Rainbow's swelling went down super quick and all the bites didn't seem to have any other effect on them, so they might be little more than a nuisance. I can see them tying ponies up, though and that's honestly pretty grim if you think about it.

There's probably pest control that usually handles these things like we saw in Applebloom's dream about the Twittermites. As for why they exist, a lot of animals in their world are of a magical nature or a mix up of other animals. I'm willing to bet this might be stuff left over from when Discord was rocking about as the undisputed lord of Equestria.

On a side note, there's going to be at least a handful of porn of this.
