What has happened, as we have seen repeatedly throughout the show, is Equestria using "friendship" as a means of pacifying the other species. Direct annexation of other lands and subjugation of their peoples is incredibly resource intensive and the natives that remain will retain a fighting spirit and a strong desire for independence. So, as an alternative method, the ponies have taken to simply destroying any independent culture that the various species have as a means to assimilate and, in the process, utterly annihilate them. For when a griffon abandons their sales for a helping, yet condescending hoof, or when a dragon abandons their competitiveness and hierarchical order for an enforced equality in "friendship", they cease to be griffons and dragons; ponies in all but appearance.

Ponies don't need colonies, the world is already theirs.
