I'm surprised there isn't more of these since mlp and vaporwave mesh so well together in the sense they both rely on reusing and remixing something that came from the 80's for nostalgic purposes, pastel colors, and ironic love of products born through consumerism.

Both of these things are out of date memes and their respective fanbases died 2-4 years ago.

I'm sorry you can't grasp aesthetics. A lot of it is complete garbage made by total hacks or kids who don't even understand it's underlying concepts. I'm no art snob but this is one genre I can really appreciate when it does well

For me, I've been a pretty big fan of drone-type music and this does it well. I'm the kind of person who can listen to the same album and sometimes even the same song for hours when I find a certain sound I think it does well which plays into the repetitiveness of vaporwave. The repetitiveness can get grating as some songs drag things out a little too long, but there's a sweet spot that just works for me. On top of that, the typical overproduction with echoing and hazyness gives the feeling of a sweet, but sad dream or distant memory leaving it very melancholic in the same way you would get from a genre like shoegaze.

Then there are people who like a lot of the designs and the supposed multi-layered meanings of the genre itself, and while I can hear it play out in some songs, most don't evoke the thought in my head.

I won't try to defend against the assertion that the music is simple and uncreative, because it usually is just heavily repeated sampling with effects layered on, but it's still one of my favorite genres.

You cant really pin it down since its evolved and mutated so much it means different things to different people.
From what I understand it stems from plunderthonics, literally just taking existing music and putting it in a different context. Mixed with Hypnagogia, the state between sleep and wakefulness.

Basically mellowed out music that hopefully will put you in somewhat of a tranced out state, made out of existing music and samples to create a new experience. The prime one being nostalgia to the early 3d, early internet, 80s/90s era.
For some people it's just about the nostalgia, to some its just the style of music, to some its just raw emotion and to some it's a modern sense of romanticism rejecting the modern world, but to most people it's just a visual and maybe audio based meme though. Don't worry about it, just pick the stuff you like and find out why its meaningful to you, if at all.
