The other sharethread will soon be dead so here is a new one.

All genres welcome.
Complaining about genres that are shared is not welcome.
Requests are not welcome unless you share something yourself first.

Mongo Santamaria- Drums and Chants (recorded 1955, released 1978) (vinyl rip)

>guaguanco, Yoruba, Afro-Cuban chant
>A collection of traditional call-and-response chant that often borrows directly from the African styles that originated in the Congo before they moved west. This is one of Santamaria's earliest recordings and he enlists several important percussionists in the band, including Carlos 'Patato' Valdes.
please no western popular music shares so fucking sick of that shit
That image is racist as fuck.

Miles Davis- Miles Ahead (1957)

>big band, cool jazz, third stream
>Though Miles' name gets top billing, this project owes much of its success to the brilliance of Gil Evans' arranging. The program consists of mostly popular jazz compositions, arranged by Evans for large ensemble and featuring Miles Davis' warm tone on flugelhorn.

haha what? on /mu/?

Don't worry friend, nothing is popular here.

Orrin Evans- Liberation Blues (2014)

>This is a live recording from the new “Live at Smoke” series recorded at Smoke Jazz Club in NYC. Evans is one of the most unique and inventive pianists around and this release captures him with a fantastic band playing a number of Evans’ interesting original tunes, as well as several re-imagined standards. There is also a racially themed poem recitation which is accompanied by the band.

ever heard of this underground singer called taylor swift? or of the 500-last-fm-listener-indie-outfit vampire weekend? or this ominous kanye west person?

(fuck right off)

Richard Davis- Epistrophy and Now’s the Time (1972)

>post-bop, hard bop
>Bassist Richard Davis is known mostly for his work on Blue Note, where his flexible style of playing fit in well with players like Andrew Hill and Eric Dolphy. Later in the 70’s he also recorded several albums as a leader on the Muse label. This record consists of two 20+ minute jams by the quintet over several bebop standards, that move well beyond the realm of bebop during the solos.

Philip Catherine- Moods Vol. 1

>jazz, third stream
>This album is partly inspired by the late trio recordings of Chet Baker. Tom Harrell takes over on trumpet and this trio (trumpet, guitar, bass) runs through the interesting and relaxed compositions by Catherine. At some points there is also very light synthesizer layered into the music.

Włodzimierz Nahorny Trio- Heart (1967)

>adventurous swing-based free improvisation
>Multi-instrumentalist Wlodzimierz Nahorny begins and ends this record at the piano, for some fairly straightforward trio pieces along the lines of Bill Evans. He switches over to saxophone for the rest of the album for pieces that are very free and full of exciting and engaging enterplay between the trio. Number 15 in the ‘Polish Jazz’ series.

Eddie Palmieri- La Perfecta (1962)

>conjunto, salsa, guajira
>Later in his career pianist Eddie Palmieri would go on to be one of the best at mixing traditional Latin styles with jazz harmonies and improvisation but this early record stays very traditional in the Cuban tradition of dance music. There are several styles represented here—mambo, guajira, pachanga, and cha cha cha—it’s an early example of the music that would introduce the salsa craze of the 70’s.

Miles Okazaki- Generations (2009)

>avant-garde, progressive composition, thematic improvisation
>This is the second chapter in Okazaki’s compositional trilogy, where he mixes innovative and complex compositional techniques with the modern harmony and rhythmic figures. The pieces are enjoyable to listen to as music, but those interested in the compositional aspect will also find them very interesting to study.

Lloyd McNeill & Marshall Hawkins - Tanner suite

Lloyd McNeill is an american jazz flutist that never reached the recognition he deserves because of his independance wish, which led him to create the two record labels on which were issued in small quantity his six albums. as far as I'm concerned, he definitely stands among the top players of this instrument, along with herbie Mann, Yusef Lateef, James Moody or Bobby Jaspar. he's also been a painter (some of the cover arts for his albums are by him), a professor in university, a sculptor...
on this album, recorded in a museum in 1969, he teams up with bassist Marshall Hawkins (who worked a bit with Miles Davis) for four wonderful flute / bass duets freely developing the interplay

Rudresh Mahanthappa- Bird Calls (2015)

>contemporary jazz
>This album is inspired by one of jazz's greatest legends, altoist Charlie Parker, but Mahanthappa wants to make it clear that this isn't just a tribute album. His reworking's of Parker's tunes are thoroughly re-imagined to fit Mahanthappa's modern style of alto playing. He takes elements of Parker's music, rhythms, snippets of melody, melodic shapes, and creates new compositions with them that lead to exciting and intense improvisations.

John Escreet- Sabotage and Celebration (2013)

>progressive composition, free improvisation
>Pianist John Escreet takes influence from avant-garde jazz greats like Cecil Taylor and Andrew Hill, but he also takes elements from classical composers too. This album highlights his compositional skill, with a regular band plus a string quartet, for music that is very intense and energetic. The improvising is equally intense, and the piano solos are particularly abstract and free.

>hard bop, avant-garde

on this 1994 record, the french pianist plays with a dream rhythm section composed of Dave Holland on bass and Tony Williams on drums, and this trio is increased by a string quartet. Petrucciani stated that on this record, he wanted to melt the raw sourness of jazz with the fragile sweetness of the string quartet, bringing the two together in oder to make a new flavour. he album was recorded after his Blue note period, and showcases Petrucciani's unique style interplaying in an excellent way with his partners

for his first release as a leader, in 1970, Woody Shaw gave birth to one landmark double LP. as it has been said already, this record is incredibly advanced for a first release, using with such ease the post bop idiom that was developing at the time it looks like it has been made by one fully matured jazzman instead of a 26 years old. this album features, besides Shaw on trumpet, Ron Carter on bass, Clint Houston on electric bass, Bennie Maupin on tenor sax, bass clarinet and flute, Lenny White on drums, Georges Cables on keyboards and Gary Bartz on alto and soprano sax
