand that mathrock is kind of a sloppy term like EDM, but it's what's helped me to find things that DO sound different than what I've heard before, so I'm only going off what helps.

I didn't mean to send the impression that I was dismissing an album because it wasn't what I was expecting. Yank Crime is a decent album, there's nothing really "wrong" with it, I want to stress that.

let's update this shall we?

>Michael Gira - The Milk of M Gira

How Much Gira is too much Gira?
I think that Gira needs a band with him, or at least someone with whom he can bounce Ideas off, preferably with access to more than a guitar and a kick-drum.
It's jarring, I'm used to hearing Gira sing against maximalist soundscapes, not just a guitar; there's no reprieve from his intensity, which I learnt through listening to this becomes stale after 5 tracks or so. It is very interesting seeing the threads of songs that he reassembled into later Swans recordings though.

>Panopticon - Roads to the North

This was pretty bad, the bluegrass/trad folk feels really shoehorned in there, like they went to the markets and picked up panpipes or some shit and brought it into the studio to mess around with, and one dude in the band thought it was a good idea so the rest just went along with it...
On top of that, the Black meal isn't really that great either, it's confused, trying to be super furious guise but also atmoshit, nothing is new here, everything feels either dated or out of place
This Album is trying to land a headshot from a kilometer with a shotgun, too much is here, it's overproduced and too dense
disappointed

it was nice to say the least, fun at parts but just not very interesting.

>Watkin Tudor Jones - Memoirs of a Clone
>recc by Nyarlathotep
south african hip hop turned out to be pretty neat. the first two thirds of the album were pretty mediocre, but when the title track kicks in, shit starts getting pretty good. that 4 song streak from Memoirs of a Clone to It's All Over was really fun, but he kinda ruins it with the last song. there were some short skits between a few of the songs,
which at first were kind of annoying but towards the end i found them to be a little charming.

i'm glad you came to like the skits. the Ziggurat, which I am woefully up against this round, is a sci-fi concept album with a lot of story and skits, and he does different voices like on memoirs- it's a little like being read a book as a child.

Somebody in this thread knows me well, because I liked SIX of the fourteen tracks on that Melt-Banana album, favorite being "Chipped Zoo On The Wall, Wastes In The Sky...".

Now, discogs *claims* this one to be mathrock, lounge (!), funk metal, AND avante-garde jazz. If that's true, I have a feeling this is going to be really fuckin cool. Whoever categorized this better have been right this time, because my hopes are up.

Did you think I made a blog, uploaded Musical Abortions as that album, somehow edited the metadata so it shows that I did all that back in 2012, then recommended it knowing that that's the only valid search result that's going to pop up so you'll listen to Dead thinking it's dank trad? Because that's something I'd totally do if I had the time and the knowhow.

Okay I actually took a break then started listening to this Eskimo album.

Still waiting for the funk metal to kick in, if anywhere, but it's fun so far! The important thing is that it doesn't sound like shitty ska or, god forbid, the swing revival. The lounge and avant-garde is definitely front and center.

>They Might Be Giants - Lincoln

Wew lads this is aboslutely most heinous. This album sounds like it was entirely recorded and mixed on a Speak & Spell. Seriously, the instrument tones here made me want to gouge my ear drums and the entirety of my auditory cortecis out.

Albums very rarely make me physically wretch from musical decisions made therein, but I was practically dry heaving from wall to wall of this shit. The music constantly breaks into completely incomprehensible randomness, with absolutely no care taken to build any semblance of musical sense. Shit just happens. This is the least musical album I have ever heard. There is no development, no care taken to build interesting structures, even the hooks feel at best like being repeatedly bludgeoned in the back of the head with a wiffle bat.

This album nearly drove me to misanthropy.

2/10

Weird Al Yankovic except without the wit.

Violent Femmes except without the charm or talent.

Good music except without the good.

Bad music except without the music.

Fuck.

Sometimes the subtleties of noise and free jazz are sometimes completely lost on me. In this case they were not. The album starts with the slow build of noise, a repeated bass strum, and some drum cymbals that slowly roll in like a thunderstorm lead by some very enjoyable saxophone wankery. After it peaks, the instrumentation slowly disappears and slows until there's just a small amount of quiet feedback and guitar noises. These sounds come in and out of focus and are joined by saxophone and possibly the guitar. One of the reasons I really enjoyed this album is because the distinction between one instrument and another is frequently blurred. Eventually the saxophone, drums, bass, and guitar come back, tamer than before, while the noise slowly takes on the sound of water. From here the sense of tension slowly fades until there’s a period of just guitar and noise, and then all the instruments come back in full force over an intense guitar groove. Finally, it turns into Merzbow’s classic harsh noise with Sakata yelling over it. I think the album went on a little long, but the interplay between the different instruments and the seamless transitions from one idea to another were wonderful and I would definitely recommend checking it out. Give it a listen, it's got two great meme musicians on it.

>noise

I like this, it's a harsh wall of noise that's just oppressive and intimidating with its rather large monstrous sounds. Though if you heard of any noise before then nothing much in this tape will stand out, its the kind of noise that is sort of typical for the genre and breaks no boundaries. Just straight 18 minutes of harsh noise, which I'm fine with, but doesn't leave much room for discussion.

Decided to check out Mal Waldron's One-Upmanship after seeing it in the sharethread that's up. I don't listen to as much free jazz as I would like to, so I was pleasantly surprised by said album. The piano-work by Mal is the right mix of improvisation and minimalism, almost Reich-esque at times. Overall, it's an 8/10 record.

Public Service Broadcasting- Inform - Educate - Entertain
this album bordered on offending me with how safe and average it was. Uninteresting in all regards. I don't understand why anyone would sample so many boring things, and so extensively. the instrumentation sounded overly clean; sterile. that's the word I think I needed.
This is a sterile album.

>midwest emo

Really cute and wistful emo with a great vocalist, but it /might/ be the most forgettable thing I've ever listened to this side of 3F=C. Not much more to say about this one, its a solid but insubstantial listen. The synths are nice though.

2.5+

Mississippi John Hurt - Avalon Blues: The Complete 1928 OKeh Recordings (1996)
>delta blues, piedmont blues

I guess I like my blues a bit more desolate with more throat-shredding vocalists. Don't get me wrong, this is good stuff, but its just a bit too upbeat and melodic, but I guess that's par for the course with piedmont blues. Really pleasant, but not as memorable as other bluesmen from this time period.

Also was this remastered or is the recording quality just incredibly good for 1928?

Hello all

>13th Floor Elevators - Psychedelic Sounds of

I like a lot of psychedelic stuff, and I was excited to hear this one, as I've heard a lot of good things about it. Although I thought it was good and solid, it didn't stand out too much for me compared to other psych-rock I've heard, especially after listening to The Parable of Arable land yesterday. The vocals sort of reminded me of Safe as Milk sometimes weirdly enough, and sometimes I got hints of Zappa. I'll listen to it more and see if I need to soak it in a bit more, but I still don't feel too impressed by this album. Favorite song was either Fire Engine or Reverberation. 7/10 overall.

like, i've been crappy in relationships when i was younger, but i own up to my mistakes and learn from them. i take responsibility for ever shitty thing i've done but now i have to live with the thought that i can't even own up to whatever mistakes they think i made in this relationship because there was nothing i could have done to prevent their feelings.

Distance (Row 2 column 4) was the dubstep that we Americans took the wub wub from and turned into WUBWUBWUB. A little too sedate/''dark'' for my taste

Jay-Z's Unplugged set might be the best thing he's ever done. Combining his hits from that point into one live setting with backing by The Roots highlights just how effective his lyricism and ear for production is. Nas lost the battle (and the version of Takeover incorporating the beats to Nas' own hits is killer) not because he was the weaker lyricist, but because he simply wasn't as fully formed a musician as Jay-Z was. Yes, commercial appeal was a huge factor for Jay-Z winning, but crossover appeal didn't fall into Jay's lap- he had the talent to stay true to the core fanbase and the business savvy to appeal to the casual listener's ears on the exact same songs. He's lost his way a bit since then (and who can blame him- what rapper has been consistently strong over the course of 20+ years?) but this is a testament to his ability and legacy within the genre.

I can't deny that Viet Cong was good but it just felt so safe somehow. Every variation that made it stand out felt like it was culled from a connect-the-dots of post-punk.

Kasra V's The Persian Prince was some sleek groovy house

Octa Octa was the right buttons for me that their previous EP I'd heard hadn't

Mall Grab had some serious jams going on. Great techno and I coincidentally heard one of the people I know with the best taste in music using it in a DJ set a few days later so that solidified to me that it wasn't me having shit taste in tunes

Lipelis was some very unexpected disco revival. Really well crafted, and I'm very interested to see if 2016 will bring more from them

A Year with 13 Moons had a load of tags to it but I was expecting more on the experimental/noise side but instead got a layered mix of ambient and drone that I quite enjoyed

Vibing Up the Senile Man was phenomenal. This is the kind of post-punk I really enjoy where they truly push beyond the boundaries of what punk was conceived to be. Truly ahead of its time

Drinkin My Own Sperm was surprisingly classy. I expected heavy left-field avant-garde experimentation and got very grounded psychedelic folk rooted in Southern America

From Here to Eternity probably would have had more teeth had it not been from 1999

Live Killers didn't really capture the band's live energy as I had felt it from their Live Aid appearance

Cyrus (Random Trio) was bland dnb to me

Alan Sondheim was enjoyable but didn't make me want more from him

DMX's Redemption of the Beast is disavowed by him because the label had him contractually obligated to a release and rather than work with him to put out what he wanted they just put together the material they already had and released it against his knowledge. There's actually a point in the album where one song has the exact same lyrics from DMX as the one before it, just with a different beat and a guest on the second version. Come for the trademark energy, stay for the trademark energy only

Kat Dahlia is fucking shit and I knew that before I downloaded her album yet I went along and downloaded it anyway for some reason and sure enough it was one of the most soulless things I've ever heard

Nacho Picasso has punchlines that are witty I guess but they come across as madlibs and are more eye-roll worthy than anything else. Never been a big fan of him but Blue Sky Black Death prove good collaborators for his style of rap

Hi /daily/!

I listened to Symphony for a Genocide yesterday but my internet was out so I couldn't share onions. Basically, it reminded me of early tape Merzbow. I remember hearing it a while ago on YT or something and for some reason I had a vivid image of screams in some of the tracks. Only because of that I spent a couple of months trying to find the recording...

There's nothing there. Just tape wanking and early industrial noise of mediocre quality.

5/10

Today I might start on the Mozart Piano concertos.

So, /mu/ recommend me punk bands from bandcamp or SoundCloud, please.

By the way I just recently started getting into punk. Other than entry level/baby's first punk, I'm new to the music.

>Camberwell Now - The Ghost Trade
I think I actually liked this better than This Heat. The music is more consistent than This Heat, at least. Good shit.

>Stara Rzeka
A mostly interesting album, but one that overstayed its welcome consistently. I get what this was going for, but I don't think it pushed its ideas far enough to really be stellar. This album is officially the greatest loser, though! Huzzah!

>Godz 2
One of them outsider albums yaknow? Mostly fine, mostly casual music. Pretty okay, exactly what you'd expect out of an outsider folk album.

>Blue Moses
This album had some absolutely stellar moments. However, they were interlaced with a few cheeseball jazz fusion sections and some womping themes that are sounding straight out of a damn clown show. Certainly worth the listen, despite what I would consider quite large peaks and valleys in terms of how much I enjoyed the music as the album played out.

We done round 1! Get them recs in bois!

>Fishmans - 98.12.28 Otokotachi no Wakare

What is beauty?
What defines beauty?
What makes a piece of music beautiful?
I don't know. Those questions are way too complex to be answered by me, but I know what makes this record, this particular live album, beautiful.
Simplicity and sincerity. It doesn't seem that much, but Fishmans based their whole sounds on these two concepts. This album revisits their whole output, where they started, how they evolved, where they finished.
Fishmans created their sound, a unique mix of dream pop, reggae, dub, with a sweet, cute aesthetic that brings everything together. Again, it doesn't seem that much, if you read about it.

But you don't have to read about it, you have to listen it.
A four-chords-progression played on an organ, like the one present in 頼りない天使 may not seem that special, but the way it works with the minimalistic drum beat, the beautiful, beautiful voice of Shinji Sato at his best, the warm, deep bass, the guitar, the lead synth, it leaves you breathless.
Not only that, this works so smoothly and perfectly because of the melodies: they are simple, yes, but they are emotional, they feel human, they make you feel warm inside, they satisfy you, they change your mood. It's very hard to explain why, or how, but they simply are perfectly written. Fishmans could've easily tried to make something more intriguing, more complex, more deep, but I'm glad they didn't. Oh boy I'm so glad they took the simple route that yes, it is simple, but is incredibly effective.
Why do I say that they could've done that? What are my proofs? Hell, just listen to how they play, to their performance! It's perfect, in every way.

[1/3]
>>
>>61600314
yeah I've got 1 or 2 from the other genres to check out too, I'm just putting them on a future chart, thanks though!
>>
>>61600350
Pay attention to the songs' structures: Fishmans are not afraid to experiment with them, they introduce new verses, they make the song evolve, they make the song change in subtle but clever ways, their instruments make the songs breathe, they make the songs feel organic, alive, and not just loop after loop.
This record is full of awesome arrangements and intense musical moments. I would try to describe them, or try to list them, but that would be completely useless, since they can't be simply explained like this, and can't be understood in this way.
The amount of variety is astonishing: upbeat jams, downbeat tracks, reggae, dub, unique compositions! No songs sound the same. But they all feel the same.
It's a very hard thing to do, but Fishmans completely passed this test.

So yes, this record is a pop masterpiece: the songwriting excels in every way, the performance is flawless, it has a unique, human feel, it's full of moments that will blow your mind, is always different, is entertaining as hell, it makes you feel something. It's fantastic.

[2/3]
>>
>>61600355
I wouldn't actually consider Woods Folk Metal though, more Doom Metal but they have a similar aesthetic to Agalloch. But cool.
>>
>>61600350
>What is beauty?
Stopped reading there.
>>
>>61600362

And then there is Long Season.
Their masterpiece, perfected, played in its entirety, as a closer.
This is one of the few compositions that I would describe as perfect. Flawless.
In my opinion, this song never gets less than spectacular. There isn't a single bad, mediocre, just ok moment. Everything is mind-blowingly awesome. If this was released as a stand-alone piece, I would give this a 10.

The track starts with a gentle guitar and a deep, warm bass, that play together, that play with each other, and with a little, contemplative synth.
After this intro, the main motif start. The instruments work perfectly with each other to build some gorgeous and satisfactory climaxes. The track slowly changes, evolves, with subtle changes in the instrumentation, in the melodies, in the layering. It even has a fantastic guitar solo.
Then we are introduced to the break of this track, its middle point, that contrasts the other two. I've gotta say that I didn't really liked it in the original Long Season, because it felt out of place, and it broke the atmosphere.
But here is perfect.
The ostinato piano melody continues playing, while its sound is slowly altered, and we have a fantastic drum solo, over an amazing ambient soundscape designed by synths and the sound of a million bells. It's almost transcendental. Scratch that, it is transcendental. It's hypnotic, it goes on for a long time, it takes you and it never lets you go, until it ends.
We are then introduced to the final, that uses the initial part to build something new, to build a flawless climax.
Everything returns here: the instruments are perfectly layered, and everything continues to change, to disappear, to return, creating a fantastic, changing, satisfactory wall of sound.

[3/4 actually]
>>
>>61600373

All of this intensity explodes in a precise moment: two seconds, around the 39:30 mark. This little, precise moment, is the peak of this song. It's the peak of this live. It's the peak of Fishmans music, and because of that, it's logical to have it close their story.
After that, everything slowly fades out, the instruments stop playing, the Long Season ends.
Fishmans' story ends here, in the most perfect way possible.

This live is a tribute to them, a retrospective of the best thing they ever did.
It's an emotional journey in the music of Sato and his friends.
The songs are warm, relaxing, emotional.
Long Season is intense, is mind blowing, is life changing.
This record leaves you tired, it leaves you with something.

Fishmans will never return back together, Shinji Sato is dead. But their legacy, their work, what they have done, that will live forever.
