How can I get into Jazz?
>>
Follow the groove, how players interact with each other.
>>
You listen to it...
>>
>>54124744
Sticky

Also, nice dubs
>>
>>54124744
1. acquire jazz albums
2. listen to jazz albums
>>
>>54124744
You have to learn about the tempo.
>>
>>54124744
1. listen to a jazz album
2. decide if you like it or not
3. listen to another jazz album
4. goto 2
>>
You pretty much have to be a musician
>>
>>54124744
listen to early jazz first. Swing, New Orleans Jazz, and Rag-influenced jazz are a lot less complex than Bebop and Third Steam 50s and 60s stuff. don't go for Trane and Miles first, instead, pick up Duke, Armstrong, Goodman, Shaw, and Tatum. Hell, you might even wanna start with Ragtime.

>>54124760 is good advice. Jazz is all about interaction.
>>
>>54124744

get some super entry level shit, decide what you like about it, then keep listening to other shit with similar sounds. or decide you don't like it or need a change, and get the opposite

It's also pretty essential to listen to some live jazz, and would help to learn something about jazz theory and performance by taking a class/reading books/etc. I didn't really "get jazz" until I heard it performed live and understood more about how it works.

Ty bye
>>
Start with your local jazz radio station, see what you like

no offense, but this chart is rubbish.

JTG's charts are better, since they actually detail the styles of jazz that entry-level albums represent. this one is just plain vague.

This.
One of the best made charts for any genre.
>>
>>54124821
This is very good advice. Good job, anon
>>
>>54124990
>your local jazz radio station
That's dodgy territory. You may just end up with KennyG.fm .
>>
>>54124843

>give me something traditional!
>recommends a Monk album

This chart needs to be reworked.
>>
It sucks and I’m tired of hearing about it. Believe me I’ve tried getting into Jazz, like you. I just hate the parts I hate about it more than I like the little things there are to like. The batting average is just so low I can’t bear the dead time between highlights being filled with all that noodling. It’s vain music.
>>
>>54125242
It must suck leading an existence like this.
Do you also hate classical music?
>>
>>54125167
Can't speak for a lot of that list but damn that piano trio column is on point.
>>
>>54125213
like i said, this chart is rubbish. it's literally all buzzwords and no substance. for example, what makes Maiden Voyage "daring" and not "chill", when it's a modally-focused cool album just like Kind of Blue? in fact, it could be considered even less daring because in 65, when it came out, modal jazz was nothing new.

i'm not trying to jerk off JTG, but he put great work into >>54125139 and >>54125167.
>>
>>54125242
>I don't like it so nobody can
ok retard
>>
Eh, I'm listening Benny Goodman right now.
>>
>>54125308
Thoughts? He's not a bad place to start, very catchy but well made stuff. He's the kind of person you could recommend to nearly everyone. Even normies.
>>
>>54124820
agree with this post, anyone looking to get into jazz would do good to start with these artists. just listen to "west end blues" and you'll be on the right path
>>
>>54125139
>>54125213
>>54125306
I haven't actually looked at that chart in a long time and I don't know much about jazz, so sorry for posting something misleading. It does look like the other charts in this thread are better and more detailed.
>>
>>54125213
was gonna say the same exact thing

>>54125242
>>54125257

Pretty sure this is an Albini quote

destroyed :)

In all honesty, I am not a fan of Jazz.

I like Classical, but I am too entry level to consider myself a fan. I adore what i have heard so far

lol did not see that one coming, nice

>>54125864
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
>>
>>54125888
We had a big argument over on /jazz/ about this a while back. There's a few copies of this chart floating around where that's been edited off.
>>
Learn to play. There's really no point in listening to jazz if you can't understand everything that's going on.

It's like watching a foreign film where dialogue I important but you can't understand the language and they didn't included subtitles.

I always cringe when non-musicians try to have a discussion about jazz with me.

"that sax sounded awesome xD!"

>>54125139
>Unit Structures
>Free Jazz
>>
>>54126568
That's a bit mean.
You can certainly appreciate it without playing it and there's enough superficial stuff to discuss with someone who doesn't have theory that having a conversation with someone who is just enthusiastic can be as interesting as one with someone who has got theory.
