Dude, it's all about the Rotten Tomatoes score now. Sony and ilk like them are actually trying to implement review embargoes on their films now, so more people will see them before the score goes up. They tried pulling this shit with the Emoji Movie and the plan failed miserably.
MLP is a children's film, so it'll be critic proof on its first weekend. If it performs like other films of its kind, it'll make somewhere between $25 and $30 million. All it needs to do after is be a GOOD film, and numbers will improve significantly over the next weekend.

Because it's too early, Anon. Assuming Hasbro knows what it's doing, it'll ramp up promotion for the film starting around September. Hell, a bunch of children's books for the film (and the art book) just came out TODAY. Likely, they'll have the big name stars, like Emily Blunt and Liev Schreiber, appear on talk shows and have clips from the movie to keep the parents alert that the film's coming out. And then they have to promote HARD on social media, because that's where everyone is.

It makes no difference to me...I don't even watch the show, there's zero chance I'm going to watch the movie. I don't own any stock in Hasbro so it doesn't effect me either way.

The only way this thing is even going to be in the black is if they kept their production costs low. Personally, I don't know how much they've spent making this film...maybe they did keep their costs low.

But seriously, it's not going to post big box office numbers because there's no audience for it. The movie should have come out during the summer or been delayed until the christmas holidays when kids are out of school.
I'd be very surprised if it even cracks the top 5 on its opening weekend...and it's all downhill from there.

Parents might bring their kids to see it once on the weekend but to be a big success a kids movie needs repeat viewers. That's not gonna happen while the schools are in session.
And they spent a lot of money on "guest stars" who just aren't gonna draw audiences into a kids movie.

So yeah, this movie is gonna be a massive pic related.
