Hasbro still wanting to make the show appropriate for kids keeps the magic alive. Deeper and more mature themes enhance this, but go too far and you lose it all.

Only if the majority of the time it's as lighthearted as the show. When you have people try to make things constantly dark you get the DC movies, and nobody likes the DC movies
