Lel. Because it was obviously written by corporate mandate and was disguised as a hamfisted attempt at furthering the story. It was a rapid and grand alteration of a character for extremely flimsy reasons. I don't think it's even properly explained why Twilight is uplifted to Alicorn status and Princesshood. It also doesn't help that the scenarios presented in the episode are kind of terrifying in their implications. The episode made it seem like ponies are completely enslaved to their cutiemarks. Either the mane 6 had selective amnesia regarding their lives before the swap (indicating memory is tied to the marks), or that they go along with everything because 'it's just how it's meant to be' (slavery). Nothing is properly explained.

It's a giant clusterfuck of an episode that clearly wasn't meant to fit into a 22 minute timeslot. The episode is also completely unrecognizable compared to the script that Larson wrote. He's straight up said he did write the episode we got.

But the CMC getting their marks did the exact opposite in pretty much every way except the CMC still calling themselves the CMC. The CMC trying to help people get their marks is pretty different from what their old episodes and episodes like On Your Mark really help to confirm that.

Their non shit season 6 episodes (IE not carts before the pony) were about them defying the norms set up in the first few seasons. On Your Mark questions why they even did the crusades in the first place and teaches them to pursue their own individual goals as well, fault in our cutie marks showed them that being good at something wasn't enough to make it your life's ambition. These all heavily defy the ideas established in their earlier episodes.

Remember showstoppers where they are trying to get talents based on what they were good at? Or really any season 1/2 episode that involved their crusades. The season 7 episodes are moving towards them becoming better teachers by having them trying to solve problems beyond just getting a cutie mark (the character in forever filly already had a mark and needed to learn how to interact with her dog, marks and recreation will be about the CMC trying to deal with Glimmers ideology). That is pretty different from their old episodes.

I see it as more of a deconstruction of their formula, as their solution is to move away from it.

Not entirely true, even ignoring how they act with their clients, the CMC are clearly becoming more liked by their town. In the early seasons, they were basically rejects to mostly everyone and now they seem much more revered.

Twilight used to be such an adorkable little sperglord when the show started. After season 2 she sort of just became boring and generic and her becoming an alicorn just sort of set that in stone.
To me it's sort of symbolic of how her "character development" ruined her character.
I seriously miss well-written Twilight. The closest to how she used to be we get anymore is SciTwi, and while I think she's cute, the fact that her best writing is it in a spinoff is honestly just really sad.[spoiler/]

It's not the fact that she got wings, It's the fact that she's moved on with her life. A lot of people were drawn to the nerdy, bookish twi in S1/S2, but she's become a lot more sociable and a lot more powerful since then.

Being much more powerful than her friends is just shit. Writers have to constantly nerf her for any physical challenge to overcome.

Tbh, I like glim glam less than twi, but i'm glad that at least they've got someone to take her place. I just wish that they had made glimy a bit more quirky in her personality, and not just "oh I did this evil thing once".

Twilight finished Starswirl's spell, got zapped by EoH, appeared next to Celestia in a hallway of monitors, got a song from Celestia about her destiny, turned into her cutie mark, came down from heavens and appeared with wings.

What do we actually know of all this? What was that place? Why was Celestia there? Why did Twilight go there? Why was there monitors recording everything since Twilight came to Ponyville? What did the EoH do exactly?

Beginning of S3, Luna knew what Celestia ment with "Twilight being ready", as at the end of S3 opener, she pulls out the unfinished spell script. Celestia knew what the unfinished spell would do when finished, so specifically that she was waiting for Twilight to appear where she appeared, congratulate her and tell her that she has proven herself to be "ready". Twilight did the thing and Celestia is still talking to her how she is now ready for the thing. Then they proceed through the hallway of monitors, while Celestia sings about monitoring Twilight's every step. This strange place is now clearly Celestia's domain, a place she could enter and leave as she pleases. So, why is Twilight there and why is that special? Why is Twilight an alicorn? As they come to the end of the song, Celestia does a thing, to which part of Twilight's magic comes off and wraps around her, while Celestia stops doing a thing. Twilight descends to Ponyville in a cocoon of her magic and now has wings. Isn't it clear that Celestia was behind everything, EVERYTHING, to do with Twilight gaining wings, including putting the wings on her.

So what was the special thing? The EoH and the spell? To get into Celestia's domain. And how does she get there? By blinking there, teleporting. Twilight's speciality, favored trick, is teleportation. It is what her G1 version was defined by, its what defines her current FiM version.

Or it was all hallucination, as most bronies explain it.

That isn't so different. The twilight I remember doesn't have any "real" flaws, only trivial ones like aspirations of perfection, being too humble or some shit like that. A character with non-flaws, unrealistically perfect for they are, detrimental to the story because of who they are. I don't care for superman or comics in general so I wouldn't know your example, but I do know that twilight to me is an un-enduring, boring character who I have no desire to see win. Her character has very little potential for the setting she was in, someone like Trixie or some other throwaway villain the show had would have been interesting, because they have room to grow from themselves, and with friendship. Twilight is just perfect little cunt. That at its most basic, is what I see as a mary sue. A perfect little cunt who offers no value to the story because of who they are.
