Would have been better if it was literally any other character trying to ruin the rock familys tradition. They kinda build up apple bloom to be the one to dislike the rock familys tradition, why not have her ruin it instead?

These are episodes I LIKE.

Watch the episode again anyway. The point was to come together for the holiday, not Pie custom introductory. Nothing that happened was a unexpected though. Still don't see why the Apples had to do it the Pies way 100% of the time, at least for AB sake give out the presents later in the room.

I don't think its a nitpick, it really furthered the character degradation of applejack which began in somepony to watch over me. She was supposed to be the family value character, her episodes could have been about sticking to values too much (like forcing AB into values she disagrees with), but not in a way that undermines other families own values. It just seems like character assassination for applejack, something that would become more prevalent over seasons 6 and 7.

Maybe since you give no fuck about either of them it was mediocre for you but it was the best appearance of Discord after his reformation where he doesn't just act like jackass all the time. Fluttershy also shown some development beyond being assertive.

To Where and Back again did the nice discord better, he is still a bit of a jackass, but within a reasonable zone where its interesting and not annoying. Discordant harmony just made his character really boring.

Season 7 also has some episodes that would qualify with Forever Filly being an obvious choice and Parental Glidance because of something a certain character mentions.

Canterlot Boutique has a lot going on. It introduces Sassy Saddles as an obvious bad guy similar to, for example, Svengallop, but this is partly a misdirection as halfway through it becomes clear that the real villain is society and SS is really just doing what Rarity hired her to do the best way she can. It's critical of people's impulse towards conformity without portraying the masses as irredeemable, which is something I find too rare. It also brings Rarity's desire for popularity and her passion for her work as art into more direct conflict than any other episode. Twilight's Kingdom is just there for the scene where Tirek persuades Discord with the argument that in making friends with the ponies he's given up his freedom and betrayed his true self. Of course, it's Tirek who ends up physically imprisoning Discord by the end. Boast Busters I find interesting to view through the Aristotelian concept of virtue as a mean. There are other episodes that sort of do this, but I like how this one shows the two opposite vices as mutually reinforcing. That is, Twilight's excessive humility is what allows Trixie to get away with being a braggart and seeing the reaction to Trixie's bragging makes Twilight even less likely to try and show her up. And PPOV is pretty stimulating because you're trying to piece together not only what really happened, but how each pony formed their own impression of what happened as you hear the different, extremely biased accounts.
