Btw, to extend an olive branch, I don't hate earth ponies; I love AJ and Pinkie. However, though I am shitposting, I did find it odd initially, almost six years ago, that unicorns were seemingly so OP, while earth ponies didn't seem to have much going for them as a breed. If I were to redesign the pony universe, I would make it so that the earth ponies had something tangible going for them, like vastly superior physical strength for example, to make the world seem a bit more balanced.

I see both sides, but I do have to admit, that when it comes to human, real life, no magic, farming, it really is mostly all mechanical work. Valuable, but tedious.
Tilling soil, planting seeds, harvesting crops. A lot of it is waiting around between stage two and three.

As an agricultural engineer, I can tell you that you have no idea how involved the agricultural industry is. There is so much involved in something as simple as irrigation that you would have to spend an incredible amount of time to learn. There's the environmental aspect involving infiltration and evaporation rate depending on soil and a multitude of other factors. There's the mechanical aspect of getting enough pressure to drive the water to where you need and at the right time. And that's just the mechanical and engineering side of it. The Canterlot Elite is the most diverse group, and should probably be considered the norm for Equestria. In the S2 Rarity episode they're about 50% pegasus, 25% earth and 25% unicorn. In later seasons they're a near-perfect 1:1:1 split between the races and even an equal gender representation.

The military is weird, because only a tiny fraction is Earth, one or two across the entire series, but I doubt that's very indicative since it was only recentöy that they bothered to make non-white non-grey models.

Cloudsdale is obviously 100% pegasus, and therefore not really of interest.

The interesting places to look are ones like Manehattan, from CMChronicled onwards it's been a primarily Earth city with an Earth majority and upper class, with earth and pegasus middle class and unicorn serving class.

I think the main issue is that a unicorn city with unicorn culture doesn't really exist. Canterlot is textbook diverse, Cloudsdale is Pegasus, and most other towns and cities are Earth.

And then on average it doesn't look like they have any kind of enchanced strength beyond normal physical abilities. They carry normal weights. Their tools have weight suited for animal their size. If they were stronger it simply would be really unomfortable for them.

And no matter if ponies as a whole have super strength, earth ponies aren't stronger than others by any big magnitude. AJ (not average farmer, she's athlete too) has similar strength as RD (she's mostly focused on speed, not strength). And even in competitions that AJ won, she won only by small margin.

Just because most unicorns don't train their magic at all, doesn't mean it's impossible. What's stopping let's say Lyra from learning how to create fire? Nothing. Just because you don't have talent in some field that doesn't mean you can't be good in it. Not master but better than average.

Most unicorns do train their magic, they have special classes for it and everything, there's even magical kindergarten and stuff. When Sweetie Belle trains basic magic Scootaloo is training mechanical skills (because she can't fly, otherwise she'd be in Junior Flight Camp or equivalent) and Apple Bloom is doing entry-level alchemy.

So two examples. And Maud is still nothing special by their Equestria standards. We saw many ponies doing many different things, and some of them were on par with breaking rocks.

Her talent and her lack of magical potential. She could probably create a magical spark and light a candle or something if she trains hard at a new spell, but that's hardly a fireball, she has nowhere near the potential required for a relatively high level unicorn spell like that. Even Twilight struggles to maintain her magical beam for longer than short bursts, and only Luna can use it continuously, and that's fairly comparable to what a "fireball" spell is in pop culture. FiM doesn't actually have fire-based unicorn spells, does it? That's the domain of dragons normally, or? I digress, and I see your point. Replace Fireball with Lightning Bolt and the argument remains.

When you train you don't grow more magical, you learn to use your existing talent magic better, you refine your talent. This is why Sunburst fails at being a mage despite him trying his hardest. He lacks talents and can therefore only excel at the theoretical parts (same as an earth pony or pegasus scholar could, in theory).

1. Fluttershy still had to come to AJ sometimes for herding ground of animals.

2. She still can't deal with dragons and can only shout one down in emergency situations. Even then that part is only 50/50 at best (See Secret My of Excess).

3. Whatever connection and love she has of the ground now, Fluttershy gave up on most of her Pegasus traits to purse that life. She was basically a Scootaloo in the flashback and is not much better now.
