Well, Cyrillic A gives [a:] or [A], while Cyrillic E gives something like [ye] the Cyrillic И is the equivalent of Latin E.
Long story short while many letters look similar the alphabets are totally different.
"PECTOPAH APEHA" in Russian letters actually would be a RESTORAN ARENA for example, from the English perspective Russian alphabet is just messed up.

I get that: they stem from the Greek alphabet rather than Latin (although related, Greek is a smidge older and deviates from what we're used to): hence, in Cyrillic, the "P" is more comparable to the Greek Rho; the "П" comes from Pi, etc etc.
But using a "Э" ("Eh") to substitute an "Ah" sound...

It contradicts my currently-held conceptions of the pronunciations, as I've previously stated, but I'll accept that that's just how it is: Germans tend to pronounce A's in English words as "eh"'s, which has been a pain in the buggery for me, but it's somehow habitual for them.

While the other anon already explained he meant "uh", I want to add that У is pronounced "oo". So "Upplejack" wouldn't use У unless your pronounce "upplejack" with a german accent (so "ooplejack").

You know how "cat" and "cut" are relatively similar, depending on your accent? Well, the Russian "a" basically sounds somewhat like the vowel in "cut" (or perhaps somewhat in the middle).
