Does /mu/ liek RHCP?
>>
They're meh. They range from generic alternative rock to horribly watered down funk.
>>
Not at all.
>>
First album is great. The rest is just washed down pop version of that.
Frusciante in Peppers was useless, his solo career is much better.
>>
Very hit and miss.

I like a few of their singles, and they do have a great live presence.
"By the Way" is probably their #1 song, followed by Under the Bridge/Around the World
but I have pleb taste.
Very weak as a funk group, but Funky Munks is decent
Overall I like them, but i'm not going to listen to an entire album in a sitting.
>>
>>53155756
>not breaking the girl

>>
Their good material could easily fit on one CD
>>
>>53155681
YES

>Woodstock 99
Flea was really letting it all hang out at that concert.
>>
bssm is one of those albums i can put on and enjoy anytime. don't care for their other stuff tho.

also frusciante is a genius
>>
>>53155901
this

Blood Sugar Sex Magick is one of those great "sex, drugs, and rock and roll" albums. I also enjoy Californication, too, but I feel like that's about all you need.
>>
Flea and John have done some god-tier live jams.

John kept all of his clothes on at Woodstock 99 'cos his chest was covered with heroin scars.
>>
"I'm forever near a stereo saying 'What the fuck is this!?' And the answer is always RHCP."

>>
Radio stations refused to play GIA when it first came out because it wasn't melodic enough.
>>
>>53156005
I think it was originally Flea's idea back in the 80s to do the naked stuff.
>>
>>53155681
Not really.
>>
>>53156018
umm, im not sure heroin works like that.
>>
didnt know draco malfoy started a band lmao
>>
>>53156701
That was what I heard anyway. He had a lot of needle tracks back then and didn't feel comfortable going shirtless.
>>
Woodstock 99 also featured probably the last great Metallica concert ever.
>>
>>53156784
That whole thing was a really hippie-esque event so bands like RHCP fit in great there, but Metallica and Korn were like...whoa.
>>
Ah yeah, the last great epoch of guitar music. I'm not sure another Woodstock-like event could ever be done again although they're talking about having one in 2019.
>>
Frusciante and Flea are so good together
>>
>>53156005
link to the footage? research purposes of course

What? Go to Youtube and search "rhcp woodstock 99". Why would you even need to ask such an elementary question?

huh didn't think they'd allow it
>>
>Californication-era Anthony and his blonde bowl cut
>>
>>53155681
RHCP would be an incredible band if they had a good frontman
>>
They still did the nude thing during the Dave Navarro era. No idea if he participated and I'd rather not know.
>>
Flea is massively overrated, he's just not that good. Frusciante and Chad are good and Anthony is oviously shit tier. I like some red hot things but I thing mostly because of nostalgia purposes.
>>
>>53156753
when he got off the drugs he needed all his teeth replace cause of lethal oral infection, skin grafts on his arms from all the scars, and nose reconstruction surgery. He did coke, crack, heroin, drank, and smoked pot, so his body was probably just destroyed.
>>
rhcp is pretty eh but frusciantes solo work is pretty incredible
>>
>>53155944
the first disc of stadium arcadium is great all the way through but disc 2 is real hit or miss with each song
>>
shit band , they have some decent songs , but as a whole , the shit overcome the good by 1:10
>>
>>53156942
He's not the best bassist ever like many people rate him - in that sense I agree that he's overrated but I'd say he's still pretty good.
At least better than Chad, I don't think Chad is that great, personally.
>>
>>53156913
This pretty much sums it up
>>
>>53155681
Definition of a singles band
>>
>>53157040
I like Chad's drumming it's not incredible but when he's grooving he's grooving hard. I used to fanboy hard on flea but honestly, he's really average.
>>
>>53157086
I just find that - perhaps especially more now than in the 80s - he just can't keep time that well. I used to look up to how he'd lock in grooves with Flea for that tight rhythm section but I've seen them live a few times since 2006 and he lost time noticeably on multiple occasions every show... Maybe I've just been unlucky?
>>
>>53157119
I saw them live at 2011 and chad was pretty good. Live is a different case than at the studio though and chad has some studio tracks where he's just amazing.
>>
>>53156949
Must have been way worse than Anthony as far as drug damage because the latter obviously had his shirt off most of that concert and looked perfectly fine.

John was literally homeless for a while in the 90s, that's how bad his addiction had become.
>>
I'm impressed you're able to browse /mu/ while longboarding across campus, OP
>>
When they first recruited Chad in 88, after their original drummer quit, he was mostly a hard rock/metal fan and he didn't know a dang thing about funk.
>>
They only have two songs anyway - funk rock and ballad.
>>
Nah.
>>

not denying this but i'd like sourcE?

>>53155681

>>
If only Anthony were as nice IRL as he claims to be in his autobiography.
>>
I love John, does that count?

what does these symbols mean? "**" "*" "the bomb". the "**" means it's good or what? and im assuming a bomb is bad
>>
>>53155723
This. This is the truest statement I've ever heard about this band
>>
>>53159319
One or two stars like you'd see in a movie rating guide.
>>
>>53159438
so why the fuck is he rating with both stars and grades? and what the fuck is THE BOMB?
>>
>>53159456
>so why the fuck is he rating with both stars and grades?
Because he's Christgau and he has neither rhyme nor reason in his rating system.
>and what the fuck is THE BOMB?
Just what you think it means.
>>
>>53159484
i'm just going to assume that giving a bomb to an album means it's THE BOMB . there's no other reason to give an album a bomb
>>
>>53159484
Also he seems to be confused about what exactly "metal" is. He referred to Motley Crue and Def Leppard as metal when anyone with a brain would know they're not metal bands.
>>
>>53159594
they're hair metal aren't they?

Post your face when HUMP DE BUMP
>>
>>53159657
Of course. Hair metal is a variant of hard rock. It's not metal at all. Metal has more distortion than hard rock although the line between the two can sometimes be blurry.
>>
>>53159690
so why do they call it hair metal and not hair rock?
>>
>>53159690
In the 80s, it used to be common to refer to any heavy band as "metal".
>>
>>53159736
I think the proper term is "glam rock" although that's another confused term since it originally meant 70s British artists like Queen, Bowie, and Elton John, all completely unconnected to hair metal.
>>
>>53159791
but glam metal is also a genre. these bands are just glam metal

RHCP is the band I loved as a teen, I think they work as a good stepping stone as popular generic music that's different enough to open ones tastes
>>
>>53159126
Niandra Lades & Usually just a t-Shirt good is some good stuff (if you like beefheart and Syd Barrett, you'll like this). Smile from the Streets You Hold is good too, but it's pretty heavy at times and it's really love or hate thing.

Ataxia w/ joe lally of fugazi is worth checking out too.
>>
>>53159126
The Will to death is one of my favourites. Niandra lades is his weirdest and best.

It wasnt from heroin, but his hands were severely burned and scarred back in the 90s when he was addicted to some drugs.
>>
>>53155723

>>
Yeah, their concerts seem quite fun. They're somewhat enjoyable to hear occasionally in the car or sumthin', I don't really actively listen to them anymore though. Frusciante era was the best and his solo albums are great.
>>
>>53155723
This man speaks the truth. I did enjoy RHCP when I was 12 or 13.
>>
Probably my biggest nostalgiacore band

>listening to By The Way on a tape player and cd player on the bus to school
>learning the opening to Scar Tissue on guitar with me m8s
>deciding that Road Trippin' was the song of the summer for me and my best m8 who I showed my willy to and found out his was bigger
>reading Scar Tissue
>going to see them with some m8s and headbanging in front of some older girls who patronized us
>asking a visiting drug awareness group in school if Zephyr was a drug because I didn't know it was like a hot air balloon

Good feels mang
>>
>>53162102
I know that feel man. Hot summer air whipping on my face as I listened to By The Way. Feels good
>>
>>53162151
It was a great album. Dosed is my favourite, and I Would Die For You comes a close second. It was popular around the time when I drifted away from my friends and spent all summer cycling to their houses to find they were all out together and when my first and only qt gf who I still think and sometimes dream about began attracting other guys and when I became too insecure to talk to her any more. The Killers' debut album was great for these feels too, though a year or so later.

Coffeeshop and walkabout are some of their funkiest songs and criminally underrated. Navarro doesn't have the feel of frusciante but he's a better technical player, obviously a lot better in janes addiction. Some of his playing on Strays is fucking awesome

>>53163235
I should say the breakdown in coffeeshop, not the whole song. I liked the harder edge Navarro brought. Wish they could've taken it further.
