Humans have a tendency to anthropomorphize things they like.

I mean that in the least meme and furfag related way possible. We do it to our pets too, talking to them like they can understand us among other things.

Sure, but pets are pets. I think that a vast majority of us do not want to be intimate with IRL horses. Yet, despite this, the ponies we see in the show are the exception. It's possible that intelligence is another factor in attraction, as we see human traits through their actions, making us relate to them more.

And it's not just ponies, I've had a dozen different crushes towards animated characters throughout my childhood, and even now I still do

Why? Because they're characters with a face, a voice, and a distinct personality
You don't need much more to deceive the human brain
They're real, because you can see and hear them, even if you can't ever touch them
The same way you could've fell in love with the 'queen of the school', even though you knew that she'd never even look your way


And then, we 'obsess' over them because they've been a part of our life for quite a while now, nearly seven years for some of us
That's a whole fucking lot
Also because we're lonely single males addicted to porn and they represent our idealistic mate(s)
