I was personally underwhelmed. By far the weakest parts were the villains. Grubber does nothing, Storm King is in it for all of two scenes and manages to be even more 1-Dimensional than Tirek in his predictable back-stabbing and power lust, and TEMPEST has to be the most disgusting, vindictive, self-serving deplorable excuse for a pony in the canon. She was void of any empathy what soever to the suffering of others, only switched sides after being left no other alternative, doesn't seem to even apologize for being the sole cause of everyone's misery to serve her own ends, and is entirely undeserving of her redemption.

The princesses being completely worthless from the outset nettled me something fierce to, combined with the fact that literally no pony other than the Mane 6 actually end up doing anything to save their home. This feels like a special we would have seen years ago but the show's evolved. Surpisingly the middle was the most enjoyable for me with the journey to Mt. Aris.

The Prequel book's backstory was still meh, but if that's the movie canon you can't make much out of it, I guess. She wasn't bullied, but she was inevitably left behind.
Other than that, throughout the book Tempest is pictured more as a shy, self-conscious pony. Her motivation is wanting to be normal again, telling Tirek about Equestria is her last desperate move after the pearl job fails. It's not much, but it makes her feel more like a real human bean than this book or the comics did.

The backstory, plotline and behavior of the characters is retarded. Tempest is stupider than Glimmer with her villain motivation. Mane5 are bland Twilight crowd that have one personality trait like in S1 opener. Spike and Gruber are joke mascots. Storm King is a love child between Tirek and Sombra being even shittier than both of them. Pirates, Capper and Sea ponies feels like they were added later on and had nothing to do with overall story.

This is pretty much confirming that we will never get a second movie. EQD bronies will not save it and normies will shit on it.

I forgive alot of flaws with the show cuz these pones are so damn cute and cheery. The world is really interesting. I don;t give a fuck about the princesses being useless or Tempest being forgiven for blindly following a villian for her horn. Episodes like 28 Pranks Later, where pinkie forgets to never prank flutters and Dash acts like a cunt are what bother me. But I choose cute pones over substance generally. I was never in it for the story. I was in it for the sexy pones and colorful settings. Good stories are a bonus.

If you want epic gritty drawn-out stories, go watch Game of Thrones or some edgy anime or something. I'll admit that an bigger final fight would be cool, and so would more emotional, cinematic scenes as it is a film, but the overall story has to be simple so that kids can follow it. It's the enjoyable voice acting, music, animation (although the 3D looks god-awful), dialogue and interactions that will make the film fun, as it has done for the show. We all knew this from the start. This and cute ponies are why we are here. If anything, a complex plot would over complicate things and take away from this.

Okay, so I'm going into this with the expectation that this is a colossally dumbed-down and excised version of the actual plot. I'm still holding on to the expectation of the actual movie to have some things we aren't seeing here - i.e., more development for the pirates and Capper, maybe some foreshadowing and talks between Twilight and Tempest, the Hippogriffs and pirates playing a great role in the finale - the sort of thing that gets cut because kids won't read all that.

That said.

This is the rankest pile of shit I've seen land on this franchise in a while, and that's saying something. A movie should not make you stand back and go "but wait, why?" repeatedly, yet this did exactly that:
> But wait, why can't the Princesses fight back? We've seen them summon violent storms, teleport, shoot magic beams that carve through rock and stone, and warp other ponies' minds at will.
> But wait, why doesn't Twilight know about the Hippogriffs? She's a scholar and a learned pony!
> But wait, why are the seaponies even important? Each of the M6 has made many allies over the years, why aren't they calling on them?

These are significant issues, massive logical gaps which have to be addressed. And all the filling out in the world won't remotely help paper them over; these are really plot-critical moments which can't really be changed without massively restructuring the movie's entire basis. This has the deus-ex-machina simplicity of early seasons without the strong secondary roles for characters other than Twilight or the M6, and the utter disregard for anything approaching lore or world continuity associated with later seasons but without the moments of good character writing they get.

The problem with the novel, while probably based on the movie, reads like a terse summary of the movie rather than a novel. Actions are cut short, only given the bare bones description. Locations are only given vague paragraphs with little detail about the place and characters are just introduced with the narrator already telling us about them. There also seems to be a lot and I mean a lot of the dialogue missing for a more streamlined plot. Basically the junior novel is an extended wikipedia summary with bits of movie dialogue sprinkled in.
