In Europe the copyright was due to expire at the beginning of this year anyways.
But in the US it was supposed to last tile 2030.
However a law professor and another production company sued Time Warner for claiming false copyright, saying it should have been public domain by now. So they settled because the royalties they expected to receive over the next 15 years wasn't going to be worth it.

Thanks for saying it. A lot of people try to downplay the "It's for children" part when expressing their love for S1 and the show, but I readily admit that being for kids is part of its charm. I liked when the morals were stated directly. I liked when ponies would stop and explain words or sayings, as if for a younger audience. I liked the storybook feeling.
