I have wondered this since I fist saw applejack's pig stall.

I mean, horses can be opportunistically carnivorous. I have seen them chop down a frog or snails ocasionally from the pasture.

So tiny horses getting a little protein boost from eggs is plausible, but do they crave meat aswell?

Usually horse residues are regarded as a more potent ferilizer. Swine residue only makes sense when it is cheeper or more abudantly aviable e.g. via mass production, which is not the case in equestria. Also they keep bovine slaves? for milk production.

Possible, but they could also jut compost it.

Not all of them are penned in from what we saw in S1. Also they might consider it unhygienic to use their own manure, same as we would.

Ponyville is an Earth Pony town, so it's not unreasonable that Earth Ponies would use pigs instead of paying a unicorn to do it.

You can say this about most jobs though. The thing with unicorns, at least in early canon, was that they had a handful, or less, of spells related to their special talent. You'd have to find an average unicorn with the appropriate talent, since most aren't Twilight or Starlight, and then pay them for it every time.

It's not very self sufficient for a family like the Apples or a town that wraps up winter without magic.

Smart thinking horses might have a 'thing' about not wanting to poop onto their own flowers, and food seeds. If this needs to be explained to you, sit down somewhere quiet and have a think.

Pigs may also be domesticated by farm horses because the alternative - wild hogs, hairy tusky invasive-species-y avatars of malice and ecological destruction - is bad.

I like this explanation. But every animal outside of places like the Everfree Forest, including the bears, are somewhere between feral and domesticated. The ponies control every aspect of nature, including the "wild"life. Still, wild pigs are pretty much boars even growing tusks within a generation. I could buy entire species becoming their known domestic variants, in fact, that's how it should probably be for every creature, but we obviously wouldn't know what a domestic bear would look like.

Here's my take on the topic: eggs were an arbitrary choice, based on their status as a common, instantly-recognisable breakfast food. There is literally no other reason, no deeper meaning to the scene other than to further the conflict and contrast between Rarity and Sweetie Belle. Post pepes and 'no fun allowed' reaction images at me all you like, but you're just proving my point: this style of thread isn't some worthy, intellectual exercise, it's just another excuse to argue at people online.

Bears are caniforms and can be domesticated. Not much profit in doing that though, since a regular dog will do the same guard job with less risks and less food required. Nowadays we even have pocket-sized seizure dogs for blondes, but i digress.

Ok, so this might be ham or not within the sandvich. But at least it implies that it could be ham, so the posibility of meat eating ponies is there.

Also a possible indicator: Apparently ponies' history resembles vaguely ancient human cultures or at least their mythology.
In greek mythology there is a story about flesh eating horses called Mares of Thrace/ Mares of Diomedes (Diomedes, king of Thrace, son of Ares and Cyrene who lived on the shores of the Black Sea.)
If this is their ancestry then meat eating seams even more plausible from a "historical" point of view.
