She's been attached to some popular productions in the past, enough to get some level of name recognition. A lot of those productions were adaptations of other people's work though, not her own original writing. She also has a reputation for melodrama over there.

Director Nagai though is more the issue, due to how he has handled some adaptations like A Certain Magical Index. Otaku even created terms, Cloverfield and Nagai Space, that cover all the common criticisms of his work and SURPRISE! IBO suffers from a lot of them despite not being an adaptation.

While I have dabbled in the "IBO is meant to present the darker aspects of shonen stories audiences accept without thinking," interpretation here before (the show is setup to be a basic shonen show), going into the final episode I really doubt that now.

As the director himself said, even though he believes Tekkadan are going down the wrong path it's important that the audience doesn't think so. I feel if the show wanted to deconstuct shonen shows, the show itself should have shifted gears a little. As time goes on make us question Tekkadan more and more, as well as some moments that should make the viewers uncomfortable. Stuff like Merribit crying that kids shouldn't act like Tekkadan were during Carta's death. Instead, IBO feels like shonen played pretty straight. If the show was meant to be a mafia story like the director also claims, it should have stopped treating Tekkadan as victims as time went on as well.

If there was members of the production that wanted to handle child soldiers and real-world issues with this show, it's quite obvious they were not the ones in charge of the production. There might have been that intent originally, but the powers that be just took one look at it and went "good. This child soldiers thing will sell, just like it did with Heero and Setsuna. But you can drop a bunch of this crap, it will put viewers off of this show entirely. Make it more like Naruto or a neutered Attack on Titan, that'll get people's attention." It feels less like it's trying to be thought-provoking, more the show trying to be edgy and popular.

I honestly think that the music ruins IBO. Not that it's bad, but it makes it harder for the auidence to question Tekkadan.The music makes them seem heroic when they really aren't. Another issue is making Tekkadan or Turbines deaths seem more important that an antagonist dying. This is really something. The show is really in the gray area, but a lot of it's most diehard fans treat it as black and white.

Iok ignores the Turbines surrender and kills Naze - Bad. But when Orga has people begging for their lives before Mikazuki kills them - good. Gaelio's Kimaris Vidar has danslief's it never uses in the show - oh he's evil. Shino fires a danslief in an attempt to kill Rustal - he's a good guy all right. Avenge the Turbines Shino, an eye for an eye.

The whole thing reminds me of Urobuchi's thoughts on how G-Reco was about the dangers of stories. Narratives shape how the audience sees things and can be used to manipulate emotional responses. Bella Swan is a lovely girl, wise beyond her years instead of a massive bitch. That sort of thing and people buy it. And they follow up G-Reco with IBO, which helps illustrate Urobuchi's point.

Iok was completely in the wrong, while Tekkadan wasn't completely right, they were Justified.

The difference is that G-Reco's message is explicitly that narratives are dangerous. And the themes run deep in the show.

Hell, the main antagonist barely does anything to directly oppose the main cast, but Cumpa's thematically opposed to the philosophy of the heroes, since Cumpa's the one who curated the war by pulling wool over peoples' eyes and leading them to war. In other words he's the guy pushing narratives. He's also the uninvolved watcher vs. the heroes who engage the conflict to stop it.

I'd have liked Julieta and Iok to take down Barbatos and Gusion respectively, without the Dainsleif but the thing here is that the final battle was rushed.

They needed that last stand to end as fast as possible so the epilogue could be done in the second half. Just leaves a bad taste in my mouth that Julia wasn't allowed to defeat barbatos because of some silly time constraint. Maybe the movie version will change this.

IBO was a wild ride, man. But that ending was so worth it watching Mika eat shit.
