yeah sorry that wasn't very clear

ok so cybotron started in 80
(numbers didn't come out til late 81)
then planet rock was 83 (as a result of numbers more than anything), and electro lasted until about 85 really

then much later drexciya started doing stuff influenced by all of it, but mostly influenced by juan and UR really

and that particular track has a 4/4 with some extra kicks, and that UR type constant chord - so it really doesn't qualify in my book

it's electro-ish techno if anything

Well I mean, what are your options.

If you're not doing anything else, Detroit Swindle is really good actually compared to some other stuff. They're no complete heads amazingness but they're not bad either. You should definitely go there's people out there who don't have the ability to go to shows like that who would gawk at you if you didn't, me included.

Nah jungle's origins can be traced back to Frankie Bones, who pioneered "breakbeat" style and was an american.

I'm definitely saying Detroit swindle is better than this.

to me it seems like a choice between rather (don't freak out here) generic house and a chance for a great house/techno/electro/ebm/post-punk/i'll just say metal dance/whatever the fuck else set. a safe option and a risky option because i seem to have no chance of figuring out what the fuck trevor jackson actually plays as a dj or if he's a good dj for that matter. certainly a great selector though.

but i do know some things

that guy who mentioned frankie bones was right, but bones wasn't the first either (people like andre manuel were doing similar things before), and before that in like 87 that you got miami bass records with sampled breaks at >120bpm, it gets fuzzier the further back you go

point is you can't ever really pinpoint things, i keep finding earlier and earlier records that fuck up most plotted histories

and nothing ever happens in some isolated place -records have been exported and imported since before we were all born

Norwegian here. Planning to go to England as soon as I have enough money. I've got a couple of questions for you brits.

1. What city is best for cratedigging/venues?
2. What type of venues do you go to?
3. Do you take drugs when you go to venues? What do you take?

I'd like to get as close to the underground scene as possible, with calm people and good vibes. I hear the nightlife in England can be very shabby, I'd like to keep away from that. Where do you find those places in England? Genres don't matter as much, but I'm very much into Akkord these days, and I've listened a lot to dubstep in the past.

I'm trying to introduce good music to this girl and I played her Jamie XX's essential mix while we made whoopie, and she absolutely loved it. She's asked me to link her some more mixes that are like it; full of upbeat, soulful, and preferably vocal, house.

I'm much more into the darker side of 4/4, so all I can think of is Frankie Knuckles' RA mix and Disclosure's xlr8r podcast.

Any recommendations?

>do you make playlists because you hope somebody will think you're cool or something?

I make them for people who are trying to get into certain types of music that are harder to look for since it was hard as fuck for me to look for what I wanted when I started actually looking for music 5 years ago. It's basically me doing all the dirty work for people starting out with it so they won't have to be like I was when I started.
>>
>>48163172
It's pretty simple man, maybe get some hardware and learn it really well. Depends on how invested you want to get with production.
>>
>>48163223
What is holding you back? Analyze that
>>
sure is samefag in here
>>
>>48163236
are you sure you aren't still getting into things? those playlists are alright but you really have some shitty taste in house music.

Honestly for me, I just want to get my feet wet in it so I can see if I really want to get into it. If I don't care much for it, I'll just stick to DJing. It may be hard as fuck to get leeway with just DJing but I mostly just do it for the fun of it all. All I really want is more gigs. Preferably long sets. Not much else. Only gotten one long set. It was great.

Well that's like your opinion, man. Most people seem to like my taste and track selection hence why I'm getting gigs with pretty much no real promotion or "hustling".
>>
>>48163313
Personally I don't see the point in DJing exclusively. It seems pretty easy and you're basically just collecting other peoples music and playing it back.

I mean, not to say that I don't respect what you do, it's just that it seems painfully boring. Production is just tons of fun, personally.
>>

What about muh Ben UFO tho?

:/

>>48163268
ive pretty much come to the conclusion im never going to be able to make a track that could ever impress me because deep down i know i fucking hate dance music so instead i want to focus on live shows instead and make dance music into a show rather than just a dj on a stage. ive got plans for everything i just need time at this point
itz all gud m8

That's why I'm getting into it to see if I would like it. I like digging for those hidden gems and playing them out to see the reactions of the crowd. It's a joy for me. Plus I don't want to be one of those faggot producers who puts out shitty tracks constantly thinking they're hot shit just because the tracks are finally "finished".

hard to do a lot of djing without being a producer though

bufo exception of course
>>
>>48163603
yeah, but in an active, involved way, I find it a great way to think more about how dance tracks work when seeing how different tracks mix
and I like sharing music so its the best hobby for that
>>
>>48163449
>Production is just tons of fun
it is but youll have day where you just fucking hate yourself an everything you make sounds like shit. there are amazing days though and it makes it all worth it.

>>48163455
i cant be bothered to listen to a lot of it or watch any DJ or band live and i kind of hate dance music but i love it at the same time. the amount of creativity possible is incredible. I think dance music gives me a bad taste in my mouth is because the creativity aspect isnt being utilized enough so i want to change that. Making better music only comes with time but you can easily improve a live set to just add in a little more creativity and something extra so its not just a guy on a stage moving a fader around occasionally. Electronic music could be so much better

>>48163521

You're oversimplifying like most people on this board and most rockists do for the most part. You're basically setting a mood/vibe with the tracks you play. Most people nowadays don't know how to do that. This is why the best DJs are usually humble, chill people. They know it's not all about them behind the decks. It's a mutual experience. You're connecting with people with music you like.

But yes, in the end you're basically playing other people's music.

I personally like playing those older underrated gems and bringing them back to life. Shit's cash, m8. Then again I don't care when something came out. I play whatever sounds good. Good music is timeless.

the track that was going to get played at a festval on the main stage was a trap remix?

It is easy to be a DJ, it takes practice and a bit of listening time to be a good DJ, but I feel it takes a LOT of practice and a LOT of experience to be great.
