So here's something I want to talk about: we can all agree that ponies developing guns is kind of ridiculous. At most, they're only practical for unicorns, as every other race is forced to stand still to operate them. So with that in mind, what kind of weapons would ponies develop in the long run? The obvious answer is mass produced magical items, but that doesn't seem practical either. I just don't see where you go from strapping lances to your sides. Stronger, longer, lances? Or would they simply develop firearms that, I dunno, fire when their user twitches their ears, which still have the problems of reloading or aiming or anything like that.

Blades that retract and shoot out based on the extension of the back legs, spiked helmets.
It's quite possible that guns would never be invented and instead they would move toward enchanted bullshit like tank's helicopter blades.

They're fully able to use rifles according to cartoon physics. While some ponies might not be able to fire and move at the same time, you're suppose to use fire and maneuver tactics in modern combat.
You also have to consider what the enemy are capable of. A battle rifle can easily hit a target 300 yards away and a moving target at 200 yards. If you have only melee weapons than that's a lot of ground you would have to cover. Now imagine if they waged war with the Griffons or Changelings. Now they have the ability to fly and two thirds will not have the ability to fight back.

To further explain how fire and maneuver would work, part of the squad or platoon will lay down a base of fire with riflemares and lmg gunners to suppress and fix the enemy. This will allow the assaulting element to move under cover by the supporting element. The supporting can bound up if necessary under cover by the assaulting element. When the assaulting element gets close enough they can push through and destroy the enemy.
The assaulting element will have to have close quarter capabilities. Assault troopers armed with smgs or shotguns given to unicorns and pegasi to fire on the move.Earth ponies will have to stop and engage any threats that pop up quickly before moving on or can use bayonets for a spear charge if close enough.

If you want further reasoning why you would develop guns, then look at the OP pic. That gun is supposed to be fired in a stationary position and was able to fight back calvary and melee charges.
