If you really stop and think about it, IBO has a Faustian thing going for it. Sure, there's Mika giving up parts of his body to power up Barbatos, but there's more than that.

Despite initially being afraid of Mika, Orga believed as long as he had the murderhobo at his side he could do anything, so they entered into an agreement. In exchange for following Orga, Orga would lead Mika to the place where they belong. This is Orga selling his soul to Mika, and afterwards Orga feels he has to live up to Mika's expectations of him, so they have to do crazy shit in order to move forward. When Orga is breaking down after Biscuit's death, Mika is there to remind him of their deal and push him into being the leader Mika expected him to be. Orga had to take on a badass persona, and his speeches ended up poisoning the minds of those he was leading so they all had the same expectations in him that Mika did. Orga wanted to lead his men to a happy ending, but they were all so poisoned he ended up making decisions that ended up destroying Tekkadan.

McGillis also sold his soul to Mika. Mika and Tekkadan's strength inspired him to begin his plans and throw his lot in with them. He even went so far as to sacrifice his friends to do so.

In the end they're all drinking that kool-aid of power Mikazuki is handing out, leading to their own destruction. And remember, Mikazuki's nickname is the Devil of Tekkadan.

Different anon, but I'd like to say that I think there can be something to be said for interpretations that aren't intended by the author. Although IBO has pretty poor writing, the show is certainly more interesting when viewed in >>9752 's context.

It can be interesting to look at shows from different angles. Then again, I guess you could also defend some pretty retarded interpretations with the same line of thinking. Ultimately I think it's more of a subjective thing about what interpretations a given viewer finds interesting. Even bad shows can sometimes be interesting when viewed in a different light.

That's not really true, unless you count most characters barely characters. Which you probably do. Most people here don't understand story structure which is why they fall back on very thin criticisms in a story that is addled in its narrative and full of many problems, but most people can only come up with "no personality" "no character" "no development" (not understanding that characters don't need to go through major shifts or changes in thought or emotional process depending on the events of the story).

Eugene serves his role as a supporting character just fine, same as Akihiro and Shino and Yamagi and Ride, all with varying degrees of being underwritten at many moments.

My opinion on it, despite not being a Gaelio fan, is that it was a storytelling device and infused very old themes into one roll of a character, which is more important than if it's an "asspull" or not. Likewise, how he's propelled the story or affected it matters -- he has by putting the final nail in McGillis's plans when he interrupted his broadcast and has also killed him, while still carrying on a recurring theme in the series while he has and struggling with his own humanity and emotions. I don't think any of this is greatly written at all, in fact none of IBO is, but I think people's "criticism" is usually pretty shitty of it.

A character does not need to have layers and layers of complexity or "depth" to have established traits that can be contradicted or thrown out. I don't think he was "tarnished" anyway and argued against it, but yeah, it does have to do with understanding story structure and what role supporting casts serve otherwise you end up having a bunch of half-thoughts like you do. Do you think Atra has depth? Kudelia? Shino? Yamagi? What do these characters have unique to them that is not shared by Tekkadan as a theme or isn't shared by a lot of characters?
