I think I'm starting to get caught up. I've spent some lurking around here and other sites. It's kind of a weird feeling though when I'm watching great episodes like Amending Fences or Maud Pie for the first time and it feels new and exciting to me but everyone else just treats it like old news. I've found a lot of good content and discussion in the modern fandom but there's also a lot more negativity and pessimism than there used to be. Seems like the fandom never fully recovered from the Twilicorn drama that was still going on when I left.

What hurts the most is that we'll never be that naively happy about being part of a larger community ever again. We'll never be excited for our first meetup - or any meetup - ever again. In fact, I don't think meetups are even a thing anymore. Finding a convention on the other side of the country, being excited for months and getting a group to go together with? Never again.

There's more hate and pessimism because the culture changed around us and we couldn't do a thing about it. We grew frustrated, angry, even devastated. Our friends fought, left the communities, and never came back. The conventions started becoming scams and places to vent our drama, so people simply stopped going. The hiatuses grew longer and more frequent, which made people stop watching.

Sure, if you're new you can find all that old stuff and get excited...but you'll be the only one. There's no community. There's no fandumb. There's just negativity and shitposting.

In a way, I'm glad that I got to be around for those golden years. As cringe as half the stuff we did back then was, at least we had fucking fun. At least we were smiling.

At least we were friends.

I think that /mlp/ has reached its cultural zenith in the oft repeated cycle of cultural history. The main stages of that cycle would include the cultural rise, cultural boom, cultural stagnation, and, if not another boom, cultural disintegration. /mlp/ has already gone through the rise and through the boom, and is currently somewhere within the stagnation phase. Content has slowed, numbers have declined, enthusiasm has dampened. /mlp/ has not yet reached the point of total decline, as some would like to believe, but it is in fact approaching that point, and it will as all cultures inevitably do. A culture not preserved can only be replaced, and whether or not that next progression is something better or something worse is up for the members to decide. All of us will have to answer when that day comes. When this culture finally begins its descent, and it all comes burning down to make way for the new, will /mlp/ continue on the legacy, or leave it to the ashes of time?

As I mentioned before, the current state of the culture is in the midst of a stagnation, but there is a possibility that the movie and post movie seasons can propel a sort of renaissance for the culture, at least temporarily, allowing rise of the culture to occur again. There is also the possibility that nothing will change, and we will continue on this path of stagnation until the show ends and the decline comes quickly. What happens next? Well who knows but time. We can only look to the past for reminders, but the ultimate fate of the culture lies in our hands.
