anyone else think that most of hip-hop fans don't really understand Kendrick? Not saying that he's really deep but I get the impression that everyone is just using Rap Genius and not really digesting his music. Just look at the comments on youtube, "Kendrick, G-Eazy, Futuristic, and Logic.", "Holy shit that beat. Plus adding the lyricism of Kendrick? What a song".

Anyone else feel that critics just gave TPAB a perfect score as soon as it dropped because of the hype? I'm not saying that he didn't deserve it but reviews are almost pushed out as fast as possible. Do you think you can really review a "perfect album" with a perfect score in 1 or 2 days? Is this how we treat art now? Is there so much music that we just squeeze it out, is it all shock value?

hmm, i kinda agree. after that future concert where apparently kendrick went on after and half the people left. but I still think it went over a lot of people's head. None really dedicates themselves to listening to records in the mainstream public, which kendrick is in. It's more about the singles. some people might fall for the hype yes, but you don't need to listen to TPAB 50 times to realize its great. in all honesty I had the very strong feeling it was going to be a hailed as a new classic (not because its perfect but because of how good it is, the topics, etc) halfway through my first listen.

As if you didn't think it would be a classic before it dropped. I do like the album but it's just not what GKMC was to me. I liken it to Bob Dylan going electric. If you were listening to his acoustic folk records and then suddenly he came out with something completely different you'd have a very hard time adjusting to it. I just don't get the unanimous praise. For instances, critics were quoting wrong lyrics in their reviews and what not. Just seems really fucking stupid that we equate these specific people to deem something as classic or worthy. I like the idea of art being discussed in a public space but let's be completely fucking honest and say that /mu/ and people in general don't give a fuck what any critic writes. It's the score they give it that ultimately matters. It's what music has become now.

Kendrick specifically said he was going for the sound he wanted whether or not it was suited for the mainstream or radio. Good Kid MAAD City was the album for the people, Swimming Pools, Maad City, Backseat Freestyle all sound like they do on purpose.
