the writer bit off more than he could chew, and he decided he needed to pull a george lucas and tie off every single irrelevant plot detail with a nice little bow. that and his characters ended up mostly fully developed before they end of the fic so in that respects the fic stagnated. also his stupid little prewar OC donut steal behind every major plot point from the base fic really undermined the base fic. this and a laundry list of other complaints is why PH is terribad.

and unfortunately it gets worse as you read it and by the time it gets full cancer you are already too sucked in to drop the stupid thing

THe depression is very real, and very infuriating as he spent too much on the whole, you're a slave, a failure for it to have impact.
It gets better later, but its one of those, show some more, some more, I didn't mean show you're a trap! I'm still okay with this turn of events.

Honestly, it took about half the fic to actually say, okay maybe some good should fall into his life, at which point its almost the finale quest point.


Now Heroes.
THat's a fic I forgot about for a while then came back and found it was good.
The author spent some time playing New Vegas and basically forgot to do more than name changes for a chunk. He admitted it was a mistake, but he doesn't feel like fixing it before the end, simply so he can actually finish.


Frozen Skies is pretty good, I like that its actually inoking political games, while having action mystery.
Its just, I expect it to end worse as everything will go down like anime. "If you had simply checked the basement of your dead father or made him write it down, all of this could have been avoided"

Murky Number Seven is actually my all time favorite side story. Murky as a character is rather adorable and it actually gets me to feel when he gets turbofucked by the world. The Metro scenes are actually spooky and I thought the ending wrapped it up well.

Friendly reminder that the original Fallout Equestria was the engaging story that Fallout should have consisted of.
The plot being able to piggyback onto the existing story that MLP set in place made it even more vivid when corporate espionage reached a boiling point and that zebras are literal african niggers who managed to crumble an entire country despite being starved for resources.
In the end though the happening of the book lay out the problems that come from pensive inactivity while everything is going to shit while trying too hard in the wrong places can also cause an apocolypse. Twilight you fucking idiot.
Plus it has lesbians.

I'm read the original, horizons, heroes, and am currently reading murky #7.
The original is overrated, but it's still decent enough, I suppose.
Horizons is controversial, and understandably so, but I liked it slightly more than the original.
Heroes was fun and has a refreshing different setting, but I never got around to finishing it.
Murky reads a bit differently from most side-stories and provides interesting perspective. It is currently my favorite (still reading it)

Yes, I finished Horizons. I felt that I needed to justify the time I had spent reading it by finishing it.
And I can agree that Murky Number Seven is the best FO:E sidestory. I like it more than the original, even. It has really good writing and characterization.

Generally speaking, people only bash the original for the same reason a number of vidya fans bash Ocarina of Time. I guess there must be some weird appeal in criticizing what a fandom usually praises.

I just like some sidestories more than the original because I feel like they expand more on the worldbuilding and characters.
And yes, I am aware that without the original there would be no sidestories or inspiration for it.
A better example would be like a modded video game (take Bethesda's Fallout, for example)
the game is fine on it's own, and obviously is very popular, but the experience is made much more enjoyable with mods and expansions.
