Nightly Music Production Thread: Mixing With Headphones is like Having a Long Distance Relationship edition
Ask question, post work in progress, share tips, fall into a crippling depression when you realize your mixing will never be as good as your favorite producer
>>52063653
my mixing fucking sucks and i also don't really understand what you mean by the edition name
h-help?
>>52063784
Not OP, but long distance relationships never work or so they sey.

All I can afford are headphones, and honestly they aren't bad for mixing if you learn their biases and have good ears. I test my mixes on my phone, laptop speakers, tablet, friend's car, etc. to figure out if something's fucked up. The general rule is that if it sounds fucked up in an environment built to make your mix sound BETTER, then you've missed something.
>tfw want to play live, but I'd need to buy a bunch of gear to do so/it wouldn't be worth the money
>>52063880
well it depends what you produce too
I wouldn't mix with headphones if my life depended on it. Because I produce bleeps with tons and tons of low end
How do I become less shit?

Seriously, I'm trying, but I can't seem to come up with anything that sounds cohesive/decent

lrn2mixing. Everything sounds too thin. Watch tutorials online, read and educate yourself. Mixing is an art
When you have 16/32 bars of something you like, repeat them and change things as you go along. At first it will sound repetitive but the more you do it, the easier is to make the transitions/changes
Listen to your favorite producers and see things they do with their tracks.
Good luck.

does anyone knows what helps not being frustrated so easily while producing? especially when i'm mixing and i just can't get it right, everything i want to do is to stop

Am i vaporwave yet?
Kontakt and izotope trash only.
>>52064292
don't overwork. the ear gets tired and you no longer have an objective view of the song
also, try replicating songs from other artists and work out their tricks, chord progressions and song formulas. works wonders when you're starting out
>>52064292
usually reading about mixing helps, or watching tutorials.
What are you frustrated about?

You have to stop seeing music production as an end product, and more of a fun experience that is worth it just for the process. Personally, I cannot wait to start my next project just am I am about to finish the one I'm working on.
You have to remember that any producer worth his salt spent years perfecting his sound. Isn't like they had anything we don't, quite the contrary. We have software and gear that the first bleep producers could only dream of owning.
If you are getting frustrated, walk away. Take a week off, watch tutorials in the meantime, make mental notes. Watch more tutorials, listen to your fav music, write down ideas etc. Sometimes loosening up with the aid of booze/maree-juana helps. No, smoking weed will not turn you into Vladislav Delay but it might help loosen up ideas you have in your mind
Oh and don't be so rigid. If you come across a mistake/something unexpected. Work around it. I've started entire tracks just by isolating a single interesting sound in one of my channels
anyone have some nice live performances where you can clearly see what the artist is doing?
something like so:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqXrh8LITSs
I feel it really helps to watch what they do with samplers and synths so you can apply similar techniques on your project
>>52064331
Did you compose all that yourself or are you sampling another song?
Sounds a bit like Boards of Canada in a way.
What's a good vibraphone VST/sample pack?
>>52064477
All composed
and thanks
>>52064331
good stuff. you should build on it
making weird industrial hip-hop beats

did i do good?
>>52064502

its really cool, but you should add reverb to some of the instruments and drums. And round out some of the more annoying high frequencies with EQ
>>52064538

this is really well done. Make it sound more wet and make some of the instruments wider
I just got into music production and have an mpk25 with Ableton Live 8, no clue on how to work with it. Anyone know how to start on the basics of the basics and so forth?
hey /prod/
If you don't use Renoise you're a faggot.
Nah, just kidding.
If you don't use Renoise you're probably the type of person who does not enjoy complicating their lives for no good reason.
>>52065055
stop trying to justify your purchase faggot
