It's not gonna fail if we buy a ticket every day for a month.

Has there ever been an instance of fan works reviving a fandom? Just curious.

Remember how the first Equestria Girls movie was mediocre compared to Rainbow Rocks and Friendship Games? Maybe this will be like that. Maybe they're playing it safe with a generiic plot for now and boost the quality if they make a second movie.

They already experimented with those sequels though, so why not just do it straight away with the pony movie.

This, EqG was released when they were testing the waters and they saw exactly what they had to improve and applied it on the sequels. The pony movie is coming from a much more experienced team, therefore, no excuses for doing shit.

The closest probable analogy is what the Expanded Universe did for Star Wars in the 90s. I can't overstate how much of a fucking wasteland the late 80s going into the 90s were in terms of Star Wars content. There were some comics, but they were universally shitty, off-model, and had some contrived-as-fuck storylines.
So eventually Lucasfilm takes this shot in the dark, and hires actual fans of the original trilogy to write some works set after the trilogy's conclusion - existing writers, yes, but chosen for their love of the setting. Lo and behold, they produce actually good products and the fandom fucking explodes into popularity again. Games, books, comics, everything was getting cranked out.
Allegedly the sheer uptick in popularity was what even convinced Lucas to shoot for a prequel trilogy - though whether that's a good or bad thing may depend on your point of view.

I think the problem is they listened to all the Movie suits who wanted to make a movie for normies; Everything about this movie screams "FUCK THE FANS, THEY'LL BUY TICKETS ANYWAYS".
They sucked everything that fans are intrigued about for the franchise out so as to avoid confusing the people and kids walking in who've NEVER seen FIM before, and in doing so left us with uninspired shit that will piss off fans while leaving the normies, who don't care, shrugging their shoulders and not caring enough to show up.
They should have gone all in for fans instead.

>The Emoji Movie had a budget of $50 million, and is currently sitting at $127 million.
This is the world we live in, It'll make back its money and profit Anon, regardless if the movie is good or bad.

The emoji movie was brute forced by Sony studios like their lives were on the line. Lion's gate is doing shit to advertise it and have a fraction of the advertising power of sony even if they DID care.
there's a massive difference here.
