Any recommendations for Korean groups/bands that aren't kpop?
Looking mainly for rock, indie, electronic, or jazz, but anything you find worth listening to is fine.

I'm Korean-American but I don't fuck with all-Korean lyrics because I'm not pretentious enough to pretend I enjoy shit I don't fully understand.
That being said, these two Korean-American punk bands are pretty good:
Resist & Exist: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vz0C_-A43oE
Assassination Squad: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5PUL44uBPc
FUCK KPOP AND FUCK KPOP "FANS".
BUNCH OF POSERS.
yeah, but keep in mind that i haven't updated this in ages

TOP KEK, and they said gooks ought to be the smart ones

stole my two choices mang - both beautiful albums (the bassline on Korean Alphabet amirite)
And mukimuki are def weird, but there is an earnestness in their vocal explosions, in that tribal drumming - A ritualistic fervor that I find absolutely wonderful
Also, if you like post-rock/shoegaze - Zzzam is pretty cool (im sure you can find an album - though I still havent found the one this jam is from)

but your pretentious enough to put lyrics above sound, right :^)
Kim Doo Soo is Korean, I think and he's a phenomenal psych folk artist on top of that.

Shin Jung Hyun and the Men do some great work.
did some great work...
still do? I don't know. But yeah great band.
OP here, thanks for all the feedback. I'll definitely check all these out.
This might not interest you, but I just wanted some opinions. Although I'm a Korean American, I haven't listened to much Korean music on my own accord. Most of my exposure comes from my parents who mainly listen to kpop or the traditional folk music, which seeing as how I didn't learn much of the language to begin with, definitely affected how I perceived Korean music growing up. But now that I'm older, I'm trying to get myself to listen to the country's music.
Do you think it's important that I try to immerse myself in my country's musical culture, or should I not worry as much?
>>53531791
Korean American here too. I think you should listen to whatever the fuck you want to listen to. I do enjoy the korean side of my heritage so finding good music (not kpop) is p cool.

>>53531862
There was k-pop in the 60s and 70s, too. J-pop was also better in the 70s and 80s.
>>53531937
I actually kind of want to know who your parents like too...

It's a great EP by a small indie band from Korea.
I think they changed their name though, someone should post their other stuff if they know of it.

my parents don't really like music that much
my father was into pet shop boys once but only because i liked them and made him 'best of' mixtapes to listen while driving
thanks for asking tho

I have no idea. Like I said before, I never really paid attention to Korean music as a kid, much less asked my parents about their preferences.

pretty amazing how the language border keeps people from ever hearing some great music.
>>53532236
some of my all time favorite songs are sung in a foreign language. Just because I can't understand it doesn't mean I don't like how it sounds or the flow of the song.
Sure, I want to learn some of the languages so I can understand the lyrics someday, but it doesn't do any harm to not know what they're singing about.
>>53532143
dude they sound cool - thanks for the dl link mang
>>53532304
I'm right there with you. Even in English I rarely pay too much attention to lyrics. I could only recite lyrics to a handful of my favorite songs. The voice is just like another instrument in the song and what it's saying only matters half the time. I can understand most korean but I used to listen to japanese music all the time and I have no idea what they're saying. Or take Sigur Ros for example, using a made up language.
>>53532532
yeah, really in the end, if it sounds good and makes you want to hear it again, it doesnt matter if you understand the lyrics or not.
>>53530844
Way to go. Do the same thing he did. Generalize.
A genre isn't exempt from wisdom. What, do you live in your mom's basement? Go outside and learn about the world.
